Where I live, most of the lego that gets on Kijiji & Craigslists is all from scalpers or parents who go on ebay see the first price for an item and think its valuable.

Doesn't AliExress sell loose sets that come from authentic Lego factories, from original molds and the same plastic? That's what the sellers are claiming. Looking at user reviews and pictures they seem to be exactly like the real deal but for half the price, there's just no box. A few reviews say they had a piece or two missing or not match the official colors though but I dunno, for that price I'm a bit tempted to take the gamble as long as it's not a recast from crappy plastic.

That much? Hogwarts Castle by sellers with user reviews is down to like $142, while the Lego Group sells it for $400.

Stuff like this happens with plushes all the time, things can and do get unofficially produced and sold using official materials and factories. The chinks may often lie and try to sell you low quality shit but that doesn't mean you can't find good products for reasonable prices. That's why I'm asking, I'm assuming they're lying and just happen to have good enough quality to pass off as real but that's not necessarily the case given how China works.

OK, well serious talk and no memeing, Chinese knockoffs are not produced using the same equipment as genuine Lego parts.

However, the genuine Lego parts are rapidly approaching the quality level of Chinese knockoffs.

Unless its listed for a price at least 2x the retail price in the west, Chinese sellers never offer official Lego sets.
That being said, they must have reverse engineered Lego tooling after the outsource, Chinese Lego is of decent quality.

This was on sale for about $20...not crisp perfect fits but was still enjoyable to build and I grew up with Legos. Will probably flip this when i get bored of it and its huge. Wasn't disgusting nor shit quality.

I have a bunch of the "plant pieces made from plants" and there doesn't seem to be a difference in quality between them and the older versions.

A lot of people in the Lego General have suggested that the reason for declining plastic strength is because Lego switched from a dyed plastic to a clear plastic with dye pellets mixed in. This is cheaper for Lego, but it might be that the new clear plastic isn't as durable.

I don't like supercars, honestly.
I love the idea and concepts behind their technology, but in practice, they're just not worth the money -to me-.
I can get a cheap RWD frame for several hundred dollars, throw under $20k into it and have performance that rivals the supercar.
But it's 100% personal preference.
