Speaking of which, the ST setting really doesn't lend itself to the kind of background exploration the OT and PT did. Both of them gave us enough to make us want to know more about individual characters/locations/factions/etc. The ST doesn't have any of that. It's locations are boring, its extras are bland, and its politics is basically nonexistent. And rather than make any attempt to fix the mess he helped create, Abrams is just going "look, Palpatine!" and hoping that's all it takes because he's out of tricks. He went all-in on nostalgia for TFA and that gave them a huge short-term success, in the long-term the ST has suffered because of it.
