With Transformers, I have a few of the Prime Vehicons, who are just fantastic figures, but I also use a few of the '07 Deluxe Desert Brawl figures as drones. I got a few as freebies back when Hasbro gave away free toys, and they're perfect generic 'cons for Autobots to blast. I also have a some Energon Terrorcons because those figures make for a great horde. Hopefully we get a Titan Scorponok sometime in the future to lead my savage little army. I would have loved to have gotten a hand full of TR Quakes, but he was actually a popular figure as I never saw him go for any kind of discounted price. He's so generic you could buy a few and use different TR heads to have a team of unique-yet-generic background bots.
As for other lines, I have about three Revol Skeletons to use as generic monsters, but I'm not as fond of them as I used to be. They're too wobbly and weirdly scaled to be fun. Though when grouped with my 5" tall October Toys Skeleton Warrior Skeletons, they do make for a nice little undead horde. But my favorite Skeletons are the Mythic Legion ones, both the wave 1 and wave 2 generic Skeletons are great in their own ways and are just a lot of fun to have surrounding some heroes.
Sticking with the 6" scale, Marvel Legends has a ton of great figures to use as background grunts. Besides the straight up troop builder packs for both Hydra and Aim, I the Onslaught wave Scourge as generic mercenaries, throwing a Create-a-Superstar Roman Reigns in as an enforcer grunt. I've also been tempted to grab a small squad of SWB Storm/First Order Troopers, but that plan fell far down the priority list and will probably never happen.
My favorite scale to troop build though is the 1:18th stuff and my favorite Troop Builder figures are always from Cobra. So many awesome yet generic soldiers in their ranks, and the modern era Joes just revolutionized the scale.
