>>7608651The reason it happens is that many adult women struggle with body image. It's not the kids that plan these things, its the adults projecting their insecurities onto kids. Kids probably don't think twice about this stuff, honestly.
I looked at the Kickstarter, and I was prepared for it to be a lot dumber than it was. The "character" bios are really bad, for sure. But the core concept of "Barbie-scale dolls with different body shapes" is fine, and though 1/6 dolls like these aren't my thing, I'm sure they could sell decently well in stores if they just focused on the dolls and not the characterization.
The dolls seem well-made. I honestly expected them to not have a prototype ready based on the bio images and the terrible amount of funding they had gathered so far. I was surprised to see that they had gone with double-jointed elbows and knees (citing articulation as a goal), and had a well-made prototype ready to go. They even took doll customizers into account, which is something I haven't seen many companies do.
Unfortunately they aren't getting anywhere near their funding goal. I'm guessing they tried to crutch on the "projecting parents" market instead of targeting people who just like dolls and would probably buy more varieties of dolls. Oh well
