For Bionicle it was Onua at age 7, I think. First constration set of any kind was one of the original Slizers, probably ski. First Lego set was before I can remember.

I got both Dekar and Thulox at the same time as my first (I was late to the party, I know). Must have been around 7 years old or so, maybe 6.
I love Dekar still, I think he's cool. I would've gotten into Bionicle in 2006 but I still thought it was weird, ntm I was a huge contrarian as a kid. If you told me something was popular, then I'd immediately hate it and not want to know anything else about it. I was a stubborn motherfucker.

Fun little build, but I can't get past the lack of eyes. I didn't mind the Tohunga having their own head piece but after the Metrutoran finally receiving lightpiping, it seemed like a major step back afterwards.

They had balls making Pohatu brown again in G2, I'll give them that. He wasn't even featured in the catalog with the other Uniters. I went to the Lego store on release date and they didn't have Uniter Pohatu at all. Luckily they had him at TRU on the way home though.

I think yellow, at least Keetorange, is believable as a Stone color as it feels like it's related to tan. Hewkii's gunmetal and Carapar's odd mix are good stone colors as well. Orange was absolutely insane, though. I'm glad G2 Pohatu managed to find a happy medium with burnt orange.

If they wore regular masks, I'd probably place them above the Mata. They look imposing and heroic, which are qualities many Toa before and after them lack. Most of their color schemes are great. And the weapons are just too fun.
And, if you ignore the lore and just think of them on their own, the masks/faces are really cool in that unapologetically edgy/ugly/cool vibe that defined the late 90s and early 00s. 2006 was weird as fuck and alienated a lot of people, but it's probably the year with the most unique and recognizable art direction.

They're the perfect blend of the mirimax style and the toy aesthetic. Short of having fingers on their hands or more proper head pieces, they have the best "alive" look second to only the Metru. The original three years had a whole other style to them, heavily technic and gappywith loads of pistons. But the Inika were definitely one of the best of the more 'lifelike' looking figures. Saying they're gangly seems disingenuous when the Mata were the bobbleheads with rail thin limbs.

Imo the Inika are just too bare, they have very little to balance out their spindliness and flatness. The Mata had big chunky torsos and feet, large masks and some had bigass hands to give them a feeling of "heft" compared to their gangly limbs. Nuva were pretty bulky overall and even the Metru had relatively short arms, rounded chests and big, bulky shoulder pads that made them feel compact, and the inner gear system added to the sense that there was more going on with them despite their skinny legs and ridiculous, paper thin midsections.
Whereas most of the "weight" of the Inika seems to come from their giant swords with built-in batteries and blasters outfitted with unsightly top-loader chimneys. Their bodies feel insubstantial, their torsos are practically invisible from the side because even their shoulder armor is wider, and their heads are basically just flat masks on sticks.

If I remember correctly, Axonn and Brutaka were Summer releases in the USA (Inika wave) and Winter/Spring releases (Piraka wave) in Europe. Umbra was fucking weird in that he was part of the Inika wave but some countries got him 1-2 months before the rest of the Inika wave.

In fact, given that the natural state of a Matoran has them with arms longer than their legs, see pic related, the Inika's long arms should be like that.

The proportional issues with the Inika are mainly their their torsos are too short and their shoulders are too wide. And even that can mostly be averted by making the torso longer a la Ackar.

Lots of species didn't need to exist. If MU beings don't reproduce biologically, what's the point of having an island full of clones for every single new design somewhere in the lore? It makes it easy to picture side characters who don't get sets because you can just say "oh he's the same species as X", but that's about it.

Some would perhaps argue that keeping most toy characters unique individuals instead of members of species would make the story's world feel smaller. I would argue that expanding nearly every OP character into a species makes the world feel retarded and too messy for its own good, especially since almost never do those unseen species factor into the story.
Come to think of it, Bionicle is a pretty significant example of a story which has a massive expanded universe that is almost meaningless to the overall main narrative. There's dozens of incredibly powerful characters running around dozens of islands who could completely change the story and tilt the odds in favor of one faction or another if they felt like it, but since they can't impact the main plots, they may as well not exist. And yet, Greg felt this underutilized EU wasn't enough, he also had to introduce alternate dimensions

I would've liked it more if building up Icarax actually mattered in the long run. Offing one of the most powerful Order agents right before the finale, as the war between them and the Brotherhood kicked into high gear, and doing it so casually (Right after facerolling the Nuva and taking an island-breaking tsunami to the face to boot) made Icarax seem like a massive threat, but then Ignika devolved him without much effort and Gorast killed him with about as much.

This was always annoying, no wonder so many Systemfags think Bonkle is nothing but specialized pieces. I know Lego had a budget, so sometimes big one-purpose elements were unavoidable, but I think the Visorak would be so much better if they made one single generic shell piece, and the details like spikes and the Rhotuka launchpad were separate add-ons. Sort of like how CCBS later did it, but with actual Technic connection points. That way each part would have a lot of versatility.

The little triangular corner on a Rhotuka ripcord is there so that it fits into the slot behind a Hordika's head and the handle is shaped the way it is to keep the spinner in place.

The forked design on the back of a Tohunga's head is there for gripping onto a bamboo disk and storing it on their back.

The Visorak biggest merit was finally combining Metru color palette with the Mata bright color palette, paving the way for a new generation of color schemes. Other than that, they didnt bring or leave much. It didn't help that the shells and the mandibles were nearly identical variations of the same design.
The Hordika had a few good parts (head, feet weapons), but they were pretty subpar as sets. Still, I don't think either line deserves the hate they get. I mean they aren't Brickheadz.

The fact that Umbra was the only one using wheels for transportation in the entire MU is all kinds of hilarious. You have this huge world with advanced technology, many independently developing cultures and species, and a history of 100K years, and then the only example of this one basic-ass idea is some guy rollerblading around in an underground cave. Generally a lot of people seem to assume that the Mangai all had metallic armour and masks, justifying the silver Volitak.

My approach has always been a bit roundabout.

We know that Toa Hagah masks are often recarved to resemble the masks of other Toa, without the power changing. Norik's Pehkui looks like a Kiril because it's been changed to resemble a Kiril (Though not Dume's Kiril because Greg is dumb). Ergo, it's possible that Iruni's Kualsi isn't what a normal Kualsi looks like.

So, I just work off the idea that Iruni's mask is recarved to resemble an old variant of the Volitak, and Nidhiki wore said variant, and his fame as a member of the Mangai resulted in the mask becoming associated heavily with him. After his betrayal, it stayed associated with him, and the Volitak variant felt out of favour, with the more familiar form from >>7537781 becoming the standard version.

It's overcomplicated but it arrives at the desired result: Nidhiki wearing the mask that was designed for him, with the power it was supposed to have, while not causing issues with Iruni and Nuparu's own masks.

The designers probably just designed them based on the theme rather than the character. I don't mind them being a bit different, considering that there's an in-world justification for it.

We're seen concept art labeled with the names of the Nuva, so I'm pretty sure they were always meant to be the Nuva.

I haven't either, but I'm confident you, like I and many other kids who bought Bionicle back in the day, were one of those fans who dutifully memorized every character and every mask name.

Another possible explanation is that name memorization is subjective. That is, some people have an easier time memorizing certain names and have trouble with others and viceversa. I tried recalling the Vahki and Visorak names the other day and I had serious trouble with some of them (*), and when I read the "Triglax" name in >>7539010 I went "Wait who the fuck is that?".
Yet I had no problem memorizing the Piraka names, despite them hiding no clue whatsoever to their theme/element/color and them being the last truly "Bionicle sounding" names (**).

* yes, I had to look them up
** before we had to deal with anglo-latin babble like "Axonn", "Mantax", "Mutran" and the like

That was unfortunate, but that deep down it was the result of villain sets being bound to the "Six sets, nearly identical to eachother, each one for each breed" formula. For one, the naming system was so fucked by then that, I assume, they thought that maybe trying something a bit different would've spiced things up.
The root problem, though, is that the story never really needed 6 breeds/types/representatives of every single villain group, especially when the element theming started getting dropped. And so the character roster got more, more and more bloated, with half if not more characters not really mattering much. Greg, unsurpringly, admitted this gave him a lot of annoyances.

I wonder how the sets would've been if the switch from clone sets to more individualized builds had happened back in 2004 instead of 2006/2007. You could've had no more than 2-3 Vahki types/Visorak breeds, not unlike what the movies did. The remaining slots could've been used for other characters that likely would've showed up either way, like elite Vahki, Kahgarak, Zivon or other evil and/or mutated Rahi. It's kind of what 2009 tried to do.

I was more confused by Matau and Matatu myself. I agree with >>7539251 about this, some of the Turaga/Metru masks had such meager roles that it's easy to misremember their names.
As for other odd naming choices, changing Tohunga to Matoran when you already had one named Matoro always seemed sketchy. And lets not forget Kollorak the Keelerak from the 3rd movie, which everyone thought was a crass mispronunciation.

I recall people talking about it like it was common knowledge back in the pre-cancellation BZP days, but can't find a source. Says '08 would have continued the Inika/Mahri arc before the Nuva returned the following year, but he (back then she was a he) also thought the '08 Toa toys were always designed to be the Nuva because storyline plans changed before the set design process began.
But there was also a German documentary that went into detail on the 2008 set lineup, and it showed some of the Toa in different colors, such as a blue Tahu, which could mean they didn't have particular characters in mind when designing the individual figures. It also showed focus groups influencing set design, and I doubt the kids in the groups even knew who or what the Toa Nuva were. Note the part where I said mask, not the characters. Out of their two year storyline prominence, they spent almost a year and a half not even using said masks, which made it easier to misremember some of their names, especially if they sounded almost the same as other names. As opposed to the Mata/Nuva, whose masks were prominently showcased and named for three years, making them easier to remember.

Further examples of extraneous backstory fluff that look nice on the website and in books, but couldn't impact the plot because otherwise the main character would have been killed under a day. At least there was a neat scene where a Visorak mimicked speech to lure a Toa into a trap, but I struggle to remember other instances where they showcased specific Visorak powers. They were mostly just a generic horde composed of throwaway critters.

Then just... don't fucking put a piston in it, and it should flex just fine. But, no. You're right, it makes perfect sense. That's why we see so many swords with pistons in them in reality. Because they couldn't flex otherwise.

There's some likely downsides to infection, like making the wearers think less clearly or requiring the Makuta to expend a tiny bit of conscious effort to control them. If any of those apply, they'd kind of negate the point of getting a Toa team as guards instead of Rahi, Rahkshi, or whatever else the Brotherhood could pull out.
