I sold 6 game of thrones funko pops for for 500 dollars when the last season was airing, helped me buy a new iPad Pro. Bought them when I was in college and they were only 10 bucks each. People pay stupid money for that stuff. I’ve moved onto mostly Figma and Legends now

It's a $6 MSRP, but since its a blind box figure, only found in the Hot Topic stores, and is probably a 1/36 or 1/72 rarity, it adds up. I spent over $100 on a Mystery Mini at least twice because its the only way to get it. Its overpriced, but you are at the mercy of scalpers past a certain point. I won't justify the price, but I was willing to spend a certain amount to get that piece in my collection and had to give in. There is one infamous one from the Walking Dead line that still goes for $300 to $400 online.

People spend that much to either complete their collection and/or they really want the figure itself. For example: This little dude cost me ~$130 in the aftermarket due to its rarity. I mostly got it to 100% my collection even though I understand people wondering why I'd pay that much though (and I too understand I probably have more money than brains in justifying said purchases like this). You see pieces like this outside of Funko too though. Some collectors items will even go into the thousands range.

The culture now is vastly different than at the time of beanie babies. How popular and easy to access the internet is now plus a general normalization of geek culture means the funko reach is much stronger. Plus a pop culture character is always going to be more popular than some generic soft toy.

The first figmas that I bought were the Black Rock Shooter and K-On Figmas. They were like $30 a piece and came with a ton of accessories. I remember being blown away by the quality. Shit, I got all of the Madoka Magika cast for $140 shipped from Mandarake. Now that'd buy me two figmas with fewer accessories between them than a single OG figma would have had.

Exactly, 11-14 was their peak for sure. Top notch quality and fantastic character choices (bless them for Kaiji). It all started going downhill with the introduction of FigFix, a typical statue line but it was covering characters who already had figmas and their faces were swappable with them, so if you wanted the FigFix exclusive face for your figma you had to buy the statue. Haven't heard of that line for a while and don't know how long it survived but it was the point of major changes starting within Max Factory.
