Credit score systems are created by private firms so that banks can judge the risk of borrowing individuals defaulting on loans. It is only used by the government to judge ones financial trustworthiness as a borrower or cosignatory of federal and state loans. Unlike the totalitarian Chinese social credit system, credit scores are an entirely financial measurement, based upon ones past financial history.
The Chinese social credit system is a measurement of submission to the Communist Party of China. The less you fit their idea of an ideal citizen, the more you are penalized. Certain religious beliefs that the state dislikes and political activism will result in a low social credit score. Unlike credit score, this score does not only effect ones ability to get loans. Those with low credit scores for having the wrong beliefs, financial misfortunes or purchasing habits the state deems wrong can be and are banned from using public transportation, getting airplane tickets, acquiring high speed internet, staying in certain hotels, having certain jobs or owning pet dogs. Even one's kids are held hostage by the Chinese government in order to enforce their ideas, as entry to the best schools in china are denied to those with low credit score parents.
