In the past I used to collect a variety of toylines such as Transformers, but I found myself gravitating more and more towards LEGO as even very minor QC errors would irritate me and ruin my enjoyment of the toy. To give an example of the extent of this, I would be annoyed if one leg on an action figure is slightly looser than the other, as I needed both to be at the same, exact level of tightness. It would seem that only LEGO, with its high quality standards, would be able to give me peace.

However, in recent times I have begun to realise that even LEGO would not be able to meet my impossibly high standards. This would probably be more common in the Collectible Minifigures line, where the lower level of quality is more apparent (e.g. loose limbs, slightly cheaper feeling plastic). But even in most general lines, I started to obsess over trivial things such as whether the glossy sheen of the surface of the bricks would have any scratches whatsoever.

It started to drive me insane to consider these things and my enjoyment of even LEGO was severely affected. And if LEGO could not meet these standards, who would? The only two options seemed to be to quit toys forever, or to make peace with the imperfections.

I decided to go for the latter, and I have been trying to accept that toys serve really to entertain; I should not treat them as idols to be put on the perfection pedestal. As indeed, no material object can be truly flawless in this world. It has not been easy, but I am trying to keep up with it (in fact, an Elves minidoll I got recently had a green smudge on her arm, and it annoyed me at first, but now I'm okay!). Perhaps eventually I will get enough peace and freedom to return to those other lines that are of less quality than LEGO and really be able to find enjoyment in toys in an appropriately detached manner.

These are something you absolutely can't get rid off, unless they start packing every part in its own bag. They start rattling together the moment they come out of the mold

Ghost trains are always good.

But that ghost train was too ghost and not enough train.

I still maintain that the Pacific is the superior style of train for ghost trains. Less spooky than the oldest of steam engines, but far more intimidating.

About half the sets have the late 1800’s look for the human vehicles.

Its all ugly and unappealing, but the anachronistic hodgepodge machines really make it that much worse.

I can't agree. Victorian era was the best.
And anachronistic doesn't mean bad. Most of Lego original themes were like that. Ninjago is like that and it sells like hot cakes.

I say this as someone who regularly buys BNIB Lego from the 80s onwards; Lego print quality has always been horrific. Sure there are some decent figures, but misaligned prints, printing on white, etc are so common. Its less justifiable today with modern technology, but anons here seem to think Lego printing has gone down with time.

And? Maybe they don't want to produce that hat mold again. An updated JT will and has all those modern prints,it looks like Johnny Thunder to me and it is him. The gun is missing but that's not bad. Anon those figs were from a completely different line. Those monsters were in Studios, there was nothing steampunk about them. Monster Fighters did have aspects of that with the heroes though, I'll give you that much.

I honestly don't understand why the drop in quality was so sudden and high. I have a lot of 80s and 90s sets and cannot for the life of me understand why the printing on those can look nice and sharp and printing on modern figures looks so bad.
I've had figures where you can actually see the "pixels" where they've been printed. Compare it to a torso from the 90s which just looks right.

And let's not forget the printing of faces. Why can't it look sharp? Why does it look blurry?

I want to get more CS Astronauts from Benny's Space Squad sets but I'm getting tired of having to order replacement heads just to be able to use them.

My buddies all think my Lego hobby is cool with the creativity I display, and my gf finds it endearing (and sometimes acts as an enabler). I was actually nervous when I first started dating her because I had a few Lego sets in my room at college, but she was more than cool with it because I didn't treat it like a big deal either. I've seen here that many speculate the Lego theme coded as "Leaf" is a CCBS theme but it isn't. A trusted source of mine told me that the theme is actually a space theme. But it's not the way you'd expect it,this theme is more like a Men in Black kind of theme with alien invaders trying to conquer Earth and MIB guys stop them,there is quite a variety of new alien molds and we see the Grey alien head re-used in this theme with a new print.Other than that most aliens are original and it feels like space police 4 but on earth. The theme is called Stellar Aliens and it seems to have the aliens as protagonists(even that they are the bad guys) though there is one or two aliens seen with the humans so they might be good. I was also told that this theme has a Hidden Side tie in as part of Lego's new idea of "connecting" different Lego worlds better than they did in the past. The first wave will have lots of buildings,earth defenders vehicles MIB style and alien spaceships which could be "disguised". I'll bring more info later this week when it's available to me.

Nostalgia goggles. 70s and 80s Lego had plenty of blurry and shitty prints. Plus the printing ink they used for the early years had a tendency to dilute and mix, meaning that Castle minifigs could get chest emblems that were just a mush of run-together colors after a few years.

It's always been like this, you just never noticed before.

On the top you have old heads - on the bottom you have new heads from Benny's Space Squad.

I can clearly see a difference when looking at them in both this picture and under direct observation.
The bottom heads look "smudged" while the top ones seem "crisp".

The middle one appears to be a slight misprint, I'll give you that, but other than that, I don't see much difference, other than the shape of the mouth, and that has nothing to do with quality of the printing.

This photo I'd argue is worse, even though all the heads are technically in focus, it's still slightly blurred, even on the older heads.

I think you're mistaking this "blurryness" for a different shape of the mouth and eye placement.

The double pin the "tread" is connected to has an axle hole in the middle. And while there's axles with pegs at the end, they're all 3+ long. Pins can't actually go all the way into a 1x1, so based on the angle they might be using a 2 length axle.

The schoolbus and little buggy look more like the plethora of ghost weapons 2016 had, unlike the original which had one basic weapon. Also, “capturing” the ghosts by just shooting them until they disappear.

Not enough people got it in the first place.

The best way to market Overwatch would have been blind bags for the heroes, and three $30 sets with the level objectives for scenes.
Then being clever and making the City and Hidden Side stuff following it being easily repurposed as Overwatch levels.

Use the characters to sell other themes. Getting an entire OW character collection wasn’t going to be worth a $90 rocket.

They've been using it at least since 1990. The M-tron Particle Ionizer uses it in the 'rotor' section. The "Brick, Modified 1 x 1 with Studs on 4 Sides" actually has enough room inside to accomodate a pin, because of the tiny holes in the studs on the sides.

I would say Blizzard was retarded with this shit as it always is with its toys. They always make some trashy first wave that's either totally disconected with the target audience or release ot at wrong time when the hype is already gone. With Neca, they wasted their time on making some random warcraft meme quest character instead of something iconic like Artanis or Diablo. And with Mega Bloks they on some fugly literary who figures and settings instead of again making recognizable stuff like the main characters. Mega Bloks have a system for their characters and their concept for the WoW sets was "every character's armor and weapon is compatible with everyone else". Thus they made all the figures male since they couldn't figure out how to do female looking figures with removable armor during the whole range of their line, and why they made their gnomes huge. All for that compatibility.

The random characters were supposed to be your WoW character so you could customize your favorite appearance with swapping armor and weapons. Unfortunately that meant sacrificing everything else.

They did do some of the "big" canon characters though only ones that fit the removable/switchable armor theme, such as Varian and Arthas.

Yeah but WoW is quite an exception when it comes to fantasy. The magic there is as colorful and interesting looking as possible, same goes for creatures and even WoW has technology, gyrocopters, gnome mechs etc. Translating that all to Lego sets would not only be easy, but the sets would look very interesting, especially since a heavy basis could be put on buildings and various creatures.

Hello LG!
I'd like to ask you guys for some help and some advice.
I've just bought the Lego 6081 off bricklink and it should be with me in a few days. The only issue is - as the guy in the video is about to point out is that the left side of the castle doesn't look exactly great.

The video I linked is what a guy did to extend it - and he did a stellar job as far as I'm concerned. Normally I'd just go his route but the issue is that baseplate he used is expensive - almost as expensive as another castle.

So I'm in a bind - I want to improve on that left side but I need to do something else. Quite at a loss about what to do - so here I am asking you guys for input and suggestions. How would you add to that castle? What affordable baseplate would you go for to add next to it? Or would you go about it a different way?

My budget for an "add-on" is about 40 USD for a bricklink order with parts specifically for that purpose.

Please, if you have a good idea, leave a reply.

I will only say Elves because Lego fantasy stuff is so rare and City does a lot of stuff that Friends does, but Friends overall has better sets. I mean no surprise given that Friends has been rolling along for 10 years now and elves just did their mandatory 3 years.

It's a nice little armybuilder pack if you wanted some Sky Police or some jailhouse cons. Crook comes with striped printing on the legs, which is very nice.

Also comes with one of the new neck brackets with four studs on the back, and as you can see it looks quite nice. This is the cheapest set it comes in; the next-cheapest is $20 so if you wanted one and didn't want to wait for your next B&P order, here you go.

Pretty much what was said there. Bionicle is a completely different beast compared to the rest of Lego's themes, it's a black sheep for how story-focused it is and how the fans continue to stick to that beyond just the sets.
Friends hardly has much of a stigma around it anymore, if it ever really did. Separate generals for Lego themes makes sense to an extent, but most of them don't have enough to discuss to do that. Maybe it Lego had it's own board and it could be filled with unique theme threads, but on /toy/ it just ends up clogging things and probably irritates non-Lego fans.

If you haven't used either, Stud.io is way better, it has more parts and it's overall more versatile. If you find it complicated to use as a beginner, LDD is fine too, you can also start modeling in LDD and then import the build into Stud.io and keep going there.

I changed the color of the bumper to white and buila more sturdy roof. The previous version was kind of flimsy when holding the vehicle from the top.

stud connections are fine and have been a thing for years (like in Elves for crystals or the General Grievous statue and probably a ton more), probably because the actual area of contact isn't that big. It's a big problem with bars pushed through cones though

Do you guys think this means I should get the old AT-ST and Y-Wing now before they get expensive since it will take a long while for them to get remade in the Original Trilogy version? The new AT-ST is also dark bluish gray so you can't just buy it and replace the new parts.

Kinda disappointed in the mandalorian's gun. Doesn't do the art justice. I don't care for Ben Kenobi's new hood. I like that they finally figured out how to remove the gaps from the panels on the falcon. I like the desert variant of a snowmobile. Overall these sets look fine and the builds are nice at first glance. But I'm not even entertaining the thought of them having a good MSRP. I'll probably bricklink some of the aliens so I can insert them into my planned Mos Eisley MOC. Maybe some of the Knights of Ren and the red bounty hunter lady piloting that y wing.

The A wing looks okay. But why are they releasing another? Lego needs to make more Star Wars Structures. I'm getting sick of them re releasing walkers and space ships. Like I get that the Falcon needs to rerelease every other year because people buy it but why do we need another a wing and y wing? Give me a good looking structure.

The A-Wing and Y-Wing sets are respectively titled "Resistance A-Wing" and "Resistance Y-Wing". So for Lego it's a movie tie in set. What we should be asking is "Disney, why the fuck do you use recolored versions of the same fucking starfighters from 30 years ago in your latest movie? Come up with some goddamn new designs". If I were benevolent, I guess I could argue though that they don't want to reveal the new ships yet, so we get the recolors in the first wave. The pessimist in me would wager though that there aren't new ships and this actually is the resistance fighter fleet in ep9 in some misguided attempt at nostalgia bait by JJ.

Well yeah. But lets take solo for example. They could have had that opening interrogation with that giant worm alien thing. They could have made a mud trooper focused set that didn't have a tie fighter. In fact that would have made more sense. Like a scene with Han "vs" Chewbacca pit and you knock down a support beam and the two mud troopers above fall down into a pit. Boom play features. Mud troopers. The works Instead it was another TIE fighter. We could have gotten some Kessel mines. We could have had bad guy's office where that showdown is. We never even got the main bad guy from solo. Those would have been interesting sets. We got a bunch of space ships.

Don't get me wrong. I adore space ships, walkers and speeders and I get why they are the focus but Lego isn't making anything else from the movies and its irritating. I'm not even asking for anything complicated. With the same number of parts you can make an interesting scene.

I'm with you, I'd fucking love new designs and new set pieces in lego form. To be fair, they did some scenery sets for TFA (Encounter on Jakku, Battle on Tadokana, Rathar Escape) and at least one for Rogue One, but frankly, I didn't really want them. I thought they sucked, because the scenes weren't all that memorable. I think the problem is, Disney would first have to make movies with scenes that are so outstanding that you want it as a diorama. I can see why they wouldn't do something for Solo: A Money Sinking Story. I love the little set pieces they do for the original trilogy, because those scenes stand out to me, even after all those years.
