The reason why people hate minecraft is:

1) they blocky and uncreative. you could just buy random SYSTEM stuff with BLOCKS and build minecraftey stuff if ou like "COMFY XD" sets.
The only difference you moc would have - it wont have license TRADEMARK on it.
but go on - buy a bunch of blocks for overprice because there is a "Minecraft" word written on the box.
2) Minecraft is basically pre-Fortnite game that had a bad name because a bunch of dumb kids liked it. now people hate Fortnite for the same reason.

Random system stuff is 99% dumb vehicles. Minecraft is the only theme that gives you decent base for landscape.

There's a flaw with making mocs. With most Lego themes, even some licensed ones, You can build stuff that would still fit in alright with it. If I make a cool "ninja bike" that's supposed to fit in with ninjago, it will probably fit in with ninjago. Star wars is basically just making anything that could go in a spaceship. As for Marvel and DC, the sets that aren't based off the movies usually make little to no sense. Spider man never used a giant mech with common lego mech features to fight venom. Lots of lego batman movie sets don't fit in either. Jurassic World sets are slowly becoming this also if I'm correct. Minecraft has distinct blocky basic parts. They have to look almost identical to the in game thing for it to be minecraft. If I were to go back to age 6 and still make rainbow mocs, none would really look like minecraft. The moc has to have a consistency of precise cube like shapes with similar features for it to look like minecraft.

My only grumble is that I liked the micro worlds and would like more sets in that style.

Micro worlds of other biomes or major landmarks like desert/snow/swamp biome micro worlds or an ocean micro world with a pirate ship and coral reef, or jungle/desert temples or ocean monument sets.

I like the boxes as well though!

As you say though, they are capable of being made, so I should play with one of those modelling programs some time.

A possibility for undersea scenes, attaching trans blue pieces all along the sides to give everything that annoying blue tint.
Making a ship would be interesting.
