A few weeks back I made this William Birkin Statue. its made from Super Sculpey and Im thinking about selling it.
Hoe do you like it?
Think somebody would actually buy it?

It's impressive in that you clearly have talent but it still seems amaturish. It's your paint more than the sculpt that takes the look down a few pegs. Work on improving your paint skills and you could easily start letting stuff like this go on Instagram for $100-200. In it's current form I'd try for $65 and see if anyone bites.

that face highlights the issue, the sculpt and aim of the paintjob is impressive but not perfect

someone would buy it, if I were you, put it on ebay and charge for material cost and then add another 25% and that's instant sale

No, that's the advice from a basement dwelling hermit.

Sculpting talent doesn't come with business sense, licensing and legal savviness, or experience in dealing with the hells of cashflow, manufacturing, import, taxation, salaries and logistics.

Even 4 Horsemen, who have been sculpting toys since the 90s, are fucking up their Mythic Legions.

Use these as portfolio, get a job. See how making profit works. If you're lucky you might be able to head your own toy ideas in about a decade.

the paint on William Birkin is not too bad, i think it is ok but can improve at the feet, how ever the clown seems a bit thick with paint. But sculpt wise you work is amazing.

Oof I once bid on this super well-done custom Ganondorf figure (the whole outfit, face were sculpted from scratch and had great details like plastic rhinestones and gold paint) which could have easily been sold for at least $150 and lo and behold I was the only bidder and won the auction at the minimum price ($60 shipped). I KNEW that the seller (who was the custom figure maker) fully thought that he would sell it for $100+ but he was a total bro, shipping super fast with good packing and such. He even said that he worked on it throughout 3 weeks.

If you guys think so then by all means shell out for it. Fact is I see countless artists selling their stuff for around this price. Yes, a handful of more successful ones can command high prices, but they have the right combination of skill crossed with luck and impressive social media presence and promotion. It's their fame mixed with the one off rarity that drives the price, and someone needs incredible work in the first place to gain that fame 99% of the time. I see better work getting sold for less all the time.

That time and effort means shit if the demand doesn't exist. Schools may be weak now and give an A+ solely for effort but the real world doesn't magically reward you for breathing air and taking up space. You can sculpt swans out of feces, spending 20+ hours on each one, but odds are no one would buy that. Think of the market more than your effort.

This looks like the kind of quality you would accept a professional company for putting out, but at the same time wouldn’t overly praise an amateur for doing.

I guess what I’m trying to say is it’s good enough for a company like NECA or whatever to put out and charge the more affordable price they are able to bring a business, but it’s not quite good enough for me to be comfortable paying the kind of rare an amateur artist who made it by hand should charge.. if that makes any sense.

Your texture work is very good, the skin looks fantastic. I think the area you most need work on is your human anatomy. Everywhere that looks more human (Birkin's face, left hand, legs), it looks sorta doughy and weak. Clothing sculpt could be better too, learn to work those edges and really differentiate it from the skin surface. Paint is thick but people have already gone over this. You should be working with thinned (consistency of milk) paint and building up thin layers slowly. You should also pay attention to finishes--the giant eyeball would benefit greatly from a super heavy glosscoat to make it shine.

All in all, good job. Improve your human anatomy, clothing sculpts, and paintwork and I could see you selling this kind of thing for easily like $3-500 apiece.

This happened a lot in the late 90s and early 2000s, McFarlane did this in the middle of their run at times and became famous for it. It's not a good way to do things generally.

so if figures today are sculpted with joints in mind, are the sculpts worked on with joints already sticking out? or do they just make each piece individually, and try to eyeball leaving enough clearance for a joint hoping itll all look proportional when the joints are all in?

That's not necessarily true. Look at the early Revoltech Predator sculpt for example. I also strongly suspect that Yamaguchi sculpted at least part of Spidey this way because of the strange interlocking way the knee area works.

It definitely seems to differ from company to company, and even sculptor to sculptor within those companies.

Pretty great stuff, except for the paint on the irises of giant eyeballs.

If you could flatten them out and repaint it, then add a clear lens over them, that would be amazing.
