Something about the lack of rigid lines and more mechanical details in Demi's art is a little bit weird, considering how full of pistons and hydraulics the original sets were.

I prefered his older pieces where he would either give them some clothing or at the very least, some armor. All his current shit is just the musculature with no accessories/armor/anything on top of the base body so they just look nude and plain.

Everything has loads of ideas going into it and time is limited. Not everything can stick. That concept art is labeled 2015, plans change.

If their main idea was going with Takanuva or just something early G1 in general there's also the thing that it's kinda dubious if all the part molds still existed for them to use. None of those parts have been really used in something like a decade at this point, with the torso going on over 15 years now. The cost of remaking (or whatever it would have entailed to make them) for what would likely have been pretty limited use probably also was a factor.

Resolve the Vahi subplot! Where did the second half come from? How does it tie G1 and G2? Will complete Vahi be able to do more than the sum of its parts?
The possibilities are huge, like the villain of the wave using True Vahi to summon Dark Mirror versions of G2 Toa, or G1 and G2 timelines partially merging, bringing along beloved past characters. And G2's third year will conclude with Lhii and Tiribomba saving everyone atop a tamed Manas.

My personal favourite take on cross-timeline Vahi shenanigans would have been using it to bring back the Toa's mask powers from G1 (by synchronizing with their alternate selves or some gibberish like that). Gives them an upgrade for the final year, solves the issue of boring elemental masks, and establishes a clear connection between universes without actually making knowledge of G1 required to follow G2.

I actually liked the last wave of sets more than anything HF did up to that point. I'm a slut for anything Kaiju related, CCBS Mecha were surprisingly effective, and minifigs themselves weren't half bad. Shame that the storyline sucked more than usual.
That said, Breakout arc almost came close to Bionicle levels of hype back in the day. The whole gang was there, and we got some great villain ideas, like Core Hunter and Speeda Demon.

2016 ends with the Toa being dragged into the Shadow Realm and Makuta becoming free at last, preparing his forces for an assault against the rest of Okoto. First half of 2017 would be about exiting the Shadow Realms while learning more about the past of Okoto as well as knowledge to save the Island, maybe have something like the stone prophecies just telling of a future confrontation with Makuta but not what happens or not even how to defeat him.

Like others said, it was the combined profits of Bionicle, licensed themes (Star Wars and Harry Potter) and the early-2000s revamp of classic City that saved them. But when they had no licenses to rely on in 2003, it was only through Bionicle that they had pulled through as a company.
But it's also a fact that not just many old school System fans but Lego corporate higher-ups as well disliked Bionicle because it was too different, too story-driven, too dark, and a host of other reasons. I don't put too much stock in the idea that Lego deliberately canned Bionicle because they hated it, but I'm sure its extremely unpopular status among collectors and parts of the Lego staff must have been a factor in how badly handled and ignored it's been, outside of the recent Bonkle references in System sets that probably came from workers who liked the line.

In the book that excerpt is from, they single out the krana in specific and how they resemble facehuggers. They felt it was too close to the horror genre. And outside of Lego, German cartoon distributors also had issues with the Miramax movies and almost didn't release them. They ended up cutting a whole bunch of scenes to make them more kid friendly.
Which sounds strange, considering the stuff Lego let the story team get away with beginning with 2005. Even Greg said he was surprised many times with how dark or edgy the story got, and he feels the first 2006 book went overboard with its tone.

Imo, Tahu was great (okay his eyeholes were a little small looking back at it now), Kopaka, Gali, and Pohatu were good, and Lewa and Onua were the only ones whose masks could have used some work t.bh desu. Lewa looked a bit like a clown with the three vents resembling those three tufts of hair, and similarly, Onua's mask was also oddly shaped with too great of a slant into the upper and lower portions of the mask. Honestly? No idea. But it seems to have been fully retired, since before 2019 CCBS was widely used for, say, small mecha limbs in System sets, but I scowered this year's sets, and only found bits and pieces of Technic.
So that means that they either concentrate on System and pure Technic completely from this point on, or that they have plans for a new system. I want to hope for the latter, because we didn't even have a proper legacy line unlike Ninjago, which makes me super salty. And no, Stars only barely count as a legacy line.

They really didn't seem like they were. I never got any, but I'm pretty sure they also started using gearboxes and stuff from the second wave on, the weapons always looked more complicated and stuff like that black robot from Rogue One had some interesting stuff going on. Depends wether the Toa have a winter or a summer wave or no wave at all like in 2003. One possible route could be to borrow some iconic enemy from G1 like Bohrok or Rahkshi for this final year and remake them. If the Toa get to have a last wave the Rahkshi get scrapped as canister sets and it becomes an Umarak the hunter sized set that would act in the story as some sort of lieutenant or bodyguard of Makuta, basically an elite minion.
Small sets could be small creatures of the shadows or shadowspawns that would likely have some kind of gimmick with the canister sized sets or instructions for a couple of minikaitas that could be pit against two hypothetical elemental creature kaitas during the, still ongoing, assault that was shown in JtO.
In terms of Titans would obviously have Makuta and maybe make him unbury and bring back Kulta in the story only to have the Skull Grinder fused with LoSS into some kind of mindless abomination with spider legs because of Makuta's disappointment (could be called Skull Centaur or Skull Crawler) to help him in battle or, in case the Vahi becomes a very important object for Makuta, to search for the Vahi like a G2 version of Voporak.
Truth is I never stopped myself to think too much about it which is why the set ideas ,specially canister sets, might not sound that interesting.

Inika builds weren't invented yet so they still got real creative coming up with technic torso builds. Plus for 2005 in particular they made sure to give them all unique stuff for their arms.

Early titans put all the focus on having weird and unique torso constructions while the later ones were pretty much all about coming up with weird leg designs. because 9 times out of 10 they were just gonna be inika torsos with regular arms.

Funny that you say this as a good thing considering he has also made several drawings and 3D models using Miramax style, including Nikila's design. Even the articulations of the Toa in that short have that same muscle looking tissue.

Gotta admit that said style was a bit hit or miss in some instances.
It made Rahkshi and Visorak more threatening and horrifying and managed to pull off Krekka's weird head.
However it made the Vahki look underwhelming compared to their sets (also made them robomanlets for some reason) and although I like Makuta's design it's true that the toy Kraahkan has something that makes it more sinister specially when looking at it on the front but I can see why they didn't go with that.
Not to mention how apparently ash bears and mutated Muaka are virtually idistinguishable except for the fact that one of those has sabertooth fangs.

I don't know whether this is accurate, but I think I read somewhere that the movies changed their design philosophy by the 3rd one, that's why most of the characters look more toylike than in the previous two. I mean sure, they still had major changes like the one-armed Hordika, the Rahaga-copters, the floating crotch-plates or Keetongu's head, but they looked much more recognizable than the characters from the first two movies. The designs incorporated stuff like thin, gangly limbs, visible Lego pieces and the organic stuff was less exposed.
It's like they went overboard with the redesigns at first, then gradually realized that more toy-accurate designs would have worked just as well. One can only imagine that if this trend had continued, a hypothetical '06 movie would have probably found a better balance between the toy designs and actual workable animated characters.

The Toa (and even the Turaga Mata) in general where pretty recognizable for the most part. The main problem lies with the villains, Matoran and other characters, and even then you can still associate most of them to a set to some degree.
Also those artistic liberties sometimes make sense in lore, for example Nidhiki has the Metru brainpiece in the movie as he was a Toa before getting mutated.Not sure if this was known before the movie but there is that.

Makuta's armor was literally a bunch of Technic car parts so there is that as well

That one went too far into the other direction if anything, and most of the stuff they did change was either unnecessary or outright jarring. I mean stuff like Telluris being fused into the Skopio (granted it's only a couple of shots), the awkward Inika build proportions with the enormous 09-style hands, the spinning pins and the metal teeth-lips that made the characters revolting rather than emotive. They even kept Kiina's red pins and made the eyes less emotive than in the other movies.
At least TLR had nice textures and one thing I did like was the scratched up look and how Mata Nui was shiny because he was new. And while I hated the helmets with the retractable mouths, that detail at least made sense so we could see their faces. If only those faces weren't so ugly.

It's not that their proportions aren't human, I never said that was the problem, it's that they look ungainly and goofy. The hands for instance look okay on the sets because their fists are closed, but when they open them in the movie, their hands are massive and bigger than their heads.
I never liked the lengthy monkey arms on the Inika build in general. Again, it's not that they're not human proportions, I like the Toa Mata just fine and they're even less humanlike, because for me the Mata's alien-ness works, while the Inika and by extension most of the TLR characters just look overly lanky. For that matter, the TLR characters compound the problem by having much smaller heads.

It does. The Brick by Brick entry mostly mentions Doo Heads, while Swinnerton talks about starting from those early concepts and expanding them into what we know as Bionicle. They mainly worked at different stages of development, but both had a major role in creating it, as did others. On that note, Swinnerton's "which for legal reasons I have to say I co-created" is honestly pretty damn rude, but I can see why he'd be a bit butthurt after all the trouble with getting WIkipedia to give him any credit at all.

I like the center kite design more than anything.
And yeah, Maxilos'x articulation is pretty insane, since he has both waist and shoulder articulation in his torso. Plus, the hydraulic pieces in his body are a nice touch.

Faber had the idea of the big robot with smaller robots acting as medicine, Swinnerton came up with that robot being a crashed evacuation ship hidden in the ocean. Maybe that's not exactly how it went, but it's one possible interpretation that's consistent with both quotes.

Seriously though, he tried really fucking hard, especially to make G2 lore seem different to G1. I think that was the intent behind weirder aspects, like the undead pirates and G2 Bonks having love made canon.

And still, according to an interview he gave to a foreign fansite, he wasn't even planning to bring his A-game to the assignment. He took Bionicle as a quick job detached from the more intricate world-building he had done for Star Wars. But G2 was so underdeveloped that even low-effort Windham did wonders to it. Wonder what would've happened if he had been on board since the start, and writing lore in full swing. The toys may have been cancelled anyway, but at least the story and lore would be good.

The other day I was wearing pic related at a store and a guy with a four-year-old boy complimented me on it.
That was pretty weird to know that people who grew up with Bionicle are having kids now. Still, it's something that LEGO should pay attention to.
2015 might have been too early, but if people who loved Bonkle have kids, LEGO can get that sweet nostalgia/multigenerational marketing money.
Which is why I'm still hopeful for something around 2020/2021.

I remember a quote from Templar that they planned one for 2001. Probably back before the big internal shakeups in October of that year, when Lego decided to drop most of the Maori elements. If they had made that movie, it probably would have been similar to the Legend of Mata Nui game with the Toa dancing and possibly with no Makuta at the end.

Seems possible. MoL was first announced around late 2001 anyway, the guy at Templar might have heard of that. Or perhaps a potential earlier movie was just some idea tossed around without anything tangible ever being made for it.

Are those little protector niggas any good?

I wanna get some G2 but I'm honestly not really feeling it for any of the toa sets. The protectors on the other hand seem cute, even if all having the same mask is kind of samey. Cheaper too.

90s nostalgia has never been big in the first place, it was all about zoomers pretending to have lived the decade they were born in. Don't expect the 00s to be much more beloved, it was the decade of 9/11 and the great recession.
