They are indeed just statues but do you guys really play with your toys ? I mean i do some "regular" toys too but i dont actually play with them, they're just displayed like my designer toys

I wish more designer vinyl toys could make the jump to mainstream like Funco Pops did. Those aren't toys anymore, as much as a medium for collecting different characters, sort of like Lego Minifigs, but less expensive.

I think once 3D printing reaches a certain price threshold, there will be a sort of renaissance for designer pieces, especially if they can print in multiple colors. I think a lot more people would collect designer toys/figurines if they weren't priced for short-run manufacturing.

If Shapeways became a viable alternative to Chinese manufacturing, you could probably hire someone in the States to do your painting and sell stuff at reasonable prices online instead of resorting to blindbagging bullshit.

eh, I think as much as toys from mattel are carefully manufactured, 'art' toys and statues are just as such - just for a different crowd. Not genuinely unique, just less marketable to non-artistic or people who like plain stuff. It's almost like saying hot topic is better than target.

Case by case basis.
Was never into kid robot dunny type stuff, but small batch Japanese soft vinyl from independent artists I’m into, a lot of that is due to the fact that the manufacturing/painting process is really interesting to me, giving them a real handmade kind of feel as opposed to injection molding mass production.

Some are really pretentious (many examples already shown in this thread). Others are really cool because they fill a void for a niche market that other companies won't fill. I have been buying a lot of indie toys lately because they are usually better quality and take on characters or ideas you won't see elsewhere. However I know when I'm being bamboozled. Most my purchases are around $15 or $20. If it's more than $20 then I have to really think about it. I see some go for $300 and I just have to think who has the income or need for a glitter, tie-die repaint of a gorilla toy? I'll never understand the weird color choices. Maybe just a way to get rid of excess paint I guess?

Most, if not all, designer toys I've seen are painfully pretentious. There's always talk of them being "art" but never any actual discussion of what they represent/mean/invoke. They're style over substance for literal hipsters to glom on to in an attempt to feel superior.
