Harmony Gold pretty much owns all of the rights to the US names and backstory used when they rewrote Macross, Southern Cross, Mospeda into Robotech.
Any future releases will have to either use all new names, or use the Japanese names for each franchise and they can't use ANY plot details exclusive to the Robotech lore (meaning all of the legacy Southern Cross characters can't be said Macross characters kids, the Robotech Masters and Invid backstories can't be used, and you can't have any Macross references in Mospeda) for any new material.
>>7561885Because for years, Macross basically was banned from the US because a US judge in the 90s ruled that HG had exclusive worldwide rights to the entire Macross franchise, based off of one of the two producers of the original Macross property (who was only involved when the show became a huge hit and the episode count expanded and they needed more money to make said episodes) fucking over the other one, who actually created Macross. And said actual creator, not being able to fight it in court until they A. had the money to sue their partner in Japanese court for fucking them over and B. Finding a US court who wouldn't say "fuck you Jap scum, we don't recognize your court system".
Shit came to a head when in the late 90s, Harmony Gold started actually SUING US import shops that carried Macross toys, saying any toys from the franchise had to be sold to them by HG and this led to the creator basically embargoing all toys from US sale until the legal stuff got cleared up once and for all
