another anon’s post inspired me to build this absolute unit. fucker’s a head taller than brutaka and a lot wider. I have both a green and a red eye piece for it, and I added the nuva armor to round out those 90-degree shoulder dropoffs.

I think Takadox is my favourite canister set out there. Super damn Unique, Ehlek is cool too. Barrakis had the best unique builds in the era where Inika/Piraka builds were taking everything over.

I'm honestly not really into Mahri Nui stuff because I think deep sea diving is a dumb theme, but I'm definitely all fucking over sea creatures so I'm gonna find some room to leave my Barraki on display. I also want to find a Gadunka and Nocturn too to get them even more company. May even get Karzahni too if I can ever find a nice price.

Well, I replaced all lime parts in her with Lewas 2008 limbs and hands. Lewas lime parts made in through the years with only a few tiny craws, while Hahli's are completely destroyed.
2007's lime parts were a shame for Lego.

Because I wanted to make a custom Skakdi head.
I know its a sin, but I would do it again.
And I can still refine it, add details, re-work the eyes, re-spray it, get into better/symetrical shape with sandpaper.

I´m used to be a carpenter, so I´m a craftsman, so I just can't resist working on Bionicle parts.

It was always the idea behind Bionicle to ceate your own stuff. I just take it to another level.
Its my stuff afterall, I had my fun with all of it as a kid.

When I was a kid, the little sister of a friend, (she was my age, 8-9) came over together with him once back then.
She saw my Lewa Phantoka and his ugly Miru.
She was obsessed how cute he looked, like said he looked like a green puppy with big eyes.

I don't know anon, I felt this was one of the most needlessly overdesigned masks and I can't unsee that dumb duckbill. It's also way too blocky, reaching all the way to the back of the head.

I myself am way more dissapointed about the non-true color-schemes the toa Phantoka/Mistika have. Colors are crucial definitions of characters in Bionicle.

Maybe if the Bara Magna storyline didn't begin so early and we would have gotten more waves from the primary setting, (and such get more Kanohi instead of Agori stuff) maybe we could have gotten used to them. Eventually, I think, Lego could have released a final Toa Mata/Nuva wave with very Mata-looking masks and colors.

Eh, it's okay. The proportions make her seem somewhat adolescent. I can tell you don't like the football shoulders on the original but I think you should figure out a way to widen them slightly.

I think you also need a better tittyplate. The lego wedge is too smooth and solid relative to the rest of the design and sticks out.

Shapeways is just too expensive to use, especially in their ridiculous shipping rates. Plus it's just too much work trying to make 3D printed plastic look good, and the vast majority of time parts are never designed with the sanding required to smooth surfaces.

By "type" mostly. I think I used to have stuff separated by color like some sort of retard earlier in my life, but when we were last moving places and I had to store all my shit I shoved all my parts into big ziplocs separated into limbs, ball socket parts, armor, weapons, and torso/head parts. Everything else (ie technic bits) I sorted into a bunch of smaller bags so I didn't have to dig through a thousand pins and axles trying to find anything. Simple shit really.

yeah, my sorting is pretty much the same, but I got so much lately that I had to separate "most common limbs", ccbs ones, and two-ball-joint-sockets, same goes for armors and weapons. Also I recommend putting feet, masks, launchers and heads in different categories too.

Most of it is in bags grouped by arbitrary categories, but that's not working too well for me since half of the time I'm not sure in what category exactly I put the part I'm looking for and it devolves into dumb searching. So I tried moving just the black parts to organizer boxes so that each slot has only one or very few kinds of parts, which did actually make finding anything black super efficient, but I fear I'd need an unrealistic number of boxes to extend this system to all other colors as well.

Why did Lego never release more Mahritoran?
Its the best Matoran build, period.
And they don't even look mutated.
I know most of you guys will hate me for it, but in my opinion, the 2001/2002 and Voya Nui Matoran look like retarded midgets. Sure, the builds are "cute" but the Mahritoran are the best mix of everything.

Know what, I don't think you're wrong. I'm more partial to the Metro build for it's apparent "bulk" compared to the early builds, but the Mahri design carries a lot more to make it feel complete.
Maybe I'll try reworking the Metru build though, I'm curious if it can be improved upon.

I party agree, for me the Metru build is a good second.
In my mind the Metrutoran the purest form of a Matoran, but I just love the mutated aspect of the Mahritoran, its kinda H.P. Lovecraft-y.

I wish there were some good simple hands that you could attach to the end of those arms. I like Mahritorans too but their shoulder sockets are extremely limiting and nothing really works for them except those arms, but then you're limited further by hand attachments that fit on them.

why is this mask so hard to work with. The mocs I make with it either look like lanklets or manlets and too bulky or too skinny. The chin part is too big so it's difficult to give it enough space to move and ends up too forward like hunchback or with a huge gap between the chest and the chin. I like the design (cry) but it's fucking hard I'm not sure if it's worth it any more.
I had a great weapon design and torso but I scrapped the latter and the limbs so many times today that I've burned out and lost my will to moc

Yes. Like that strange Piraka foot piece on Hydraxon's boxart that even ended up in the comics. The Hordika also have an extra hip joint on their CG renders for better posing. Some of the Barraki promos were also infamous for showing non-finalized models.

Just got this lot from ebay and I am pretty damn satisfied. Most of it is very incomplete, but for someone that doesn't really have any 2001 and 2002 stuff and is just now trying to catch up on that stuff now, being able to get started on a bunch of big sets all at once is pretty great. The Muaka and Kane-Rain particular was the set I was most interested in getting before I stumbled on this thing and it looks like they are basically complete except for their hindquarters and one of the Kane-Ra's legs, so I'm pretty happy about that.

I can already tell putting the Bahrag together is gonna get costly though, if for no other reason than that from what I can tell the parts I got only have like 3 of the white half-axle/pins. Curse 2002 and its short-lived pin and axle colors.

As in, for example, piting a squad of space marines against a Toa team rather than piting the entire Adeptus Astartes against all the Toa (specially considering how few of them are left). Because I feel that at least in terms of raw power they are quite matched unlike almost any setting where 40k gets the upper hand in both power and numbers

Single Space Marine vs. something is pretty much the go to W40K comparison. Maybe single Ork. A skilled Toa or something with a BS enough kanohi power could totally hold their own against some W40K bruisers.

And yeah, on an individual basis W40K is fun to compare to other series but when it comes to universe vs. universe W40K just shits all over everything no contest. The whole point of that franchise is just universe scale warfare with intentionally comical powerlevels slapping each other around.

All Kanohi, including the vahi, seem to work in Mata-Nui which is outside the GSR, and the Ignika worked perfectly in Bara Magna (see Metus) it just can't use its most OP ability mainly because it wouldn't make sense to do so outside of the robot.

A few have actually had your same idea, google Helryx MOC. It actually suits the character (the eyescope doesn't make much sense, but eh), but I personally have other plans for that mask. And most importantly I still think of crunchbitenuva's version as the definitive Mask of Psychometry.

Random shower thought: if a destined matoran's form as a toa resembles what their "idea" of a toa should look like, and the voya matorans were tricked into thinking the piraka were toas, then wouldn't a voya matoran that was transformed into a toa during that specific time frame end up with a toa form that resembles a Piraka?

It would be pretty interesting to try and build a team of voya nui toa that partially resemble the piraka in appearance, like with big spines and all having two-form weapons.

I think discounting the Inika for that discussion is entirely reasonable, since the way in which they became Toa is so unusual and they are already very non-standard Toa in so many ways.

One could also say it's half implied in the story that the "Toa form is based on what the Matoran thinks it would be" thing didn't apply to this group since Hewkii was kind of upset about how even his color changed, so that's at least one element of the design that came entirely out of left field for them, and that he had no reason to think a Toa of stone would look like. On one hand I'm pretty dismayed my project partly crashed and burned since I really wanted to build a good modular Toa/humanoid torso. What I want to do with MOCing right now is recreating and developing that synergy between G1/Technic and CCBS that G2 was heading towards before its cancellation.

Using a torso made of prefab parts feels like a step back on that path, but it is a lot more flexible than I initially thought, especially the torso piece itself. The height and (shoulder) width are super easy to adjust it has a ton of connection points, and you can easily mount a G2 head and even a Mata head.
Never thought I'd be here shilling for the Metru torso of all things but hey here I am.

Mind you I still hate straight up Metru mods, because I look at them and cringe at the floppy baby arms, but I'll concede that its proportions are good, and it has the charm of feeling like a step in between the Mata and Inika build.

I prefer thinking of them as the intended final evolution of a Toa, when they master their elemental power to the point they fulfill their potential and reach their "complete" selves. Like Bankai in Bleach. That probably doesn't work well with the whole Turaga and destiny thing, however.

That said, I think the timing in canon made it feel as if the transformation was like a prize for defeating the Bahrag, so as convenient as it was it still felt they had earned it. That's how I felt about it as a kid.

Speaking of getting guys in parts, been putting these together for the first time. Some manner of childhood goals being achieved at long last. Also nice to confirm after suspecting it all these years that Pohatu is indeed the best one.

Though you know, I knew exactly what I was getting into, but the limited articulation and gears are still proving more frustrating than expected. Getting anything close to dynamic poses out of them is a bit of a challenge. Still, I love how they look, especially together.

Nuva actually came with spare axle and gear so that you could lock the arms in static poses. Kinda kills the purpose of having the gear function, but it's a neat alternative

My problem with the Nuva transformation (aside from the oversize masks) is that even though they are supposed to be Super Toas, I never got a good sense out of that.
Immediately after their transformation, they job to the Bohrok-Kal (they had their elemental powers stolen, but still not a good debut), for the most part the Rahkshis are trashing them and they get the ever-living shit kicked out of them by the Piraka.
It's not until 2008 that I get to see how truly powerful they are, and even there the Makutas are holding back.

Yeah early toy articulation woes. I've been thinking of buying a bunch of bar pieces to replace the axles with because apparently that works to add a little more articulation for them, since that lets you move around the ball sockets that are otherwise locked in place. If you adjust the extra gear's position on the axle to be just barely touching the big gear, you can still move the arms and the gears will start clicking against each other as they turn, functioning as a ratcheted join. I figured that out when I was like 7 lol.

I'd really like to figure out something simple like that for the toa metrus. It would be really nice to get the arms locked in place without removing the function or having a giant rig tacked onto their back.

You can thank the usual "escalating power levels to market the newest toys" shtick that just about all toy franchises have to conform to. They only turned Nuva at the end of the 02 arc, leaving them nothing to fight against, and were followed by two waves of bad guys and a brand spanking new super good guy, all of whom had to be made to look cool by leaving the Nuva in the dust. Then they fell out of the spotlight entirely for several years.
Honestly this is one reason I actually like the Kal arc. Even if they jobbed for most of it, the Nuva still won at the end and they discovered the Bahrag (who would be more useful later), and at least they had something to do before Takanuva literally outshone them. And that aside, at lest they scored some smaller victories here and there, like when Kopaka beat three Rahkshi by himself or the big standoff against all Rahkshi later.
I wish the power levels were more even though. Like what if they fought the Piraka to a standstill, only to be beaten by some completely unexpected event, maybe the volcano erupting or Brutaka showing up. The story structure would remain the same without making the Nuva look bad.

Though to be fair the instructions claim the batteries aren't meant to be replaceable so I dunno.
