>>7582278This used to be more common knowledge before V came out divorced from the bulk of the series by a generous 10 years, hot off the heels of the much laughed-at piss poor story of Peacewalker.
It used to be more common knowledge that Kojima was not a good, but sinply an ego Godzilla who oh-so-innocently pumped himself up as being responsible for the work of others by masquerading as being like a film director despite game development not translating to filmmaking in a way that would lend credit to the director's seat as much as film. Fans could acknowledge him as a loveabe blowhard and enjoy his games in spite of that.
In 2002, japanese game purchases comprised around 50% of all sales in the industry. As of 2006, they comprised only 15%. Such was the impact of casualized, online gaming with the advent of the 7th generation of consoles. This signaled the shift to westernized games, and marked the complete change in the face of the audience. A new generation who knew nothing before 2005 apart from maybe a couple games their parent bought them; becoming increasingly myopic with the passing of time.
So by the time V came out, this new generation wanted to hop onto the MGS train and pretend they'd been there all along to blend in with the community(infecting it with their lack of perspective and general ignorance) just like they always do. And while V copy+pasted industry trends wholesale, resembling a Far Cry clone more than an entry in the it's own franchise; know-nothing casuals and newcomers ate it up. The kind of people who 'like' something but don't actually have the same level of attachment that results in being remotely critical about something you're passionate about.
