They precisely did that because they felt previous years' had too many powers and kids had trouble memorizing them. Sure, some characters overdid it, but I always felt that no powers at all felt dull and took away from the magical feel. Surely they could've found an happy medium between the two approaches.

Felt like a nice change of pace to me. Showed that power comes in many forms. In a world full of OP beings, the Barraki were dangerous because of their strategic minds, armies and because they worked together to achieve their ambition. It was basically an evil, bastardized version of Unity, until one of them chose to betray the rest at least.

It's the one I'm going with. Canonically, he doesn't have silver armor. I like the idea that Iruini's Kualsi was shaped like a Volitak. Then when Nidhiki betrayed Metru Nui, his association with the mask tarnished its image, so they changed the Volitak's shape and that's why Nuparu Mahri's is different.

I think Greg might have said that Nidhiki wore a Volitak just like Nuparu's before. I have the faintest memory of that. But he also wrote that Nidhiki has emerald ass emerald armor over and over, and the Volitak doesn't come in green, so fuck him. Greg never had any regard for MOC builders when he chose color schemes for his characters.

I know this one is technically non-canon because of the silver, but if I think the gold, silver and gun metal secondary colour motif works for the Mangai.

Anyone have any ideas how to match the flat silver like this Nidhiki has on his "Volitak" and shoulder armour, or any other recommendations for painting pieces and matching offical colours?

I have some scuffed and used flat gold pieces that I replaced. Wondering if I should paint them pearly gold.

The square sockets are a bit out of place. I'm planning to keep mine fairly kosher bar the paint. I was thinking of using a Chirox blade as the scythe blade, or a Keerakh staff.

I like simply using the light staff because it parallels his mutated claws. I'm also a bit autistic about utilizing pearl grey on certain characters. In my head, because Lhikan's swords are flat silver, Nidhiki's scythe should be too. So while I think a Chirox blade or Bitil sword could look cool, I wouldn't use them. The seraded edge on a Keerakh staff doesn't make sense to me for a sweeping tool like a scythe.

Small correction, Iron's secondary color isn't bright orange Esther burnt orange (Hewkii brown). That's arguably even worse given how scarce that color was in constraction before 2015. And don't forget sand green for Artakha, purple for Tridax and teal for Lariska and Jungle/The Green. Artakha is still nearly impossible to build to this day.

He never used actual Lego colors in his descriptions either. Instead of sand green and teal they were "grey green" and "blue green".

I personally think the fan solution of making Lariska blue AND green is actually better than her being teal.

True about that. Such ambiguous wording confused a lot of people as well, who honestly thought Artakha was meant to be green and grey. Not that a full sand green Artakha would be feasible. I think the best approach is building him with a color scheme similar to Zaktan's, minus the gold.

I suppose I'll do the same with Lariska if I ever decide to build her. I'm surprised he didn't make his main waifu Tuyet metallic blue (which is still more MOCable than fucking sand green btw) or something equally obscure.

Although I agree the Visorak/Piraka had too many abilities each, the Barraki were supposed to have been the most feared warlords in history. If ANYone was going to have a shitton of broken abilities it should have been them. Didn't help that the builds were generally more gangly and less physically imposing this time too

I remember being so fucking enthralled by that description. The model doesn't look anything like Makuta (and this was early '04, before we knew he was in the movie) and Dume hadn't had much story presence. It seemed so cool and mysterious, like during the final battle between the Toa Metru and whoever this third party would suddenly appear to either set everything right or destroy the city.

Thanks. Originally I pulled apart Defilak, Matau, and Iruini temporarily just to see what he would look like. But then I liked the simplicity of him enough and the parts to build him were cheap enough that I went ahead and pieced him together seperately.

From the final chapter of Into the Darkness:

Mata Nui was gonna kick the bucket anyway unless somebody used the Ignika thanks to the virus,if I am not mistaken the thing is that if Makuta won in Metru-Nui he would have used the Vahi to speed up everything and the events of 2005 and the whole Mata-Nui storyline wouldn't have happened.

Yeah, when MN crash landed, the plug that sealed the top of Karda Nui flew out of his chest and became Voya Nui. It's one of those "this is a cool concept but how the hell does it work" type of scenarios that characterized the franchise. It looked cool on Faber's concept art, devoid of much context, but once they tried to explain the exact details and logistics of how it went down, it became naff.

Looking back at MNOG, the Bohrok animations, and MoL, Takua could very well be considered the main character of the Mata Nui storyline, so I'm not surprised he got these MC-like twists about his past and identity eventually. The Helryx/Takanuva/Toa Mata example does actually make sense if you look at it in the right weird way. While they're all more or less the same age, Helryx is the only one who was actually activate as a Toa for the whole time. Takanuva transformed very recently, which could be viewed as a sort of rejuvenation since it basically gave him a new body, and Matoran generally don't seem to accumulate much "age" even if they go about their jobs for thousands of years. In the Mata's case, they simply spent most of their lives asleep.

It would make more sense if Metru Nui accepted students from all kinds of islands because it had the best resources to train professions like carvers, mask makers, miners and such. The best ones would stay in the city and attain high ranks, while some could try their luck in other lands. Metru Nui used to be connected via sea routes to other places after all until Makuta ordered the borders closed.
Or here's another idea, new Matoran could be created right there in Metru Nui, to be properly trained and periodically shipped off to other lands, which would necessitate the creation and tuition of new "batches" every now and then.
But I too think giving almost all Matoran almost infinite lifespans was a dumb idea from a storytelling perspective, and even from the perspective of how they had written the workings of the world around them.

Everything inside the Great Spirit robot is technically composed of some form of Protodermis (with the exception, I think, of the air, which I guess is just regular air). I'm pretty sure the metal that makes up Matoran and other biomechanical beings is generic "solid Protodermis."

I find it funny how during MoL Makuta was building a sympathetic villain-angle ("protecting" Mata Nui), while these Great Beings were being set up to be the true big bads in the background, all to culminate in Makuta being revealed to be the biggest 4D Chess master in the universe. It makes me wonder what would've happened if Makuta didn't turn into a generic evil world-conqueror at the same time though; what if they still tried to paint him in a sympathetic light during that time, with him being a genius sonnuvabich but still doing it because he wanted what he saw as best for everyone; keeping the GSR away from the hands of the Great Spirits, whatever the means?

I just feel maybe that would make the whole Bara Magna saga much more interesting. Imagine Mata Nui believing Makuta to be an evil traitorous backstabber, only to culminate in the final battle where Makuta revealed his true motivations and Mata Nui felt like a naive arse (which was part of his character arc during Bara Magna, ie learning how NOT to be a naive motherfucker). That would've been interesting as hell.

You wouldn't even have to reach far to give Makuta a just cause. Just establish that the GBs were planning to shut down the GSR and all its inhabitants once Spherus Magna was restored, and suddenly Makuta taking over and ignoring the mission doubles as an attempt to save all life in the known universe. GBs themselves being the next villains would also be perfectly natural this way.

There's some dubious Greg Lore that added extra details onto the whole "Makuta taking over the MU" thing.

Essentially, Teridax was always meant to be a Great Spirit, in particular he was the AI for the second robot that was never completed. When the GBs ran out of time to build it before the Shattering, they packed him into the first robot and reworked their plan so that the two AI would travel together and once they arrived on Bara Magna, one of them would take over the second robot. Also for some reason, Mata Nui was supposed to make the switch while Makuta piloted the MU, which doesn't make a lot of sense and is probably just Greg trying to pull the destiny thing too much.

That went tits-up, the second robot was never built at all, and Mata Nui had to use the prototype instead or something.

Mayhaps Mutran learned the truth about the GBs from Tren Krom, as well as Teridax's destiny to pilot the GSR, he told Teridax everything, maybe even inspiring him to make a secret visit to Tren Krom himself, thus giving a greater to motive to Makuta's grand design than simple egotism.

And when this results in a war that leaves the vast majority of the Makuta species dead? Well, I'm sure the GBs didn't want the Makuta running around when their weapons of choice are shapeshifting robots. The Marendar would be significantly less effective at wiping out the MU population if there were an abundance of Makuta waiting to take over its body and give the Matoran ample time to just dismantle it.

The Makuta's deaths as a result of The Plan, and Teridax's death at Mata Nui's hand, are exactly what the GBs want to render the Matoran less able to protect themselves against the Marendar.

The Piraka arrival are what I'd assume was something for him to have a little more excitement in his life. He seems a bit of a sociopath (which judging by the decisions made, the GBs may have all been that way).
I think the mad god hypothesis is a strong argument though. They were insane and were the root cause of basically every bad thing to happen. If they aren't mad gods, then they're stupid ones. You can argue they're brilliant engineers, but have little to no ability at doing anything else, and even their engineering can be shoddy at times.

Anything else is subjective, I suppose. For one the color scheme is wrong and that certainly annoys me. Second, I'm not a fan of the giant goofy smile on what has essentially become the (nearly-universally accepted as) canon form of the Olisi. I'm reckon something more eldritch (a la Barraki) and less edgy (a la Skakdi) would have looked more menacing and better suited to the character.

Well my headcanon is that Karzahni looks similar to Artakha, because despite (or rather because of it) hating his brother he subconscously wishes he was like him. So he wears armor that emulates Artakha's look, but since he's so fucking bad as an artist he looks like a distorted, cheap knockoff. Basically a shit cosplayer with no skills.

Both Karzahni and Artakha were such interesting and potential-ripe concepts to flesh out the world, it's a shame there was no arc dedicated to them despite how long they've been hinted at. Two titans, six Artakha-enhanced Toa, six deformed monstrosities serving Karzahni, you already have most of a year's worth of sets.
Of course I'm not sure how they could have fit into the ongoing story. From the perspective of the overarching Mask of Life narrative, it technically made sense to skim over Karzahni in what was essentially a side plot. But it's still a pity these huge figures of mythology were underutilized like this.

As I recall, Greg made Artakha up on the spot specifically for that random obscure browser game. Dunno when Karzahni was first mentioned, but Greg claimed he was his OC like Artakha. Then he kept referencing them in later books and serials, but the wider Story Team had no set plans for them.
As said, it's a shame, because these are two of Greg's ideas I fully support. They had the makings of major players, but they got so little to do. Karzahni would have made a good villain for a year without Makuta stealing the spotlight.

Deadpool was all the rage back in the day, and Vezon's depiction in the serials was influenced by him. Now Rick and Morty is the big thing. The GB function in a similar manner to Rick. They are super scientists who make crazy advanced stuff but also fail spectacularly. Interesting take. My interpretation of Karzahni is that he actually is, or was, really good at fixing Matoran, but it's precisely his desire to be "original" and creative like his brother that causes him to fuck up and make Matoran gremlins.

You can infer from the waterfall made of dust (assuming he's responsible for his island's bizarre landscape), or the fact that his own mask looks like it was stitched together from several others, that he lacks any kind of creative spark and just messes with existing things (like Matoran) and mixes and matches unlike concepts in lieu of actual artistic vision, and he's tricked himself into thinking these monstrosities are what he actually wanted to create to begin with.

Also, the thought of Rick and Morty (which I don't dislike) mixing with Bionicle makes me physically ill.

While one of it's legs was attached with one end to the Gorgon, it was attached to the Gorgon because that's also the direction it was flying…so whatever…I can understand how this could be seen as a gender-bending example. In The Mindless Ones (part one), the crew of the Mind Candy travels to a "Bionicle Island" filled with Monstromonids to capture and bring back to their mother Earth, but the group turns all of them into monsters and it turns into the worst nightmare of their life because their bodies and minds are still attached to them (like some sort of alien version of a human's), and the people who made them up have all died (which is one of the many reasons they can't talk back), and even later, a mysterious creature appears and tries to destroy the Mind Candy (with very few exceptions). The Mind Candy is saved somehow by an unexpected ally from Earth (aka someone who can speak with their mind as if they were spoken to like a human), and so they join hands with the mysterious fellow who also happens to possess a super-human ability on Earth, and their minds get returned (and their heads are filled with Super-Ectobranchoid-Molecules, and they are actually Super-Ectobranchoids at present). However, when Mind Candy-Molecules get into the Head...

My impression is that Turaga are just taller Matoran that can use noble masks and conjure elements to a limited degree. The "old man" thing is just artistic license from Miramax.

Movie Dume does make an appearance in the comics, but they were just using whatever references they had availiable in '08.

But yeah, Turaga are taller Matoran with low-level powers, these things are ageless robots, there's no reason for them to get old and decrepit like that.

The Matoran = Kids, Toa = Adults, Turaga = Pensioners was entirely a Miramax creation. A lot of Matoran are older than the Toa, and will never become Toa. Additionally you get cases like the Metru, which with Miramax logic are kids for thousands of years, adults for a month or so, and then old men for yet more thousands of years afterwards. It's a dumb concept.

Didn't Greg confirm long ago that the set form of characters override the movie form? Ultimate Dume Teridax might be the only exception, and even that is debatable since UD appears in the comics. So you can ignore all the old man traits Miramax gave the Turaga if you aren't into them.

pretty much, but the canon appearance of characters is a muddy area, no one source is 100% correct. the scale of characters in the sets aren't canon; all Toa are in-story the same size, and we all know how much of a manlet Axonn is compared to his story self. "heartlights" also became a canon thing after the movies, so we are meant to assume that Matoran/Toa/Turaga have them.

It's messy. I remember that at first, Greg was adamant that the movie forms are how they "really" look. But then the 3rd film gave the Rahaga headlights and rotor packs and had the Hordika with only one hand each, so at that point Greg began saying that the movie forms aren't necessarily the most canon either. They have fleshy bits and heartlights, so in that sense they're closer to canon that the sets, but apart from those there's a lot of artistic licence thrown around.
For instance canonically, Makuta had Krekka and Nidhiki's parts clearly visible in his armor in the books. But his movie design obviously doesn't. The movies also had tons of lazy shortcuts like giving multiple Vahki types the same staff design (which didn't even match either Vahki type that showed up) or only showing Vakama & co. as Metru-style Matoran.

They only appeared in those forms in a flashback anyway, and at the time they were Rahaga permanently. That didn't change for three or so years afterwards, and arguably it would've been better for them to stay Rahaga narrative-wise.

A story set in the past with Dume and Nidhiki fighting Roodaka, or Dume and Nidhiki appearing in Toa form in Vakama's dream in Time Trap, would've had about the same effect as the Hagah's origin.

Toa Dume and Toa Nidhiki would've been no more marketable than the Rahaga were, if anything someone who wasn't looking at the lore might be confused as to why two of the weird lizardpeople had the same names as the two shiny Toa.

If anything, I wager the origin forms of two of last year's major players would've been more marketable than the Toa forms of two of the small sets, one of whom did basically nothing.

Toas are essentially superheroes. They are capable of things that a Matoran could never in his life do, but it's their duty to use that power for the benefit of their people and protect them.
Turagas are superheroes, who gave up their power for the greater good. They use their experience and wisdom to guide the Toa and the Matoran, or in the case of the Turaga of Mata Nui, they just exploit the fact that they are the only ones, who never had their memory reset.

Narrative-wise, I think it would have made way more sense to not have them at all, and give Norik's role to Dume, whom the Metru promised to go back for yet didn't. The real Dume barely did anything, but this would have been his opportunity to shine and give guidance to the Toa in a city he knew inside-out. He may even have been aware of Keetongu, but kept him hidden from the public before the Toa needed to find him. And it would have given more justification for the two Hagah being him and Nidhiki as we learn about their backstory. Besides, Nidhiki's backstory was first told in the 2005 Encyclopedia anyway, so both of them would have been relevant.
But of course the set designers threw together a bunch of spare parts around a shooting gimmick to make Rahaga, and they had to be featured in the story, while Dume was so last year. There's so much shit in the 2005 arc that could have been way better with just a couple changes.

Dume and Nidhiki were both depicted as villains. Dume did fuckall but get kidnapped and impersonated in '04, and Nidhiki was an irredeemable sack of shit until he died. It's also very unlikely that these two would have fought side-by-side as Toa, and even if they did, they wouldn't have been a team. Dume was a Toa long, long before Lhikan. Nidhiki was on Lhikan's team.

To contrast, the Rahaga were painted as heroes from the beginning. They were performing heroic deeds for the Rahi of Metru Nui despite their mutations. It was set up from the start that they were once a team of Toa, and even in their current state they were doing their best to be heroes. So here you have Toa from the current year, who were irrefutably still heroes, who undeniably fought side-by-side, and also unlike a Turaga had the potential for their mutations to be reversed.

It was infinitely more fruitful to release them as Norik and Iruini because the play pattern offered by those characters suffered less limitation.

Yes. The Rahaga worked together as a team to wrangle up dangerous Rahi that escaped after The Cataclysm. Each of the Rahaga mentored their respective Toa in controlling their Hordika nature. A lot of the Rahaga's traits and lessons were responsible for the way the Metru acted as Turaga.

Man, I just really dislike a lot of the 2005 story all the way from its basics to the execution. It had a lot of neat stuff, and I didn't even mind Vakama's betrayal, but if there was one arc I'd completely change, this would be it.

Nah, Rahaga are cool. Set-wise, they're among the best Rhotuka launching platforms ("among" only because I never owned a Visorak and can't judge them). Story-wise, their biggest problem was that most of them did nothing, but the serials eventually filled that hole a bit. They also get bonus points because their debut scene in WoS (in all their non-canon helicoptery glory) had one of my favorite little soundtracks from the movies.

Could the Rahaga fly in canon, or was just movie-only?
It's funny how liberal was Miramax with the Rhoutaka designs. Toa Hordika get trays that shoot beams out of them, while the Rahagas flat-out turn into helicopters.

I think the novelization also mentions them flying at one point, but could be misremembering. The scene where they rescue the Toa plays out differently, though. In the books and comics, the Rahaga just parkour all over the and swing on spider webs instead of flying.
The only legit flight capability Rhotuka-launching people have is shooting a spinner in the air and grabbing onto it while it flies, which looks retarded in the movie. But the Rahaga don't have copter packs. That was a movie-only invention to make their scenes easier to animate without slowing down the film's pace.

No. In the novelization of Web of Shadows, someone the Rahaga are able to catch the Hordika mid-air as they fall, land, and then carry them to safety. Presumably on foot? The scene is from the perspective of a dazed Vakama and is very vague, but it doesn't once mention that there's flight involved.

I was more annoyed that the movie gave Roodaka and Sidorak Rhotuka backs too. Literally that's the reason Sidorak's right hand is oversized, cause he has a built-in launcher in his palm. But the movie completely ignored that.

The reason is that scene in episode 1, where Kamina does his iconic pose, and the peering light makes his glasses appear orange.

I was more surprised by how none of the '05 Titans shoot a single Rhotaka.
Sidorak shoots lasers from his blade, while Roodaka shoots shadow bolts from her staff. To me as a kid it seemed ridiculous, because if they have specific projectile weapons, why are they shooting beams out of their melee ones?

In general, it's interesting that the Inika were the only wave of Toa after 2003 that didn't come with an additional Toa outside the team.

Vezon was a play on that though. Marketing wise, we were sort of expected to believe that the Piraka were the new Toa, just like they tricked the Voya Nui Matoran nto believing. They hyped Vezon as a "SEVENTH PIRAKA!" in the same way they teased Takanuva in early '03.
