They started as a somewhat cheap alternative to SOCs but in the end basically became almost as expensive as them and undesirable for the initial target audience.
Giant Robo was like 12000-13000Yen on release and the SRC of Big O would've without a doubt been around the same.
You know what else had that price? The Big O SOC that was released only two/three years earlier.
Then there's the rather shoddy quality on a lot of them, especially with the joints.
From my personal experience, God Raideen is a joke with some absolutely baffling engineering (the way the hands and weapons are attached onto the forearms - Jesus Christ), Dendoh's waist is floppy as fuck, Sol Aquarion's intricate joints result in the green vector limbs being way too delicate and fragile (same problem as God Raideen's forearms) to the point that they didn't even try to attempt the same with Aquarion Evol, Dai-Guard's shoulder joints become saggy after a while and can't properly support its large weaponry, etc.
And finally, tons of them simply shelfwarmed hard like God Sigma, Evol, God Raideen and the gazillion Mazinger repaints.
