In terms of sculpt work, paint, and accessories they wipe the floor with MLs, but not really in terms of poseability. I think the articulation set ups of those two lines represent the very best of articulation for retail figures in their time.
The only other line I can think of for that time that at all competes were these WWF Finishing Moves figures. Interesting as they were though and as well as they could move, these things had some fugly sculpts. I also think they lacked ankle rockers and I don't recall any butterfly joints on them but don't quote me on that.
