We did co2 racers with the little cannisters in middle school. I beat everyone else by a mile until the finals. DQd on early launch cause I was nervous.

I did that in my HS woodshop/engineering class my senior year. Someone in my class put a canister in a pool noodle, and it broke everyone's records.

Weight is generally uniform since everyone keeps their car as heavy as they can without going over max weight, even aerodynamics is pretty minor, the biggest factor i've found is wheel alignment and friction

It was cheating. The rules specifically said no lubricants. You had to use the block of wood they gave you, and you could only add the weight they gave you. They weighed the cars before the race and you couldn't be over the set total weight.

Maybe yanks just can't engineer a car to go downhill without hax?

I actually won my Pinewood derby. Got a cool little medal and went to "regionals". I remember losing early on there but it was cool because we got Pizza Hut.

These were the same exact rules that I had as well except it was pure bullshit because the kids who won only did so because their dads cheated and modified the racers to high heaven yet no one ever disqualified them which was bullshit.

the last race was always a group of those people who would get in fights about not being able to lube up their cars before the race and they would all whine and bitch.

I never understood why that is such a common cub scout activity. youre too young to use wood shop tools to actually shape the block of wood and no way in hell is anyone carving that block.

We made co2 cars in tech ed class in middle school. I made 3 of them because I kept taking mine home and finishing them in my garage rather than just working on them in class.

Best results was when the cars would explode after hitting the stop block at the end of the track.

We did some amazing stuff in that class. Shame my high school had NOTHING equivalent.

They made us do this when we were 7.

If they made us do this when we were like 11/12 it would have been perfect.

I did most of the shaping with a rough rasp with the block in a vice, cause it was just pine. But I'd had plenty of practice because me and my dad used to make sailboats pretty much the same way.

i was not in scouts but ended up doing a couple pinewood derby's at church through a scouts knockoff called royal rangers.
The cheating you all talk about was just as rampant. So i never did win a race but i had 2 cars win best in show. One was a shark car and the other i made look like a phone.

My dad is an engineer, so I was totally that kid. Won first place 3 out of 4 times. The 4th year my mom insisted I go for style instead, so I made it look like the USS Constitution. Pic related.

First year, I had no clue what I was doing and zero help from anyone. Pretty sure my car broke in its last race and I didn't win any races. Second year, I actually did a little research, read Boy's Life magazines, asked around, and got help from some Eagle scouts, and wound up getting first place. Third and final year, I just made the Simpson car, and I carved little Simpsons and put them into the car by cutting the top, then gluing it back on when they were all in, but I wasn't allowed to race it officially because I used two kits to make it. But when the races were over, they let me race for fun with some other kids, and it wasn't the worst car but it was pretty bad. Pretty sure I still have my cars in a keepsakes box with the rest of my scouts stuff. Thanks for reminding me of this.

My dad and I made a pickup truck where the bed was full of lead he dripped in there with a blowtorch and that was the weighting system. He had to drill it out 4 times on the day of the race before it was legal weight, lol. It came in second because it was probably still slightly too heavy and it ran like a motherfucker.

Day of the race, it's my time to shine. I see the scouts who had aged out of the derby pick my beautiful speed machine up from the table, carry it to the track, and fucking drop it. They fucking dropped it. They pick it up, lazily shove the wheel back in and start the race.

Wheel flies off again immediately and my car skids helplessly down the ramp. Last place. All because the butterfinger bastards dropped my baby. Thanks for reminding of this, OP.
