Buy a robot damashii of your favorite mecha series.
If you like Gunndamm then pick up a snapkit.
If you're a cheapass, see if there's any ancient Revoltechs of your fave mecha.

I agree with above poster about snapkits, but there's more selection than just gundam such as Little Batters Experience. There's also quite a few candy toys if you want a small but varied collection such as Assault Kingdom or Hagan No Zista. But for a first mecha, just get a transformer.
