Just admit you're biased against licensed and creative themes. This is a shit list, most of Lego's themes are decent overall, the worst are usually the ones that are plain bad like Jack Stone, or the ones that are just minifig sellers like some superhero sets.

I need some help deciding. I think I could go either way but right now I am leaning towards Tie Fighter + X-Wing because I think the proportions and everything of these are great and they look like they offer good parts for MOCs. But then the Imperial Shuttle has a cool design and some nice features and it's an older set so I assume it will get more expensive. But what also bothers me is how the proportions of it are not right. The Star Destoyer is just a very nice display set.

So what do you think?

You missed out Alpha Team.

Also, as much as I love Rock Raiders, game and sets, I cannot call the series great. And I honestly think Star Wars and Harry Potter should switch, really. Fantastic Beasts belongs in bad, though. I saw sets sitting at half price, and going nowhere, for quite a while, and Lego Batman, to my mind, just isn't that good at all.

Props for declaring Exo-Force good, though. Still have my sets from when they were first released.

The Tie and X-wing and pretty solid builds, really. Good to have a play with, good to sit there and enjoy the presence of it. I work from home, as a phone operator, and I'll frequently have a lego model on my desk, and mess around with it, while I'm working. Sometimes I'll build, too, when it's a regular caller.

Point is, it's a good build, with some interesting techniques. If it's from a franchise you like, too, then all the better. I don't regret my purchases.

I feel you, anon. I've only been building again for a while, and I find organizing all the miscellaneous bags and boxes I have to be really annoying.
Slowly working on it, but I think it's really the only answer to your dilemma. Plastic drawer organizers or the box organizers with little dividers are cheap and a good option.
I think organizing by part rather than color is generally the way to go, but everyone does it differently.

Really debating on buying the Tie Fighter, since I have one of each of the rebel ships (except the B-Wing, but who really cares about the B-Wing anyway), and they have nothing to go up against.

Thank you. I need to get more stanchions, and I'd like to make the colour uniform on them, but I dunno. I'd like to make a geared technic base, so I can set them at various angels, and hook up some power functions and play like that because... I get bored at work. The stands are slanted downwards, so they can sit on the top of a bookshelf, and you still get good enough angels to enjoy them. Same with the Y-wing posted a couple threads ago.

The TIE is good, but I would say it doesn't feel like it's worth the money, try coupon any purchase, if you can, but it's a worthwhile model to have, for sure!

A huge pain in the ass. Whenever you add new bricks you have to rearrange things because all of the drawers are a fixed size. You can tell from that picture that he gave up on sorting and just dumps his bricks into the bins. Terrible.
Go buy a ton of zip lock bags and boxes, it's a billion times cheaper and easier to deal with.

Guys... do you think that LEGO will ever produce the older elements again?

I was checking the Bricklink to build a Lego 6286 Skull's Eye Schooner.

So far, so good, but there were a few pieces that were yellowed, like the pirate flags...

ABS react to oxygen and light, which can be fixed with peroxide of hydrogen...

But the chemical chains inside the plastic apparently can only be fixed if it's heated again into 85~105° Celsius...

Which is crazy, because it'll probably deform the pieces (maybe not, I believe that ABS deforms at 200º C)

But the thing is, pretty much these awesome sets will all die because the brittleness... they'll all break down. Even if you fix the outer layer damaged by the oxidation, you won't be able to fix its brittleness... unless you heat the plastic.

By the way, you can clean the flags/sails with a mixture... but the cloth will lose it's stiffness, to recover it you need to use spray starch, apparently that's what LEGO used to make it stiff.

I'm worried about some pieces though...

So... do you know how to heat the pieces until 85º~105º without melting it?

Is it possible?

Is there some way to recover its properties?

As far as i know, the whitening should work fine if you put the pieces in mildly warm water, in the sunlight. Check out some videos by the8bitguy on youtube, he does this often for old tech and it works well.

I use ziploc bags and keep them all in these Sterilite shelved containers. Vertical organization with shelves is a good setup because it takes a smaller amount of floor space and all your parts are immediately accessible. Sterilite makes a variant that has two normal-sized shelves on the lower two-thirds, and two shallow shelves that stack on top of each other on the top third. This is nice for keeping loose stuff like assembled minifigs or other small builds that you want off the table.

Being able to see the bags really helps, because after a little while you develop muscle memory and it becomes reflexive. When I'm building something, I don't even have to think about where the pieces are because I keep all the bags in order within the drawers, so if I want the bag of 1x1 bricks, I know it's in the rightmost stack, in the bottom drawer, on the far right, closest to the front. Barrels, crates and garbage cans are in the leftmost stack, third drawer from the top, on the left side closest to the back. Curved bricks and slopes are directly in front of that bag. I could list the locations of all the bags with perfect accuracy so someone who's never been in my Lego room before could find exactly the piece they're looking for.

Apparently you can heat the pieces from 85 to 125. It needs to be tested.

It'll fix the polymer chains.

About the outer layer oxidation that makes it go yellow can be fixed with hydrogen peroxide, it'll will remove the oxygen that's bonding with the polymers and make they original.

But removing the oxidation doesn't recreate the polymers bonding, only reaching into the glass transition temperature can fix that.

I think it doesn't deform, still. You'd need an air oven for that.

I do the same and also eliminated the ziplock. Just use basic plastic bags for freezing so there is no hassle in opening/closing bags.
Also fuck sorting by piece. I put all my pieces of the same color into one bag. For more common colors like grey I have 8 bags with different categories like only curved slopes and wedges, only straight slopes and wedges, all parts with clips and bars, etc. I don't run into problems because I feel the parts. Much easier than trying to find the one purple 1x1 round plate you have in a bin full of them in 25 different colors. I can't imagine how huge and expensive a wall of tiny drawers would be to encompass all parts acceptably.

Just how many sets do the people who make these huge mocs own? Have they collected LEGO for years and own like over 100 sets with many having over 1000 pieces? So it has finally arrived - my MISB 6933 Blacktron 2 set.

First of all I'd like to thank you guys for your advice. I have decided to keep it as is and order a replacement, used set, to play around with and display next to it.

What struck me when first inspecting it and looking at it is the amount of work and effort that went into the packaging.
You can tell it was from a different time. The attention to detail is in my opinion much greater than with modern sets.

There are a lot of shots that detail how the features of the vehicle work (internal flap) and I like how the parts and minifigure are on display inside the box.
It certainly feels like it was a labor of love and the shots of the vehicle feel "alive" in a sense.

I honestly am not really big on the whole soul vs soulless concept but I really do feel it applies to older vs modern LEGO sets.

Also I believe that they made a mistake when they did away with the alternate build idea. This sets has alternate builds, I love that the entire back of the box is dedicated to these and while objectively the ones for this set (and actually most of them) are not amazing they offer variety and a new set of goals for kids to experience.

I'm wondering what you guys think.
Am I just imagining things regarding the box/image quality? Are alternate builds obsolete? Is there such a thing as a "soul" when regarding this type of merchandise?

Yeah I think so. Like you said, it feels like a labor of love, obviously lots of work went into the presentation. Like emphasizing those 8x8 dome pieces, while keeping them separated out so they don't get scratched up in shipping.

And I really wish Lego had kept on with the alternate builds.

No, it's just the empty space inside the piece. It just happens to be a happy pair of coincidences that the bun fits perfectly flush against the airtank brace and the cutout is at just the right place to fit the nub of the tanks.

I do love the idea of them branching out and doing these small packs for different themes, even offering unique minifigures in them, but I feel like $10 is just a bit expensive for what you get. I dunno, maybe I'm wrong. Like I said I'm not against them and I'll probably pick up the Mars one, but I'd just wish they threw in a somewhat larger build at that price.

Neither do I, but I just bought pic related. Looks almost exactly like all the mechs I'd build as a kid, and the model's really detailed and articulated.

Inspiration is basically a general interest in lifelike articulation and multi-functionality, and refining on execution over the years.

Sort of thinking about a Sonic the Hedgehog based on the Mickey frame, also possibly Super Mario or Donald Duck.

Over the past few years, Lego's overall quality has declined, and the prices have either risen or stayed the same. Lego's main values are based upon precision, perfection, and quality/durable products.

Issues with their products are becoming way too common, and in turn, not much is being done to resolve it.

Complain to customer service or write Lego a letter and mail it; they will forward it to people who will change these things. I did this yesterday, and noted various things such as:

> same coloured pieces from the same set have different tones (dark bley can be lighter or darker between 2 pieces)

> the printing issue that arises when printing yellow/flesh tones on dark coloured pieces, even though all promotional material and packaging shows flawless printing of said part

> increasingly brittle bricks, I've had more bricks break on me in the past 3 years than I did as a kid, and I've been collecting/buying Lego for 15 years; nowadays I just display sets, and have bricks crack just from sitting on a shelf!!!!!

Honestly, if this is a smaller pack that's 10 bucks (about 20 maplebucks) then it is a phenomenal value and a step in the right direction.

The older figure packs, early ninjago / city / castle ish era, came with 4 minifigures, tons of weapons, a build or two, and often a pet/animal of some kind. That was for 20 maplebucks.

Then, during nexo knights, the packs dropped a figure. Now it was 3 figures, enough weapons for exactly three figures plus a spare or two, and a minor build. Still 20 (maple)bucks.

During the lego movie, the figure pack that came out was 2 minifigures, neither of them exclusives, two sewer baby accessories (exclusive), and a build that was a wall made out of a car door. This was 20 bucks. Compare it to the 20 dollar battlepack - 4 figures, three of them unique to the current series, one of them totally unique to Lego, and three small builds.

(And compare to a star wars/chima battlepack - 4/3 figures, one unique, plus vehicle/siege weapon and banners. Still 20 bucks)

Also compare to a minifigure blindbag - 5 bucks for one figure and an accessory.

Honestly, the current carded battlepacks have no value and no purpose. A polybag would be a cheaper build, minifigure blind bags would be a cheaper option for a specific figure, and the small 4-minifig battlepack boxes are a better army-build value and build value.

If this new pack is really 10 bucks US, then it's a good deal - a unique fig, two uncommon and one common plus a weapon stash build. It becomes its own thing - a series sample pack, rather than trying to be an inferior version of any of the other things I've compared it to.

It makes alternative builds with one set unnecessarily harder than it should be and it's probably one of the reasons we don't have alt-builds on the back of the box anymore.

And on a personal note, filling up a set with tons of colored bricks that don't fit the final model sort of feels like taking one of those cheap Chinese bootlegs and spraypainting it the right color - the final result may look alright but you still know that there's a complete mess under the hood.
It doesn't really feel like a "high end - best quality" product anymore and more like someone tossed their warehouse overstock in.

How so? Most other sets are made up of a variety of colours, the only difference here is that there's a lot more of certain colours than other. If colour choice is holding you back from alt builds then maybe you're just shit at building, they can make one set just fine, no reason others can't be made. Having pieces that you will never see once the build is completed be a different colour than the ones you can see changes literally nothing, nothing at all.

I have near 120000 pieces (appr 500 sets removing the cmf), collected since late 2016 or so I believe. My mocs are usually quarter size of you pic, but I think I can pull of builds of this size.

I used to buy a lot of in-house themes at discount(especially creator). Nowadays I buy only sets with lots of new colors/pieces or are great parts packs.

I also have a tendency to buy useful parts form blink occasionally. Even so, it's not uncommon to buy few missing parts for each project.

No.
That was because people kept complaining about them. Lego got too many complaints from parents how there were no instructions for the alt builds so they decided to scrap them. Buy Creator if you want alt builds.

It's money. Pure and simple. Lego, as a company, wants to make money. Therefore, they take the decisions that make them more money. Year after year, they do millions of dollars worth of research to figure out how they can make more money.

1- It makes building easier.
2- If a customer somehow fucks up their build, they are less likely to buy another product. Therefore, it's best that the most customers possible can succesfully finish a build.
3- Customer support is expensive. The less people call up to complain, the cheaper it is. Also, ever tried explaining how to fix a build mistake over the phone? Good luck.
4- AFOLs are a tiny, tiny, INFINITESIMALLY TINY fraction of the customerbase. Pleasing them doesn't nearly get the monetary rewards compared to pleasing the average customer (a kid).

Trust me. They've ran the numbers.

I ended up liking the Molten Man set this is made of a lot more than expected.
Only issues I have is the poorly done head/neck (why is that CCBS shoulderpad gunmetal instead of grey?) and the antennae that are supposed to resemble dripping lava somewhat limiting the movement of the legs.

Sadly they don't change the ID of the piece when they change materials, so it's difficult to know.

The tress has 3 ids now, one for the old plastic, one for the one that they used up 2018 and the new, degradable one.

So, as long as it's ABS they won't change the id. But the formula has changed multiple time.

And we'll never know which pieces have what.

For example, they removed Cadmium in 79/80.

Apparently they're now using bromite since 2002.

For every $100 Technic set Lego sells to an adult, they sell $50,000 worth of Ninjago to children.

You shouldn't mistake "marketing to adults" with "adults are the primary market".

According to a spokesman for Lego in an interview with (I believe) the Brothers Brick about two years ago, he stated that AFOLs make up about 5% of Lego's market.

The only thing I remember ever hearing on Eurobricks was that around 10-15% of sales/profits come from AFOLs. That's a fluctuating figure from 2009-2012, sometime around then.
It's noteable that this figure was obviously from before the push for the adult market started with stuff like Brickheads, The Lego Movie, James Bond, Stranger Things and weird one-off stuff for Dimensions. It must be closer to 20% now.

New minidoll theme for 2019 will be Space Friends like the other anon said, but in 2023 the new theme will be magical girls in the Earth realm after the link between Elfland and Earth is severed. Main characters will be a team of teenage girls from Earth who are recruited by a handsome older man who wants to collect several hidden treasures "of great evil" scattered around Earth "to stop them from falling into the wrong hands". HOM is actually the bad guy orchestrating everything to collect the evil objects for his own use. Supposed antagonist is a thief not much older than the girls who may or may not be half-elven. Gimmicks will be magical smartphones that contact Elfland and are collectable like Nexo shields, and cute animal familiars for each of the girls. Sets will all be scaled-down versions of famous landmarks around the world where they fight the local monsters for possession of the artifact.

On its own the green Porsche set would be a no brainer purchase. But like this it's way overpriced. They did this with the Ford GT40 and now with the Dodge Charger. And they even do it with the Star Wars Microfighters.

I've always liked the killdozer, and this was a nice excuse to build it. I'm pretty pleased with the mix of old and new dark grey making it look like mismatched panelling (although i was really just running out of grey).
I'm happy with the angle of the side panels and how flush they are, but the back spike thing was essentially an after thought.

Buy the pieces directly from LEGO, if it's not on Pick-a-Brick you can buy in the replacement pieces on Support.

You can pretty much buy anything that's not licensed. So you can't buy, let's say, that Overwatch girl, or pieces with its symbols, but you can buy any other piece, if it's still in production.

The prices are pretty good, almost Bricklink level.

I'll do it with the Overwatch pink pieces.

Also, I read on LEGO that you can download the old Instruction Books from fan sites, or the new ones as PDF.

So it's considered, by LEGO itself, that it's okay to download the old instructions bookles scans. And it's okay to use the official ones, even if you don't own that set.

The orcs and the dwarves had an old dispute to resolve (nobody remember what it was). They choose to settle it with a match of checkers boxing. The elves were selected as arbiter, since they were unlikely to favor as side.

One, is it cheaper to buy the individual pieces for retired sets.
Two, is there some kind of easy way on Bricklink when viewing the catalog to buy all the parts of a set or for it to somehow auto find the pieces and just put them in the cart for you to see how much?

Pirates flags are crazy expansive, but it's still somewhat lower.

But there're some pieces that won't be as original as the original set. Sometimes they have same ID, but a different design ID, so it's the "same" piece, but not really.

the one scene, where two young princess were quarreling over their treasure they inherited, so they asked Siegfried if he could divide it between the two
as a reward, he would have gotten the Sword Baldung from the treasure

Good news: that other anon is talking out his ass and no parents complained about a lack of provided instructions. The actual reason there aren't alt builds on every set anymore is because Lego has to pay someone to come up with the alt builds and it's cheaper not to have to pay extra.

Only get it if Lando is important to you, they will never stop re-releasing Snowspeeders, they don't even bother changing the design slightly.

A set is available for roughly 12 to 18 months, it came out in April.
But really, you will never find better deals than 50% off. Unless those other sets are also suspect to retiring in a few months just buy this one.

You'll probably want to spray some in a disposable container, then dab it with a rag and use the rag to wipe the dye onto the piece. It might come out too thickly if you spray it directly onto the piece.

They only stop then because that's when they started to keep a digital record of their instructions. I'd bet if they were contacted by some of these sites that archive old instructions, they'd work with them to try and complete their own digital archives as well. But for Lego, it's probably man hours they don't have available to spend on finding copies, scanning, cleaning up, and making sure it's all accurate.

They had their run, and ended. Rarely does a theme get any more than 3 years shelf life. Elves just ended, and right now there's really only Ninjago, but Hidden Side is releasing in August.

According to the customer service reps I talked to Ninjago, Nexo Knights, Friends are licensed themes due to the cartoons and the way royalties are split with whoever airs/finances the shows. This is also why you can't just buy parts from the sets on bricks & pieces directly.

I always thought people were more upset because Lego still refused to make this ONE change on the snowspeeder while other frequently rereleased star wars vehicles have gone through tremendous improvements in their builds. It's really lazy.

It's designed to have the roof come off easily, so I needed something that stays in place without actually attaching. The lever bases catch the edge of the windshield, it works but leaves a bit of a gap.

Bionicle is 100% Lego, though they did use outside help on the various storytelling aspects. The property remains with Lego despite this.
Next Knights had an animated series much like Ninjago and Chima, though for one reason or another it wasn't nearly as popular as Ninjago, probably similar to how the theme as a whole didn't appear to last in popularity.
