UV rays along with the heat from direct sunlight will do a number on the plastic. This will speed up the breaking-down process. It is a misconception that plastic will never biodegrade; it will but into toxic, brittle mess that will eventually become powder.
That said, I'm not saying to be paranoid about your toys. Just make sure that they aren't always in the sun for long.
