They really should have given him gloves, that CGI model looks horrifying as-is but it would have toned down how freakish the thing is. But with the Sonic fandom as a whole being full of insane pedophiles and troublemakers, they don't deserve a good film. I mean that, this game's audience could provide "interview" fodder for several new seasons of Hansen VS Predator.

What is it with all the live action vomits companies have been lately producing of properties that have no business being a live action film? Disney was originally the main culprit but now Nintendo is catching up on this meme with Detective Pikachu, and the Sonic feature film was originally supposed to be full CG before they switched to partial CG. Is this really, seriously what we're doing now? Do people really want these obnoxious human actors and crappy 3D models portraying classic characters from popular culture or is it a forced trend perpetrated by corporate whores?

This is such a different design from what actually ended up in the movie. It's still far from good but I'd much rather take this one. Here his eyes kind of have that classic merged design and they're not as human-like as in the film, his belly is also properly colored beige whereas the movie version is white for some reason, and the iconic side mouth is on all of the illustrations. If they just gave this design proper gloves and maybe bigger shoes it would be almost serviceable.

Expect the whole film industry to call a person "mentally handicapped" if they complain about any changes movies make from the source from now on. Kinda makes sense to me. Part of why lots of Disney movies were in 2D animation was because there was shit you just couldn't do in live-action that wouldn't look hokey with the effects of those times. Full CGI has become the norm for animation now, but revisiting older 2D films as CGI+live action allows the films to do what they couldn't do decades ago. Don't get me wrong, I hate the idea of reboots as a whole, but these live+CGI adaptions of formerly 2D flicks is at the least visually appealing to me. Just look at the CGI from the first Jumanji movie and compare that to what can be done these days.

Still, 'realistic' Sonic is nightmarish-looking.

If you check director Jeff Fowler's twitter, he acknowledges the criticism and says changes "are gonna happen." What this amounts to is anyone's guess, as the movie is set to come out in five months and anyone who has worked in film or animation knows that redesigning the character and redoing all the CGI footage in that timeframe is a goddamn MONUMENTAL task. Like, animators working themselves to death round the clock monumental.

I think Pikachu looks a little creepy too, but at least the fix is easy--they got MOST of it right, like the body shape. I just don't know why they did the eyes the way they did, that's the biggest issue for me. Shrink the eyes and reposition them, take out that eerie orange sclera, and maybe deepen the red on his cheek spots for good measure. Now that's a Pikachu I'd cuddle.

I really thought that would be covered under textures. When colored, they're usually brown. It's true that they aren't usually depicted with distinct whites, iris, pupils. I guess they did this to make him more expressive. Due to the size of them, and especially how much the irises cover, I don't think they look eerily human or anything.

I mostly meant that the overall look of the character is still very much there.

The fix is optimal for a normal Pikachu but the detective one would look weird in motion with a model like this. He talks and moves like a fully developed character rather than an animal, they wanted to give him more expressive eyes to further enhance this even though it's not accurate.

So I noticed this thing, despite the small eyes Sonic's brow ridge is quite large, in fact if you trace it they're as big as Sonic's eyes usually look. Do you think Sonic's model in the movie already has accurate eyes and they edited them to look smaller for the trailer, so they could get brownie points for "fixing" it?

The design on the right would work if you made a more realistic CGI movie, but if you stuck that in a live action movie it would be like the Woody Woodpecker movie, an obvious cartoon floating around in the real world not convincing anyone that he's actually part of it. The ideal design is somewhere in between those two.
