When I was a kid we have common toys with my older brother. He had a very strict policy about LEGO sets, whenever he saw that I compose LEGO freely as I want he got mad and bullied me to set up them back as the manuals say. So I actually didn't play with LEGO as bricks but more as action figures instead

Dad wouldn’t let me get lego cause i already had nintendo. So i would go around goodwill stores to look for lego and the workers thought i was poor and just gave em to me.

My daughter is 5 and finally getting into Lego. She got a few of the "friends" sets for her birthday which we put together and now I've bought a mixed classic box. We're having lots of fun putting things together and experimenting.

however there were several sets I didn't want to tear apart, few of my all-time favs

As a kid I never took apart my sets and duplicates of figures would be put in a tub. I'd only build things from my tub of bricks. I'm glad I done that though as I know my childhood collection is complete and I have a whole tub of mint condition figures that were rarely played with.

I was just like your brother as a kid too. With LEGO products I rarely dissassembled my sets, I always followed instructions and shit and treated them like expensive action figures. Mostly its because I have OCD, but also because I've always been somewhat uncreative and I was never satisfied when I did built something custom.

However that only happened with LEGO. My country has its own brick building toy called Mis Ladrillos. It was very limited and inferior when compared to LEGO but I still loved it. I never minded dissassembling those and I built tons of houses and buildings and stuff with it, since I had way more ML sets than LEGO sets because they were way cheaper. Tons of funs were had with those toys, my favourite was the gas station set (pic related) that could also be built into a car racing circuit. God did I love that gas station. Good times.

That sucks man. I was kind of a dick about my little cousins destroying my sets when I was younger. By my late teens I started buying my own in bulk and trading stuff with other kids my age that "outgrew" their lego. Now I have multiple chests filled with stuff and my little nephews come over and build their own mocs. Feels John Goodman.
