4 arms. Confused me for the longest time as a kid until I built him, but he's got the two main arms we can see (which are strangely curled in so his hands are technically folded against his elbows), then he has the smaller two stubby ones on his waist, with one carrying the Rhotuka.

He technically has four. The catcher claws attach to the elbows of long ass Slendy arms which fold up. His Rhotuka spinner is mounted on one of two shorter appendages that come from his waist, but I wouldn't really consider those arms. First of all they end in open ball joints (which is retarded, because there are enough parts left over to actually give them hands) but also Voporak is never described as having four arms in the story - only two. So whatever the fuck they are is really just up to interpretation. I like to pose them upward on his back sorta like those tube thingies that Xenomorphs have.

The build uses up literally every single Bohrok eye as it is. BUT, it only makes use of four black hand connectors, when there are six in Sidorak. There is literally no reason they couldn't have distributed the Bohrok eyes differently to give him another hand there. I can't think of an explanation why, but it seems to be intentional.

Ehhh. I don't think so, personally. Technically, Voporak is great, he's got a lot of cool building ideas and his leg design is spectacular. But overall, I think TSO just is a lot more cohesive. I'd prefer having him built if I had to choose.

I wanted to give him an extra pair of arms, too, but I couldn't think of a way that looks good and doesn't get in the way of his swiveling. I'd also like to give him individually moving fingers, but that's tough on something so small.

Why is everyone so complainy about the pixie dust? Hardly the most asspullish "power-up" in the Bio story. If anything I have more problem with the fact, that the OoMN didn't bother to give Takanuva some flying equipment. Did they expect him to do everything on foot in Karda Nui?

Its mouth should be more like Movie Takanuva but refited in the 08 mask instead of the "breather-like" mouth of the Turaga and the Toa of Water imo.
Also it's less "shiny" and more grainy than https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kVbhBYkldtU for example, which is pretty much my only general complaint about his Miramax style models. Dunno if it is the texturing, the rendering or what.
And even then it's not so bad, specially considering the great work and attention to detail such as putting gears inside of the armor like in the old sets.

Come to think of it, the infected matoran had such interesting potential. Even after the klakk cured them, they retained their mutations. They could had split off and formed a peaceful tribe of shadow matoran (with potential non-hostile shadow toa). Or the story team could had introduced new characters, using the retaining of the mutations to explain why they are so strong and physically different from the other small guys.

Vakama had brain-eating Visorak poison driving him nuts, and Ahkmou betrayed the others in 04 because he was terrified of Nidhiki- He was actually decent friends with Tehutti beforehand. With the 05-01 betrayal he effectively got brainwashed, Makuta filled his head with lies after the amnesia.

Both of them reverted to their non-evil selves once the factors that made them evil in the first place were removed. Ahkmou may have relapsed when he became Makuta's Turaga post-08, but literally nothing regarding that is ever shown in writing, and it's far more likely that, like with Nidhiki in 08, he did what Makuta wanted out of fear rather than malice.

By contrast, Gavla was described as looking down on the others, and wanted to stay with the Makuta even after she got the shadow gunk cleaned out of her system.

There were some decent recolors. The Stars feet are a legitimately good looking and well proportioned foot design and the new armor bits were cool. Other than that, they were yet another set of Avtoran redeco.
But we weren't even supposed to get those sets so I can't really hate them. Just make the best out of it.

They were thinking Ben 10 would bring them money. As it turned out it's dumb to try and sell toys of a popular thing that already has cheaper and more accurate toys in the market. LEGO learnt nothing from it, instead greenlighting Superheroes and Star Wars constraction years later. Again, to the detriment of Bionicle.
This is why companies need homegrown IPs. Because they aren't competing with other toylines. They are offering something you can only get from them.

Agreed. It's lame how they move too. Promotional material always shows them in a perma-crouch with their long ass legs, so I pictured them leaping around and being kind of stealthy and agile, like the Shadow Khan from Jackie Chan Adventures. The way they hold their staffs in both hands suggests a refined fighting style as well. Instead they walk around like big dumb monsters and are kind of sluggish. And of course they have to fucking fly because it's easier to animate.

Yeah, I have a distinct mind image of ser Vorahk in the flying pose so that at least wasn't something the movie team came up with. I have serious doubt the Vahki and the '04 Dark Hunters were meant to fly, however.

The 2005 sets for instance must have been designed all at once because not only do they show them off on the 2nd movie's DVD, the release schedule for the two waves of that year were switched in Europe and the US. The US got the Hordika first while Europe got the Visorak, then the other way around in the 2nd half of the year. I believe the 2008 leaks also showed both winter and summer sets together.
Some aspects of the movie models were definitely based on prototypes, though. Like the Matoran having Slizer or Pohatu Mata type arms instead of Bohrok style ones.

Nidhiki is a better set IMO. Krekka's body is strangely built and a bit finicky thanks to a pointless gimmick where he literally just turns his head left and right, plus when his joints get loose he's a fucking mess to pose. Nidhiki takes up a lot of shelf space, but he's super solid and his functions make a lot more sense.

Nidhiki's about a head taller than a Metru, Krekka is just a tiny bit shorter than Nidhiki but far more robust.
The Hordika reach up to Roodaka's and Sidorak's stomach, and Keetongu's armpit.

It seems to me that Toa Mata Nui was actually supposed to be the GSR. They just thought making it look like Glatorian Mata Nui would sell better and give them an excuse to pack in the golden Ignika, which I appreciate. Recolor Toa Mata Nui grey and silver, take off the shoulder armor, replace the head, and you've honestly got a pretty decent GSR.

I agree that was the general idea. I am fairly sure the designers created some of the sets thinking as them as updated/reimagined version of past sets or characters, but because of story and marketing they couldn't explicitly label them using the old names.

Toa Mata Nui is a generally good set, it's just the haphazard colours that spoil it.

It's a simple fix to the entire Stars wave. Replace Toa Mata Nui's colors with grey and silver, call it the Great Spirit Mata Nui, and pack in two of the MoL. One in Silver, and one in Gold. They could have even put it on the box in bold letters "INCLUDES THE MASK OF LIFE", since even casual bionicle kids knew about its story relevance. Then I would pack in like an exclusive poster or lore pamphlet , to commemorate bionicle ending, and have that serve as the trip down memory lane. Lastly, I'd get rid of his Shield and give him the Red star jetpack instead, keeping the sword so its still an action figure.

I'm thinking of doing the same. I like the design a lot, but the 2007/8 design is *the* one in everyone's eyes (for obvious reasons), and has the strongest thematic presence by far (Mata Nui/Vitruvian man) on top of that. Even if it's not Legendary, it can still be a pretty powerful mask.

I love a lot of parts CCBS introduced, but I still prefer the older system simply for being much more compatible with Technic. I feel like it's much more of a hassle to create anything other than a generic humanoid with CCBS, and yes while it's still possible with some creativity, the old system was so much easier to work with; because it was literally just Technic.

I preferred when the noble and great masks were two castes of a set of 12, as opposed to a different version of a given mask. Like, all hunas are noble and all haus are great and there's no "mask changes from x form to y form" shit.

Was "noble mask" a term they used before '04? Because the Mata basically used Turaga masks just like any other Kanohi in '01. It didn't seem like they were any less powerful than Toa masks.

When I were a kid, I thought the bohrok were armor/upgrade packs for the toa set-wise. Story-wise they felt oppressive. They had a shape that looked impervious to toa weapons (couldn't be stabbed or slashed), each was as strong as a toa, and there was one hive for each good guy. The odds were onesided in favour of the villains. That one picture of Kopaka carrying multiple krana looked both like bullshit and like he was a badass.
Something that has always bothered me about them is their transparent parts. Are they eyes? Are they teeth?

I used to think the same until I bought two 3D printed masks. They weren't even bordeline official like the three masks you cited, they were completely original designs. But as soon as I tried them on a set they felt amazing. One wasn't even top quality and it still felt one of those matte testure masks like the Kraahkan.

People are nostalgic about 2004 because it marked a huge change, ie colors, building system, story etc. The sets aged really badly though. I've always felt this became evident very early, in 2006 or maybe even 2005 in some aspects. 2004 was really fucking weird for Lego in general though.

I think Lhikan & Kikanalo is the only really good set from that year. Kikanalo was the first set with fully poseable elbows and knees. And Lhikan did away with some glaring flaws the Toa Metru had, like the color schemes and the weird hunchback look. In fact I'd even say L&K is less of a 2004 set and more of a proto-2005 set.

Even Lhikan isn't too much of a step-up from the Metru themselves.

I think Nokama and Nuju both did the neck better than Lhikan, mainly because the chins of their masks were large enough to hid how long the neck was. Of course, that then makes their masks quite difficult to use on a different body without heavily limiting the head movement.

Additionally, he still has the problems all of the Metru have with their arms. I'll be honest, as beloved as it is, the Toa Metru build has the worst shoulders of any Toa build. The weird angle, the lack of a ball joint or outward hinge at the shoulder, the gear function being terrible for half the sets that had it and the angle making the arms clash with the head.

At least with the Nuva and some of the Mata, having the balljoint at the shoulder allowed the arms to both reach forward or back, and to swing outwards by a little.

He also has the gold plastic problem, too. None of my Lhikan's gold pieces aren't covered in flaky bits of flash now.

I'd probably go with the second option, it just triggers my autism that I'd be forced to use a G2 head for Artakha whereas Karzahni would almost certainly use a G1 one.

Both the Ignika and the Vahi are gold in their natural state. Logically, the third golden mask would be gold as well.

It could be argued that having only the mask stand out from the rest of the color scheme reflects its background as a prize either brother could have won. Of course it could just as well be argued that Artakha of all people would probably find a way to recolor the mask even if it doesn't do so by itself, so in the end you can really just do whatever you feel works better.
