I mean just Bohrok, the regular 6 + the Kal. Once I saw the very first Rahkshi ad inside the Kal booklets the Bohrok just seemed manlets to me and I lost interest in them as enemies. The Rahkshi were just on another level.

The Bahrag and the Exo Toa are still some of the most brilliant sets, both G1 and G2.

I grew up with Bionicle. I was a little kid (third grade) when I first got the Toa Matas and the comics came in the mail. If anyone should be resistant to change in designs, it would be me. I personally really like the Mistika design for Tahu, I think it looks really cool.

Level 6 Kraata were pretty clever, and Level 7 were on par with a Toa in terms of intellect and were capable of speaking Matoran. Each of the 6 "Sons" was described having a distinct personality too, at least as breeds.

Thing is, media never really took time to potray that properly. They showed some strategy, but they still came across as a bunch of literal animals. It didn't help the concept seemed like a retread of the Bohrok (fiully organic parasitic thing piloting a fully mechanical suit of armor).

Sounds to me they were couldn't settle between "mindless sci-fi monster" (a la base Bohrok) and "intelligent villain" (a la Kal) and sort of mixed the two. I'd argue the Visorak got the same treatment.

In fact as a kid I was happy that the Toa finally fought talking, intelligent canister villains (the Kal) and I honestly expected the Rahkshi to be the same.
The Kal might've gotten a lot of shit (most of it is justified, I suppose), but they were the first and last fully intelligent, individualized, talking canister villains until the Piraka came along.

Last I checked, the Piraka were heinous criminals of the highest degree, with their leader Zaktan being the most sadistic and cruel of them.
Avak, at one point, recalls how the emerald-armored Skakdi once requested to be left alone with a Toa that seemed impervious to questioning.
After Zaktan got what he wanted, Avak checked for the Toa-
all he found was the Toa's tool and a puddle of a liquid he didn't care to identify, presumably because Zaktan had violently raped the Toa out of existence. I suppose it's fitting, then, that his Dark Hunter code-name was "The Snake."

The birds (and pretty much all other Rahi, for that matter) of the Matoran Universe were made in labs of the Brotherhood of Makuta- they don't know what fucking is, and even if they did, they still wouldn't be able to copulate. But what I find interesting is that this would mean that each Rahi was made with a purpose in mind beyond "let's fuck"
granted that purpose was probably usually just "maintain this flora/fauna so it doesn't get out of hand"

I wonder if Brutaka's mask was from some stage in the prototyping process. Kongu's looks like a halfway between that and Metru Whenua's mask, which interestingly got used on Umbra. Jaller, Nuparu, and Hahli look very hordika though.

You all know that Makuta can't fuck either, but if they did, they'd be engaging in a perpetual dick-measuring contest.
However, since none of them have dicks, they instead one-up each other by trying to creating Rahi.
Take for instance the Lohrak. The story goes that Makuta Chirox wanted to create "a flying serpent with enough exterior slime to slither through small cracks, but not enough to leave a trail."
It's possible he spent decades, if not hundreds of years trying to perfect this Rahi.
Enter Mutran, a long-time rival of Chirox, who decides to create his own Lohrak, which secretes just the right amount of slime.
The reason for most predatory Rahi existing is probably because one Makuta got pissed at another and decided that his Rahi wants to kill their Rahi, as a sort of vicarious revenge.
And of course you mustn't forget the enmity between the Nui-Rama and Nui-Kopen- allegedly, they hate each other because they share the same habitat, and by extension, the same prey. But who's to say that it's not just because their creators had throbbing figurative bio-mechanical hateboners for each other?

Pretty sure Hahli's prototype mask is just Nokama Hordika's with some tubes thrown in there. There's actually quite a few tubes on many of the designs which leads me to think that those bits were nixed as soon as they started ideating and formulating the Mahri for the following summer

Marketing and arguably character design (the huge "smiles") fucked up the perception of the Piraka. But due to the shitty way the movie was handled all people will remember is memes and all that horrendous stuff with Harley.

My problem with the Mistika isn't the designs, it's the builds. Using a reverse unarmored Piraka torso was unacceptable, especially given the plethora of armor options 2007 had introduced. Why did no 2008 Toa use Jaller Mahri's torso design? Or Nuparu's armor? Or Matoro's shoulder pads? It's as if they utterly ignored all the innovation 2007 had brought and chose the most boring, by-the-numbers designs
possible. That was truly annoys me about the 2008 Toa. The Kanohi are the least offensive thing about them.

I like the Hau Mistika, by the way. I think I would've even accepted it as a Hau if the Tahu Mistika set wasn't..whatever it was.

There was no news for months, but Faber just posted this a couple hours ago and said it's still being worked on. Looks like more confirmation that it's gonna be an environmentalist, possibly global warning themed parable. Apparently many fans failed to get that from all the other melting ice themed pics because they can't think outside the bounds of G1.

Miramax designs, I don't hate them like most seem to. They're not my "ideal" designs, but I accept them as one possible interpretation of the Bionicle world. Most of the changes/additions made sense from a production standpoint, given the characters had to be expressive enough to convey emotions or perform actions quickly and in a way a layperson can understand, since the movies weren't made just for the fans.
Weird stuff like the flying Rahaga also made sense because it made their scenes flow faster and saved up on budget. Some of the changes were at the very least interesting or creative. But some were just baffling, nonsensical and they often strayed too far from the toys. Like I said, I view them as adaptations or interpretations of the characters, the same way I consider the movies themselves to be one possible version of the story that stand on their own and don't fully align with the books or comics.
I enjoy the overall visual style and environment designs of the movies more than the character designs.

The matoran versions of the toa metru were downright precious. Jaller's voice was unforgivable though, as were most of the first film deaigns and toa in general. They tried to fit Gali/Nokama into this Disney hourglass that just didn't work right, the mouths were relatively fucked, the masks were fucked up as result, the eyes looked like they were perpetually bleeding and/or full of tomato soup: horrifying. But, having the designs be exactly like the toys would have been risky, even if we ignore articulation/expression issues; it would risk being like the new animations/ninjago/lego movie animations, overly childish, especially with how the characters would stand out from their likely non-lego environment. Ideally, using something like the style of Samurai Jack would be the way to go. Really anything Gendy would work.

It was bad. It was an even worse fetch quest than MONG2, with a single camera angle, poor scenery, railroaded "roaming" and incredibly booring combat. The entirety of the intrigue came from waiting for the equipment on your wishlist to drop, most of which was worthless since investing in your own element was always far more reliable than trying to pick the enemy's weaknesses. Even if this weren't the case, chess with just one peice isn't very fun. I neurotically aced every scenario in that old IGPX game from the Toonami website, but VNOG was a chore.

Saw the back bit off the original voodoo body, such that the front and back halves are symmetric. Add a handplate on the back (akin to how Gali has one on the front), with a straight-through voodoo ball to carry the axle, giving the gear system much more friction than before, to hold poses. The symmetry should also make the torso more useful overall.

Put Voodoo balls on the shoulders instead of handplates; arms hang off via socket. Same goes for the legs.

Adding a socket to the neck is pretty easy. No idea on the knees and elbows: might want to use the new frame parts there. Fuck putting plating overtop though.

Umarak's is the Mask of Darkness, so it likely allows him his control over shadow and the ability to hide within them. The skeleton masks are just decorative, I headcanon them as traditional burial masks or something. I think the Beasts' are literally just their faces and they're not meant to be masks at all.

Took over another large lot of technic stuff from a friend who was unloading it all. These guys I managed to complete or very nearly complete and there's a couple more guys in need of more bits in the junk drawer.Surprisingly few broken parts given the amount of stuff, but of course there was a Stars Tahu in there with half the parts broken (wtf lego). also some hero factory stuff in there

Look, I'm honestly surprised that there are actual grown-ass men who have been following Bionicle since its conception.

That said, I haven't even heard anything about these things since then and I'm just as surprised they've kept the line going. I always found something kind of cool about LEGO-branded craftable action figures, which is why I got really into the Throwbots/Slizer series, and was sad to see Bionicles completely replace them. I liked the Throwbot/Slizer sizes/designs much better (smaller, more simplified, minifig accessories fit in hands and look proportional).

Please tell me, oh ancient knowers of the... Toa? Tora? Whatever the in-universe name is for Bionicles... what became of my nigga Kopaka, the original monocle, shield, and sword guy? Did he have a personality? A story?
Alternatively, do the Throwbots/Slizer have any lore or are they completely separate?

They debuted in like 2000, 2001 right? And then ended in 2010, ignoring the reboot. If you were in preschool when the line started you'd have gone through the entire cannon before highschool. If you were 8 in 2001 the franchise would be finishing by the time you entered the workforce/college.

I'll try to impart what I know. Kopaka was basically a typical lone wolf character. Didn't play well with others, liked to do his own shit but would team up with the other Toa when needed. Cool and calculating kinda guy. His story is intertwined with the entire run of Bionicle, I'll have someone better versed explain that much.

As for Throwbots/Slizer, there wasn't much lore for that. Basically a planet subdivided into sectors where four of the robots were good, the other four were evil, and these two groups were fighting creatures in their domains for resources all while competing with each other for control of the planet. Giant meteor came in at one point and annihilated half of the planet and its inhabitants, unleashing a few new Throwbots to replace those that died, including some like Blaster that were allegedly mutant fusions of those that had died. Story doesn't go much beyond that, unfortunately.

I tell him to do a high end adult collector line of Toa Mata figures for the 20th anniversary that's just a 1:1 recreation of the original designs but with more complex details (eg working pistons on the arms) with full articulation. Acccesories, mask recolours and suvas included. Try to keep it buildable and technic-compatible but I'd put the focus on them being idealized figures of the characters.

I'd say the Toa assembling themselves on the beach with the canisters in the background would be 2001's most iconic scene. It's the one that set the tone for mixing together tech, nature and ancient warriors.
Other than that, my mind just keeps jumping to either the climax of every other year, cause normally that's when the true shit went down, or to the beginning that set up the year's conflict. And sometimes the most iconic moments aren't even that representative of their sagas. Like MN rising up is an epic scene and all, but when I think of the '08 story, what pops into my head first are boring watery swamps with blue-gray skies and dumb convoluted side plots.

Dunno about moments per se, but I think the ongoing interaction between Makuta and Matoro and Makuta's attempts to push him toward darkness were pretty interesting, although the fact that something similar had already happened in Time Trap diminished its impact a bit. And technically speaking, far as I know, the commercials are at least partially canon. The Barraki one is supposedly a visions the mask gives to Dekar, and the Mahri one is a condensed retelling of a scene from the books and comics, though it has a few non canon details.
Also, I think 07 had plenty of other scenes that could easily have become iconic, but the story got so rushed and there was such a shortage of canon visual media that a lot of these scenes didn't stick with people. Even in the comics, things go by way too fast and very few events stand out visually, cause almost the whole year took place in generic dark blue undersea backdrops. Unlike Mata or Metru Nui, where the unique locales gave every scene its own "taste".

I think the problem with 2007 wasn't that there wasn't enough stuff, rather there was TOO MUCH stuff. Right until the climax there were at least 6 parties, each having very different goals in mind:

Of course by the final battle half of these didn't matter much, but it was still quite the complicated plot. Didn't help that the comics got shorter too along with the cancellation of books. The 2007 Papercutz graphic novel had to cram in a fully new exclusive Hydraxon comic, the first 2008 comic, plus multiple previews of random other comics unrelated to Bonkle to meet the pagecount, because the 2007 comic run was so damn short and the story so rushed.
From 2004 to 2006, the writers had way more breathing space even when the plots got convoluted, because they had full length comics plus 5 books per year to work with. 2007 had too much going on, but not enough space for everything, so stuff like Karzahni, Lesovikk, much of the Matoran plot and the returning characters just got sidelined hard.
Imagine if we got a whole book dedicated to the backstories of the Barraki and to the side plot of Lesovikk and Karzahni. All would be way more memorable and the whole story wouldn't feel like a rushed mess. But that was impossible, since the book sales were going down. This just brings us back to the point of Bionicle's media being insufficiently managed and the need to put all the toys into the story being detrimental to storytelling quality.

Makuta does sort of represent destruction, but his goal within the plot isn't motivated by an aimless will to destroy; he's a conqueror, who's mad he hasn't been paid proper tribute. He's a dark thought who's angry he hasn't been thunk. Having been staved off for so long is the important part; he's not like the Bohrok, who're basically just de-construction workers.

Made it through all four Bonkle movies.

Shame Legend Reborn didn't have a sequel, the animation and design looked really nice in that one compared to the previous ones.

Shame Web of Shadows was totally pointless, it had a better story arc than the rest.

I don't think using the real designs would be much of an issue. All the animations before managed to put them in realistic environments without it looking off. At most, I think they should have made slightly more detailed versions of the set designs, perhaps with a bit more covering for some things like Metru-matorans' backs.

Basically it seems that, unless you're a Makuta, Shadow users don't occur naturally. You either tap into your "dark side (sic) willingly like Roodaka can, or your Inner Light ™ is drained and you become evil. But even then, it's not a real elemental power but a pseudo-element, you just shoot shadow blasts and don't do much else.

Because you know, Shadow is irredeemably evil (despite Greg initially insisting otherwise), so it's basically not allowed to be a proper Element.

Advice for the future: the smaller circles within the characters of the Matoran alphabet are supposed denote negative space, like the curve of letters like C, J, and U, or the openings of letters like B, H, P, and R. Characters with the circle in the center are not letters of the alphabet, but numerals. The character for O literally is just an empty circle (or hexagon if you're using the SoCon alphabet).

I felt like Hewkii made the least sense. He's a sportsball player, his only serious merit was physical prowes. But if that were required, why send a matoran? Having an engineer, an interpreter, a chronicler and some kind of commander makes sense. The latter category could be occupied by Onepu, Kongu, or Jaller, but Nuparu's clearly the best pick for engineer, and given who the chronicler is, Jaller's a better pick than Kongu, not to mention Jaller's experience being all-around more relevant (not only can he ride gukous, but he's also been involved with Takua etc). Macku, Hewkii, Onepu and maybe Kongu could have been a B team of some kind. One could be the mahri and the other the inika.

I'd suggest filling the gaps in with voya nui matoran, but one team lacks a po matoran and using Velika would... complicate things. Though Balta, a ta matoran who's used to being second in command, would be interesting on a team with Kongu and Onepu.

one of the movie designers said that animating the sets 1:1 made the background flash through all the gaps in their bodies when in motion, which was disconcerting to look at. presumably that idea led to them brainstorming how to fill in those gaps, and they decided to use muscle tissue to emphasise the 'bio' part of the characters

Toa Ignika. That's largely 'tism about how the three Legendary Masks are so uneven when I feel they ought to be balanced.
The Vahi lets you slow down or speed up time in a localised area, but if your will isn't strong enough, it'll affect you too. So there's a price for accessing that kind of power.
The Mask of Creation lets you design anything that could physically be built. I suppose the limitation is that you have to still build the thing, and gather whatever (possibly rare) material are required.

The Mask of Life can instantly kill or revive someone, can animate unliving things, can age living things, can grow or shrink living things, can transform living things into anything it wants, including a copy of another being with all of that being's memories (Dekar - Hydraxon) and creating new functioning masks from scratch without Kanoka or Protodermis (Toa Mahri), is designed with a curse so that anyone who touches it who isn't destined to suffers some random punishment, it can fly unaided, is sentient, and has a countdown function that will absorb all life from the Matoran universe.

Toa Ignika was just the icing on a massively overlayered cake. We get it, the Mask of Life is super special, but being able to revive anything with its power should have been enough to fill its role in the story and be desired by everyone, we didn't need all the extra bullshit tacked on.

I always contend that the Mask of Light is a great mask, as well as spreading peace (which counters a number of Kraata powers like Anger, Fear and Confusion) it gives you a degree of light elemental power. I just think it's redundant for a Toa of Light to wear it. Imagine if say Gali was entrusted with it instead. Double-element Toa.

Most of the serials to be honest. It was nice when they were just necessary side stories for still important characters or toys they couldn't squeeze into the main plot. Then they went off the rails fast.
As for other bullshit:

Sometimes I can't point to any one instance, since there's issues that plague the entire franchise. Like there's way too many severely OP characters. Most of them had no actual role or impact, so this one's low on my list of complaints, but some main characters like the Piraka still had too many ridiculous abilities. I'd have limited them to just elemental and vision-based powers. Would have been much better if they beat the Nuva through dirty tricks or by combining their elements, rather than just being super OP.

How the fuck did the guko force actually work? MNOG makes no sense. At least eight matoran avoided being captured by the nui rama, judging by the scenes from the flute up to their second attack. One of them was Tamaru though, who's deathly afriad of heights and clearly not a force member, to the point of some ta-matoran rando (Takua) being chosen over him as Kongu's disk thrower (to Tamaru's credit, he at least tries to fly, but can't). That's still eight, so that's still divisible by two if all the birds take two riders, but some of them are shown with one. Is Kongu's bird just fucking huge? Who's normally his second? I'd assume it was someone in the rama hive, but they're kept out of view in the kini-nui cutscene. Do the books go over them, or how any of this is organized? MNOLG2 only gives me pic related.

Well yeah, like >>7786104 pointed out, his bird is a Kahu which is the combiner model of the Nui-Jaga sets, so it's pretty large. The others were a lot smaller even in toy form. There used to be a lot of confusion about the birds around the time of the Maori incident, as their names were declared non-canon for several years. This lead to the creation of the 2003 Gukko to replace them, and it can indeed carry two Matoran as a callback to MNOG.
The books don't really go into MNOG material, cause the game was also considered non canonical for years and most other media either ignored it or only occasionally referenced it. They acknowledge the existence of the Gukko Force and leave it at that.

On the flip side I guess Kapura also has Nuhrii's former appearance. It's possible the Pakari he wore in MONG I was what distinguished Kapura on metru nui; he was shown with one in the Vakama CD. It might just be a nod to the general Pakari/Ruru confusion.

Its canon. The templar studio stuff is all canon because lego fucked up every other project for story telling during that period. Greg eventually had to relent and say its mostly canon except for his autistic hatred of romance (I understand sex being forbidden, but the romance actually GAVE depth to nothing characters, something Greg was never able to do)

It's got some non canon things like the way the Toa get the gold masks, and I think parts of the Manas fight don't align to canon entirely either. Greg also hated taxi crabs and de-canonized them for years until he relented to fan pressure. Kewa and Kahu birds were also in canon-limbo for a few years after the whole Maori thing.
The 2001 story is still a hot mess in terms of storytelling media, especially since Hapka wrote the first novel without ever taking MNOG's events into consideration. It's a shame the novel takes precedence over the game in a few areas, cause the book's the one that fits in least with other media. It also contradicts the comics, never touches on the Makoki stones, doesn't have a Makuta scene, and its entire climax was also later de-canonized.
