I agree it can be very frustrating if the rear print sticks out underneath your headgear or wig of choice. I do like how it introduced more varied expressions in minifigures in back when the STUDIOS theme introduced them.

Ideal would be just including more single-printed headpieces, but that would add up quickly in cost i guess.

With how Lego's popularity feels like it's starting to wane, I think we might see more of rebuild-friendly sets in the near future, hopefully as Lego tries to create more original themes (I know tons of normie friends who're also tired of the 90% licensed themes taking up Lego's catalog, so it's not just us)

I could see things start to take a turn in the coming years. There's definitely a growing feeling of discontent with how Lego has focused on IPs, exclusives, and huge models to draw in that huge pop culture crowd that is all of the rage these days. Like all things, this will pass. I hope Lego decides to go back to basics when that happens and tries to engineer more in-house themes, both basic like City and more ambitious like Ninjago, but tries to focus on the fun rather than full replication. Work within the limits of the bricks, don't create a bunch of specialized bricks to make the build look more "real."

Nonsense! There are a few useful double-sided head pieces, like the old Quirinus Quirrell one with Voldemort on the rear side, but by and large most of them just have a lame extra expression and ruins any opportunity to use the head without a hair piece or helmet

The minifig for Mercy in the Overwatch theme, if you look at the skin on the face print, you can tell it's all fucked up. A few of Lego's flesh-toned prints have been fucked up lately

I like using blue to indicate play features/things that move.

Any suggestions/things I should improve?
I like the curve at the front of the box but I don't like the gaps left by round 1x1 bricks, but I needed those to make room for the hinges.

It was an EXTREMELY hard decision to make, and I wish I could give everybody a prize because I loved them all; even the joke greenscreen and bluescreen entries. Let's take a moment to review and appreciate the mocs and the great anons who posted them!

The Chucky set looks great. Love the motion-control rig.

WW2 guy never posted a completed entry but I really liked his director.

Giant battle makes me laugh every time I look at it. I love the goblin army and how absurd the director looks. I like to imagine him yelling "Action!" Also love the catering table.

Nesquik set looks great. Really nails the "fake TV kitchen" look.

Doghousemobile is just plain adorable and very well thought-out.

Johnny's Adventure Rig looks great. Really nice detailing.

Pirates of the Blue Baseplate has some nice and clear "this is a fake ship on a greenscreen" design

But, there are lots more minifigs to win and there's only one entry that can claim the Wizard of Oz pals...

Woah, thank you so much! I genuinely had a lot of fun with this contest, but I didn't expect to win at all, if I'm being honest. All the same I'm really honored, especially with so many of the other great builds! I don't think there was one that I didn't like.

Is it just me or is Pharaoh's Quest super underrated? Most of the sets look cool and have great parts and colors. I have the scarab attack, flying mummy attack (with the biplane) and those are both really nice. I like that vague trilogy of Atlantis, Pharaoh's Quest and Monster Fighters where it's "adventure team goes around exploring and fighting monsters".

Idk, I just never found it particularly interesting. It felt less like a theme about "adventure", but more like a giant monster battle with an Egyptian coat of paint. Maybe I'm just being cynical, idk. Just not a fan of every set being effectively a monster for our heroes to fight; though I've never been a fan of any Lego theme that mainly focuses on combat just in general.

Anyway, today I bring LG yet another question regarding your MOCs.
This time we're going to deal with build stability and structural integrity.
When you build a MOC - how important would you consider these factors to be? Are they at the core of what you're building (funny right?) or are they secondary to obtaining a certain aesthetic outcome or structural mechanism.

As far as I'm concerned stability and integrity are really important, and most of my MOCs have a built in dual function.
Their primary function is a Lego MOC while the secondary function is throwing brick/blunt object.
For me, when MOCing, the philosophy is that it should be something that a child (small) could play with and enjoy himself without having to worry about it too much. I mean sure, small bits that are added on can be pulled, but the main build will hold together.
I've come to this idea because at its core I see Lego as a toy more than anything (even though I don't doubt that by now many see it more as a means of artistic expression).

I feel it is a challenge to design something that is both structurally sound and good looking, and that going for either one without the other is somewhat lazy.
Yes some techniques only work with very fragile structures, and some fragile MOCs look amazing - but I really don't feel that's how the system was supposed to work.

I 100% agree.
While i guess stability is 'secondary' to aesthetic and play, it is still VERY important to me.
My stuff isn't up to speed with lego sets stability for sure, but for the style, scale and seating hieght/ number of setaers availability I make them as structurally sound as possible.
You should be able to handle/grasp and lift them without thinking and nothing should come loose or push apart. Even that tiny little plate that isn't supported in the big build gets a pass in my book.

The roofrack and a pillars/rooflines aren't super sturdy so you cant carry the thing grabbing it, but that was sort of a necessity for the skeletal look. I did make it sturdy enough so that if you put pressure down on it it hooks itself more together like a bridge.
To make up for it i pre-designed it in stud.io so overkill-ey that the 'ring' of the door panels, hood and rear seat so to speak were like absurdly sturdy. I could clutch it in my fist as ahard as i could without it collapsing despite it entirely hollow. I was very proud of that.
As a rule of thumb, the smaller and more compact you go the harder it is to do so, but i always try to do it anyway. In that regard i think my more regular cars are more impressive.

I really enjoy these questions, definitely keep going.
For me it's aesthetics over stability, but only to a certain degree. My builds still have to hold together decently well, but most aren't suited for "real" play.
I think it's because I enjoy seeing how far I can stretch the boundaries of the system and how many details I can put in while still having a stable enough build. That's also why I mostly build very small, the bigger you build the easier it is to have a stable "core" with a detailed "shell". When you build small everything needs to both look good and be stable.
That said it also definitely depends on what I'm building. Vignettes and to a lesser degree vehicles can be handled pretty roughly, but when I build mechs or anything with thin parts in general they are often quite fragile. I think that's where a third part comes into the equation for me: Articulation/ play features. I really enjoy putting little features into my models or having them function similar to the real versions (for example I want all my transformers with wheels to actually be able to roll). In cases where I have to decide between more stability or more functions I will definitely go for the latter. I'm not quite sure if I put more emphasis on features or aesthetics, I guess they are pretty much equally important to me

This really depends on the MOC. Sometimes I don't even consider it, and it doesn't become a problem, because the nature of what I'm building doesn't need me to care about it (because it's too small/already sturdy), and some others need you to sacrifice sturdiness for mobility, or looks as it is the case with mechs. For spaceships I always try to prioritize sturdiness so I can swoosh them around, and a large interior to shove a buncha minifigs inside. When shape/proportions or size are what's limiting you, then you have to sacrifice sturdiness sometimes. Be it for functionality or aesthetics, unless it makes the build prone to coming apart easily I don't mind sacrificing sturdiness, which, as I said before, normally isn't an issue on my builds, which I also very often find are more sturdy than official stuff, although I'm inclined to believe using illegal techniques is what adds sturdiness to my builds, since many things Lego considers heretic I probably do and in quantity.

I try to strike a balance.
The stability should reach a point where I can pick up and pose the MOC without anything falling off but not to the point that official LEGO sets do. Also, I try to put in articulation where I'm able to without sacrificing too much aesthetically and/or structurally.
I'm personally not a big fan of half-connected pieces or pieces that are just lying on top of one another. I'm not denying the cool-looking effect it has on some MOCs I've seen, but It's not something I would make use of.

Well, today's news reminded me how suitable Lupin III would be for the way Lego handles themes. It has all sort of vehicles and locations, and even an excuse to make one buy all sets (have Lupin in multiple ones but with different colour jackets).

Mid-scale Ideon. Most of the Buff Clan mech comes in one of those funny shaped boxed the old Star Wars minis came in, and have a few red pieces to build some of the least iconic but still fan favourite designs. Bigger set is the Solo Ship and one of the Buff Clan carriers as to recreate the scene over Moonland. Ideon has its own set but also is included with the Solo Ship. Also a fully transformable UCS with a bunch of figs.

or trans-clear afaik, but this is using stud.io so you can apply it, but it is my biggest disappointment. I could find no solution beyond this tho. The original half-cylinder design I had was disgusting. Any ideas how to re-build this with actual parts would be greatly appreciated.

It's pretty much the only Lego theme I'm still buying. Shame there's only a single decently sized animal 3-in-1 per year.

I thought the lack of articulation would make this set weak, but it's really cool and, ironically, the squid is the weakest build.

Hopefully the orphan boy I bought it for for Easter will have fun with it. Turns out he really wanted that one, but I didn't find out until today.

You need to look at the "Known Colors" column. The "On Wanted List" column just shows what BL users WANT, not what's actually been produced. Think of the On Wanted List as a placeholder reminder so if Lego starts making parts in that color and the new color shows up on BL, they will get a notification.

Guys, I need suggestions on how to make underwater scenes look cool and alive. Tips?

I'm struggling making them. Submersible vehicles I'm okay with. I bought the big city one used and I love it. But I started building a base and surrounding it with stuff, and I'm just not enjoying it. Look at this picture. I didn't make it, but I feel the same frustration looking at this as looking at my own base creation. I feel the same way with other similar underwater creations I've been looking at too.

It wasn't until I saw this video that I think I started figuring it out https://youtu.be/fZSF3-wXDes?t=21 I say think because I'm still not sure, and hope I'm wrong. My problem with underwater creations then is because all of the pieces not having that blue/green filter or shade to give that appearance of being underwater. How am I suppose to fix this? Only use pieces that are only blue/green? I already have a huge box of childhood and used lego that can't fufill that need then. There has to be a solution that doesn't involve spending a whole bunch of money. I can probably make above ground structures look decent enough but I really want to make underwater stuff. Thanks for reading my rant.

Bricklink makes trans-colored pieces hard to find. When searching stores or whatever, I try to searching for "trans-blue" or whatever color and I get no hits. Even though the store does have some trans-blue pieces.

Specifically around 3:44, they use technic bars which ALMOST touch the studs on the plates. I don't know if the technic bars are supporting the entire build, but if they are, isn't that putting too much stress on them?

If I remember right it was actually from about 2009 and marketed to companies for workshops/ trainings in creative problem solving and teamwork. There's been a few sets like this, some also targeted at kids if I think

Troop carriers are fun, and the gunship does that pretty well. Looks like it has all the figs and MSRP on that variant was $120 so it's not too terrible a deal. OG 2002 version still the best.

I found this sphinx set out of box and intact save for a couple easily replaceable pieces. It was at a charity toy sale. It wasn't fully assembled and I had to look up the manual, but I saw the print pieces and knew I had to get it.

Sphinx is cool but I liked older one more. It's not just nosalgia, I liked it for unique pieces. Base plate had a lot of use. I made Africakorps/desert war zone style trenches diorama once.. Meanwhile this one has pretty much nothing special, it's just lot of sandy pieces and some generic slopes.

Also Adventurers had 1 small seaplane in military camouflage colors. It could be easily re-configurated to look like a war plane. It waa like a single-seater version of pic-related, but with floaters instead. Small set, rather cheap, you could get few to make a fleet.

I was browsing BL and the seller mentioned how during shipping to him the box had been somewhat partially damaged with a piece or two coming out.

I played with Lego quite seriously up until high school, and then it became one of those things I was embarrassed about, and it wasn't as easy to swoosh and pewpew and make my soldiers talk.
Kept my collection close at hand at all times, though. My mom tried to get me to give them to my nephew and that's when I realized how much it meant to me.
I got some architecture sets and a few star wars models I wanted as a kid, and now I'm way back into it. It's so much better than when I was a kid now that I can buy my own stuff.
I've also got an account full of insurance money and am disabled, so I have nothing else to do, and nothing else to spend money on.
tldr; lego is cool, fuck leddit

So the 'joint' you see at the knee area is just surface detailing to suggest the joint.

I think the King's Mech is the best design Lego's ever done for a mech. The knees are definitely a notable feature, but so are its general durability, coherent color scheme and its commitment to the "suit of armor" motif. Some of the build techniques are pretty clever for an official model as well.

Not trying to sound like a weeb but it truly shows how much better the Japanese are at designing mechs.
The King's Mech was made by Junya Suzuki based on Mark Stafford's sketches for the Black Knight Mech which just looks clunky and more primitive in comparison, made even worse by the fact that it was supposed to come out first but then the release schedule was changed.
Stafford even flat out appologised to people who found his model disappointing.

He did a lot for Space Police 3 and Alien Conquest (which is why the big AC set had a Vic Viper with the NNENN sticker). I think he also worked on Exo-Force and had his hand in almost every other big bang theme

I always liked the idea of a hover horse. I use to play Zelda II: Adventure of Link and in the third dungeon where you got the raft you also fought an Iron Knuckles on a floating horse. I always liked to think the raft was just a talisman that let you summon the floating horse to get over the water instead.

Here's the build - it has 3 main components. One cabin/control module, a long-range flight module and one surface exploration module. The cabin module can interact with either of the other two to form a unique new vehicle.

It's just the illegal building techniques classification is rather dumb on some parts because it was made to force excessive care onto the designers. Ninjago City and the new Destiny's Bounty seem too easy, so I'm going with the first Dojo. That was back when I actually still played with sets and didn't just use them for parts and it was the first big Ninjago set I got. Plus Nuckal was awesome.
Another one that's just special to me is the first Cole spinner I got on christmas when I didn't even know Ninjago was in stores yet (I think my parents got it like one or two days before christmas)

It is for an anniversary line and screams "yeah, we're scraping the bottom of the barrel here" to me but on the other hand this is like the eight time that Snowspeeder design was used with only one or two pieces more here and there.

That said, it's surprising that there are original Star Wars sets at all given how there are (or were) so many vehicles and locations in that universe that having to come up with additional ones seems kinda pointless.
Hell, we only got like seven different podracers in those twenty years,including two which barely count and one whose missing its pilot, and having one or two new ones each wave instead of rehash number 15432 or the next Freemaker disaster could be pretty neat.

it's just personal autism but i still would've liked to see a remake of one of the 07 ones, or at least the rebel trooper one because for some reason lego hates putting them in sets and han would make more sense being packed with rebel troopers rather than stormtroopers, but i guess none of the 20th figures make sense with what set they're in

After madmax steampunk dragons I can't go back to stupid ninja motorcycles, half-tracks, and half-track motorcycles. The villains are the best part and they don't even get a dragon or mech this time.

From my experience at least, Benny's Space Squad did pretty well. About as good as a standard small SW set, I'd even say, but maybe I'm just being generous, I don't fucking know.
Either way, we KNOW they made a special Disco Benny figure, we saw it on display with that giant cake alongside Disco Metalbeard. They wouldn't toss the unique prints and molds away just like that, would they? Benny even had double-molded legs...

Creator doesn't really seem to be a theme anymore so much as a place they place any set that contains too many pieces to be part of it's "home" theme. Seeing a whole lot of what would otherwise be City sets showing up in Creator, while City is going balls deep in planes and buggies.

It has always kind of been that way. Creator Vehicles tend to be bigger scale or not compatible with minifigs, 99% of the buildings could be dropped straight into a City.

The next Creator wave looks great, a nice medium sized building and a massive cargo heli

Lego Shop Build-a-Minifig has exclusive parts now. Some have cropped up on BL like tan guitars and brown Mad-Eye Moody hair but I believe these are brand new

It has to do with their color palette which has recently exploded in size. Certain dyes within the abs plastic react and affect it's strength.

It's always been a problem around mold lines, but certain parts are definitely more susceptible to it now. The good thing about Lego is it's lifetime warranty so long as the part is in production. Order replacements on their site.

You're overstating how bad it was, but there were serious flaws preventing it from being a great movie, including the pacing being all out of whack, Benny and Brickbeard might was well not existing and taking screentime that could have been used to develop the new characters (even though 99% the only reason he's there at all is to try and revive Classic Space), Unikitty being strangely underutilized in spite of the fact that she's a girl's set fig when a whole plot point could have been made about that...

But whatever anyone says, the credits are awesome, and a major step up over the first's. I want to see this credits machine IRL.

Two reasons:
First is that apparently parents complained that there weren't any instructions for them included.
Second and I guess the more severe one is that a lot of the alt-builds back then were honestly quite fragile and horrendous looking and Lego, believe it or not, has certain self-set standards for their models so each one of those alternative builds requires the same amount of designing and testing.
Lego has doubled its amount of sets in the last decade - now imagine each one of those getting three or four alt-builds that all have to go through the same process.
They probably came to the conclusion that it simply isn't worth their time and money outside of Creator and Technic, especially when you can just go to sites like Rebrickable these days and get dozens of alt-builds.
