The LEGO patents expired long, long ago. It can only last for about 20 years. It's public domain. But they do have their copyrights. The Minifig was considered a 3D trademark, so no one can copy the minifig design.
But yeah, LEGO dropping in quality is a huge mistake... that's the whole point of buying LEGO. I believe that Mega Bloks stepped up their game, they're almost on a par with LEGO quality.
I've always liked stickers better though... I don't know why people don't like it. But LEGO should have a program that let you print or buy any of their designs, so we'd never lose the "specialized" pieces.
