Johnny (also known as Joe Freeman in Germany or Sam Grant in UK) was ex Army Officer (LEGO 1998 catalogue) and official LEGO website stated that he's Australian. LEGO Club magazine added that he didn't like scoriopns because one of them once one of them used his backpack as a nest. Dr. Charles Kilroy Lightning (Articus in Germany) is Johnny's uncle (again LEGO magazine) and works in London Museum, according to Orient Expedition audio materials.
LEGO magazine stated that Baron was working for Sam Sinister (Slyboots, the one in black) during Egyptian adventure. Then Sam Sinister disappeared and Baron used his name. Later he became a lord.
LEGO.com once mentioned that Detective (Collectible Minifigures Series 5) solved the case of Sam Sinister's name. Unfortunately, it's not explained.
