An interesting older Faber post that already mentions 2020 as the year "where everything will connect". We already know Cryoshell is involved with the B project, and since they're mentioned here along with Rebel Nature and Waveborn, I wonder if Faber's endgame could be creating a quasi-Bionicle story within the broader Rebel Nature setting. I remember there was something about strange high-speed evolution caused by plastic in the food chain, so a fairly elegant way to insert biomechanical races into the setting would be to just jump forward into the "time after time" where that process has been going on for thousands or millions of years.

Imo it's more bothersome that his eyes are pointing forward like he's performing a constant wild take. I think he looks better if you bend them forward, but the hoses on his head keep pulling them back. A shame the designers couldn't come up with a way to keep them in place.

in general as a kid I had a hard on for villains, I wish I had bought more Toa, since they were usually more interesting sets than the small villains

Never got why they acted like an unmasked head was something censorship-worthy, it's not like we couldn't seem them fine enough on the toys and in other media. And they had statues of Mata heads in the movies anyway.
I thought the real reason they never showed the faces was because the models clearly had no faces under their masks, but apparently it was a deliberate choice because even the directors said they didn't want to reveal too much of the characters. I don't get it. Maybe they were just lazy to design them or couldn't think of a way to make the heads not look creepy.

Well, there was one deleted scene on the MoL DVD where Takua trips while playing kolhii and loses his mask where you can kinda see the face but yeah, it's still odd. Funny enough, it wouldn't even bother me as much (you're never going to display your sets without masks, would you?) if they didn't do stupid things like masks over other masks

Huh, this looks a lot closer to the 2003 set than the final model did. I finally understand how they adapted the legs from set to movie.

I'll never understand why the final movie model had to screw his proportions and make him look like a chicken, with that short body, really long legs, weak shoulder thin arms. Nothing like a "Shadow Titan" should be.

I also never liked the movie Kraahkan and wish they didn't warp its design in order accomodate a mouth. I don't like movie mouths period but Teridax was the last one of all who needed one.

I also miss that cool tube the set had in its torso. It added girth without making him too bulky. The movie model filled out the side of his torso but it made him look too blocky.

UD had Nidhiki's and Krekka's parts on him in canon, that's how he Shadowed One found out Makuta killed them and that initiated the great off-screen war between the DHs and the Brotherhood. If Makuta looked like he did in the movie, TSO would have never found out.

the colour scheme is so jarring, the propeller hands are goofy and his build is still boring, not to mention his mask looks nothing like that of his former selves, it looks like the mask of time

My Lewa disintegrated in 2 weeks due to his lime limbs.
You made the better choice. Also the propeller hands are why he's the only Nuva who kept his traditions. Pohatu's always been the most differently built Toa from his team, and it's good to see at least this bit was carried over.

No. I'm expecting some kind of spiritual successor to Bionicle. A series of blog posts from the perspective of islanders that tell a story, maybe. Some art, maybe some atmospheric animation. Faber is just going to build a world for us to play in and Cryoshell will give it some background music.

I don't know if it's an unpopular opinion, but I'm kind of glad the 08 Toa didn't look like the Toa Nuva. I've always seen the simpler and cleaner Mata as the superior designs. The 02 Kanohi Nuva simply looked too busy, some downright ugly. The main problem with the 08 Toa is that they were straight up bad sets, with most having either mediocre masks, underwhelming weapons, awful color schemes, abysmal builds or any combination of those.

I like how varied and almost creepily lanky the Mata were despite their heavy piece limits. Imo Toa don't necessarily need to look uniform and "traditionally heroic", they can be oddly proportioned or shaped freaks too. That's part of why I liked the Mahri so much.

Personally, I just like that he's still interested in Bionicle and thinks it (or a similar concept) could be made relevant again, and I like the art, even if some of the pictures are just reposts of older stuff. I don't expect this thing to lead to a toy line or anything like that, though. Maybe a few more images, ideas and perhaps a song. Those people that want a continuation of Greg's serials or a straight reboot with all of G1's characteristics returning are the farthest from reality.
What I do hope is that Faber actually wants to do something about (or related to) Bionicle and isn't just using the fans' gullibility and desperation to attract attention to his or Cryoshell's other projects. I know very little of him, but I don't think he'd be that kind of guy.

That was the in-story excuse. The rubber masks were probably decided on first.

They didn't, though. The Mata/Nuva had oversized heads and feet but that wasn't creepy as much as cartoony. And the Metru were fine. The Inika were long and lanky with squat torsos.

I like the Thornax launchers too, I liked that the fruit had rubber spikes so they couldn't roll away as easily (plus they looked cool and exotic), and the launcher itself had a very pleasant texture to it that felt nice to squeeze.

Also, while I am all for the Cordak blaster because of how badass it looks and how fun it is to rapidfire them all out at once, I will never forgive the squid launcher for tearing my child-self's heart in half for having the rubber squids' tails rip off from the stress of pulling them back mere days after I bought the set. I only ever pulled them back as far as the launcher's axle, which was a necessity due to the squids getting stuck inside the launcher and not launching 90% of the time.

ehh, it's probably as close to the description as you can get while still fitting in with the design language of the all other masks

yes, it's supposed to be grey-green, but it fits with the ignika and vahi this way, and since artakha made the nuva symbols, the okotan writing-looking designs on the mask are appropriate

and the silhouette sort of resembles the "hellboy" olisi too

I think the G2 MoC might have been partly inspired by the Avohkii, especially given that Ekimu ended up taking Takanuva's role. But it's not blatant like some other homages from G2, so it's still distinct enough.
Bottom line, the G2 MoC can be worked into G1 without issues. I think other G2 masks can do the same, but I digress.

I got two ideas. One's more fanservice-y 2001 inspired adaptation like >>7577112 said. Drop hints of something bigger without feeling like sequel bait. Story structure would resemble Mask of Light, have scenes of both Takua and the Toa, but they often crossing roads. Takua is an audience surrogate investigating stuff about Makuta to have breathing room between action scenes, until the two plots cross at the end.
Minimal focus on the mask hunt. Only have key scenes with the Toa where they all show off their powers and character dynamics.
Ends with either the Kaita vs. Manas or Toa vs. Shadow Toa (or drop both if necessary, all this would bee too much for a film, but they'd be doable in a series) while the islanders clash with the Rahi on the surface, then Toa vs. Makuta as the climax. Extend Makuta's dialogue with the creation-destruction concepts of Swinnerton and Templar.

Second idea would be to drop the mask hunt and Takua and all that fluff and strip the concept to its basics. What if this was never meant to be a toy line? Focus on the Toa learning why these robo people who hail them as gods live on a primitive island, investigate what their leaders are hiding and uncover hints about Mata Nui and why Makuta put him in a coma. Less insight into islander culture, as the Toa are the main characters. Set up the Bohrok here too, and save MN's awakening and the discovery of his abandoned inner system to the 3rd movie.
In both cases, the style would be like the Ghost CGI ads with the tone and color palette of MNOG and the comics, shifting between dark and moody, and charming and bright where appropriate, but with an underlying sense that there's something not right. Don't make it edgy shit, also avoid a childish quipfest.
Characters would either be fully robotic or only have organic stuff at the joints or bendy bits. Nathan Furst does the score adapting the Miramax tunes to MNOG's stylings and recomposing MNOG music in his own style with more techno elements.

No duh, anon asked what our *ideal* movie would be like, no one's claiming it would be a realistic possibility. But no, keep the TLM style as far away as possible. The original Lego Movie and the Batman one worked because they were something new and they had plenty of material to draw from that had comedic potential and mainstream familiarity with, general Lego building, famous franchises blended together, tons of cameos and Batman's crazy franchise history. By the time Ninjago came around, the formula was wearing thin and audiences didn't know what to make of it cause most people had no clue about Ninjago and how its world was supposed to work. It just left general viewers and fans both disappointed cause it wasn't a good adaptation, nor a good parody, nor a particularly good standalone flick.
Bionicle had comedy but the main draw for so many was the serious epic fantasy stuff that no other Lego theme and very few toy franchises had. If someone were to adapt it, they should build on its strengths instead of trying to ape a style many people don't care for anymore, especially when most moviegoers don't even know the franchise. Old Systemfags who'd otherwise support Lego movies would stay away because it's Bonkle, fans would feel cheated and the general audience wouldn't care cause they'd think it's another forced childish cash-grab like Ninjago or the Playmobil movie, just with unrecognizable characters and an even more alien world. What kind of self-aware jokes would they even tell that would be suited for Bionicle but also be understandable to normies?

Probably not. The requirement is already high enough since you need a mask with a longer axle specifically designed for a Mahri visor, or a mask with a hole instead of an axle, otherwise the visor won't stay in place. So that leaves the Faxon, the Volitak, the Tryna, the Miru Phantoka (group 1), the Ignika, Kanohi Nuva Mistika and Vultraz's mask (group 2). And even then, the spikes on the visor might make it very difficult, if not impossible, for it to fit into the mask.

Still looks dopey as hell, I think the Manas were fucked from the get-go when they decided to make them remote controlled and put two of them in the same box, greatly diminishing the piece count on each model. To be fair other 01 Rahi had the same issue, Lego had to disperse the piece limit across two models per set, both of which also had to incorporate elaborate gimmicks. On the positive side, this meant we got a lot of neat recolored pieces, but on the negative side, some of the builds suffered and they were too pricey for most kids.

The RC gimmick works better on the Manas since they're so flat. From my experience pretty much any change in elevation makes the Mana Ko fall over, so having it as the main model would have made the set less playable out of the box.

This. Part of the reason G2 didn't pull together was that they tried to make it lighthearted and funny as per Lego's house style since 2011 or so. You can't make Bionicle lighthearted and funny, it's too far removed from human experience. There's nothing "funny" about it.

Even with the recent surge in Bionicle memes the "joke" usually just amounts to "gosh, weren't bionicles really fucking weird", and any further discussion just turns into reminiscing about G1.

Maybe in some rare amount. IIRC several of the early 2006 sets were produced in flat silver before they were produced in PLG. The reverse happened with some of the 2005 playsets, which is why the pearl gold Kraahkan exists.

I hate this mask. Not because of the looks, mind you. It's probably one of the better looking Glatorian masks visually. It's that the face is wide open, meaning that unless you use Glatorian-head, it's going to look bad. And Glatorian heads don't even look that good to begin with, and then there's the whole fragile joints-thing.

I've given up in trying to find a use for Glatorian helmets. I think they work better as armor though I haven't tried it myself. I'd use Kiina's helmet on an aquatic Rahi for example.
At least HF helmets cover the face more.

I like the idea of Naho being a super special Metru Gali just like how Lhikan is a super special Metru Tahu. Her hook axes can even form a shield, just like his fire greatswords.

I didn't like giving her a silver Kaukau or Kakama because '02 silver doesn't match either '03 or '06 silver. And since I chose to use a Ruru for Tuyet, it also means that all three of the Metru Water Toa have translucent masks, and I like that consistency (I had to re-purpose some of Tuyet's parts to workshop this design, so I can't show all three together until I get more parts). Also, Lake Naho's falls are shaped like Gali's Kaukau, but maybe the Turaga attributed that partially to Naho herself as well.

Of all the Toa with zero lines of dialogue that suffer a horrible fate in all realities, Naho is my favorite.

I think it's how the designs branched out in such an interesting way. Think about it. With other toy lines you have limitations on the relationships between the toys, with Bohrok and Kal you had nothing but questions. Were they made by Mata Nui? If so, why were they such assholes? Where did the spooky brains come from? Why were the Bahrag sentient/intelligent? Designs aside, the sort of top-down exponential lore potential was amazing. I was beyond hyped when the Kal dropped, I think that was the absolute height of my bionicle obsession. The Rahkshi were okay but they just didn't have the right visual "tone" for the story and seemed kinda goofy compared to the Kal.

I dunno man, I hate to say it but I would've been okay with the entire line ending right after the Kal being defeated. Everything after that was just a very slow downhill slide. The Metru stuff was interesting but once the tribal aesthetic was abandoned and the Polynesian angle and the mystery of it, I got less and less interested.

Nah. Ga-Koro is the most fully realized section of the game; every village afterwards is less interesting than the last. All you can really do is grind skills for Kolhii, and the Kolhii games suck anyway. Also there's a chance the game will just plumb forget your progress at one point.

On the plus side, the "Principles" the game introduces are my favorite piece of underutilized worldbuilding. Would've been cool to see Hahli make use of them as a Toa.

I can't find a source, but I remember there being some kind of story about how they had to compete for their masks. I like the idea that they're the same design language, plus we never really got a canon version of the Olisi (iirc it had horns and looked scary, so the MoCo works well enough for me).

Manually edit the file that has your stats. And while you're at it, max out all your stats so you don't have to grind.
Or buy loads of Kolhii balls in Po-Koro for 1 widget each and sell them in Ta-Koro for twice as much.

only nostalgia can save the inika. They have the fewest action figures of any line (light-up weapons, a launcher, and glow in the dark eyes) and were clones like all their predecessors, with literally only nuparu and arguably hewkii deviating from the exact same build. Not to mention that they had those stupid, nigh-unusable organic masks. Story-wise they were fine, but set-wise they were a dumpster fire. This is coming from someone who owned all six growing up. They very quickly just dissolved into my tub of pieces, never to be thought of again.
