Think of Rakuten like...Amazon, or eBay. It's not one unified site, it contains a bunch of individual shops and sellers. These fit here I assume being blind boxes in nature (even though a whole box gets you everything), but anyone got ideas for tracking down single figures/parts for the build a figures?

My clear valstrax is missing a wing, friend thought he had the correct wing but turns out its a double.

That and I want some magala figures, I found a bootleg on ebay and while its generally nice (looks almost the part except the missing paint on shagaru magala's horns and its flight stand is a loose fit) its not the one I wanted (I kinda regret selling the gore magala full size statue but I want the smaller version just to fit it in with the lot I have which has replaced it in terms of size and value)

Mandarake has very little, ebay is hit and miss (the shipping prices internationally is a turn off) and trying to avoid proxy shopping because that's absurd unless I want an old box of them that badly

It's the best way to get small loose items like what you're describing though. You can have the proxy consolidate the tiny stuff with other larger items from other shops so the international shipping is economical.

Remember Longcat? I remember Longcat. Screw whatever we're supposed to be talking about, I want to talk about Longcat. Memes were simpler back then, in 2006. They stood for something. And that something was nothing. Memes just were. “Longcat is long.” An undeniably true, self-reflexive statement. Water is wet, fire is hot, Longcat is long. Memes were floating signifiers without signifieds, meaningful in their meaninglessness. Nobody made memes, they just arose through spontaneous generation; Athena being birthed, fully formed, from her own skull.

Fucking Smash Mouth. But we were wrong. About the phoneme, I mean. Theuth came to us again, this time in the guise of a grinning grey cat. The cat hungered, and so did Theuth. He offered us an updated choice, and we greedily took it, oblivious to the consequences. To borrow the parlance of a contemporary meme, he baked us a pharmakon, and we eated it.

Pharmakon, φάρμαkον, the Greek word that means both “poison” and “cure,” but, because of the limitations of the English language, can only be translated one way or the other depending on the context and the translator’s whims. The simulacrum that is two steps removed from the perfection of the original by the process of — note the root of the word — mimesis. The Platonic ideal of an object is the source: the father, the sun, the ghostly whole. The corporeal manifestation of the object is one step removed from perfection. The image of the object (be it in letters or in pigments) is two steps removed. The author is inferior to the craftsman is inferior to God.

To return to our analogous issue: the image of the cheezburger cat, the copy of the picture-copy-copy, is so much closer to the original Platonic ideal than the written language that accompanies it. (“Pharmakon” can also mean “paint.” Think about it, man. Just think about it.) The image is still fake, but it’s the caption on the cat that is the downfall of the republic, the real fakeness, which is both realer and faker than whatever original it is that it represents.

Man’s worst fear is that he will hold existential falsehood within himself. And the verbal lies that he tells are a copy of this feared dishonesty in the soul. Plato goes on to elaborate: “the falsehood in words is a copy of the affection in the soul, an after-rising image of it and not an altogether unmixed falsehood.” A copy of man’s false internal copy of truth. And what word does Plato use for “copy” in this sentence? That’s effing right, μίμημα. Mīmēma. Mimesis. Meme. The meme is now not only an inferior copy, it is a deceptive copy.

But just wait, it gets better. Plato continues in the very next section of the Republic, 382 c. Sometimes, he says, the lie, the meme, is appropriate, even moral. It is not abhorrent to lie to your enemy, or to your friend in order to keep him from harm. “Does it [the lie] not then become useful to avert the evil—as a medicine?” You get one freaking guess for what Greek word is being translated as “medicine” in this passage. Ding ding goddang ding, you got it, φάρμαkον, pharmakon. The μίμημα is a φάρμαkον, the lie is a medicine/poison, the meme is a pharmakon.

But I’m sure that by now you’ve realized the (intentional) mistake in my argument that brought us to this point. I said earlier that the addition of written language to the meme flipped the pharmakon on its axis. But the pharmakon didn’t flip, it doesn’t have an axis. It was always both remedy and poison. The fact that this isn’t obvious to us from the very beginning of the discussion is the fault of, you guessed it, language. The initial lie (writing) clouds our vision and keeps us from realizing how false the second-order lie (the meme) is.

The very structure of the lying meme mirrors the structure of the written word that defines and corrupts it. Once you try to identify an “outside” in order to reveal the lie, the whole framework turns itself inside-out so that you can never escape it. The cat wants the cheezburger that exists outside the meme, but only through the meme do we become aware of the presumed existence of the cheezburger — we can’t point out the absurdity of the world of the meme without also indicting our own world. They're gonna be alright, but a little annoying. Epoch uses this stupid soft plastic (in combo with hard plastic joints) that is kind of frustrating to deal with. They will at least look cool and have an ok range of motion. God, I wish Epoch would just switch up their plastic mix, they have so many good ideas.

My big problem with this is that the Dangomushi themselves are quite oversaturated, and these new ones are what's going to be wanted. I guess in the sense of gacha machines it makes sense, people have to pull more to get what they want, but it's a pain for trying to buy them when they sell out instantly. I'm going to have to try to get in there day 1, I want 3 of those 5.

The crab is seriously insane. And those turtles coming up, amazing stuff coming from the gashapon division.

Upgraded my little gacha/shoku/etc collection with a clear display stand. Loving it so far as I can display more figures in the same small space. Slowly filling in the gaps.

Just bought the Space Dandy QT figurine on the lower left this week. Been searching for one forever and it kinda scales with the Dandy Bearbrick behind it which is a nice bonus.

Wow, this is actually surprisingly comprehensive. I'm hugely impressed, this modder really went the extra fucking mile in just about every possible way. The pinned toes and movable flaps above them are stunning. Also shocked at the amount of work to hollow out the crotch to make a set of Figma-style briefs.

This is actually one of the best efforts I've ever seen to add articulation to a static figure.

you do get what you pay for, capsule q is kaiyodo's line and it's got nice finishes with niche topics/themes but you end up paying about 300 to 400 yen per roll. cheaper 100y machines are usually out of materials that just degrade really quickly.

Well, I just opened up the green one with the axe and in the weapon bag it had the handle, so I guess I really was just unlucky and didn't get a handle. I guess I'll use that handle for the hammer, and use a ball joint as the holder for the axe head and have it as kind of a knuckle weapon. Or I could steal the handle from red, who has 2 for his spear. These are great. I'm glad I bought the white one too. Hope to see a lot more.

Yes, everything is quite tight, moves well, and holds poses. The feet use a ball joint now so those are nice and tight (as opposed to the rubbery ball peg of Daretoku). There's still the minor issue of pegs starting to slide out when you're posing them, but that's a minor thing with a quick fix. And they come with a weapon, as well as an extra ball joint for fun with all the extra peg holes they have. These are a way more complete and fun product than the Daretoku.

These skeletons are nice except for one thing: WHO THE FUCK DESIGNED THESE JOINTS. Its like they're made to break. They are designed so that they're always like...half open, with a lot of stress on the two pegs. If you try to rotate the limb at the shoulder for instance, it will often just pop the joint into two pieces.

If they could close flush like...fuck...any other goddamn joint ever, they would probably be just fine. But no, someone decided to sabotage the design just to make it look "Unique". Its so terrible that I was 100% convinced I was just doing something wrong, that I was making a mistake, until I checked the actual images on the instructions and saw they were all like that too.

Just from personal experience, the new skellie robots are a huge improvement over their previous figures. The body is not nearly as rubbery, and the foot joint works a whole lot better.

So far Its not with every joint and that extra joint included with each skeleton is enough to cover any losses, but still. The design is just terrible; I'm used to building model of all kinds, from gunpla to more obscure weird shit, and I've never seen a joint like this. Its enough to make me want to go grab a big bag of generic figma joints and try to replace these ones.

3 basically says like...a tough-feeling reproduction of the "front mask?" I'm not exactly sure what this means, I'm not a car guy. Googling front masks only brought up those car bra things. I'm GUESSING this just means the front of the car.

I asked last night, IIRC it was 6000 jpy for Sal Parcel, 8000 for EMS and 12000 for DHL

Another Malaysianon here. Technically, the flea market opens on Saturday too, but Sunday is when it gets into full swing, particularly for toys. The place has pretty much become the toy capital of Malaysia too. As a result, I actually think the ability to get rare/good stuff for cheap there, has become something of a rarity. Everyone's already gotten most of the deals.

I mean, you can easily get an entire set of Visionaries and Mask/vehicles there, no problem, but not for dirt cheap like the old days. And some uncommon stuff have become super rare since the sellers have already parted with them.

That's not to say you can't find deals though. Actually, I'd say the toy shops there have some of the best deals, hands down. Perhaps due to all of the competition.
