-Start small, the bigger the store the more maintenance, the more staff needed, the more aisles to that need surveillance, specially if it's located near or in a shitty area.
-Establish your age range and your products, I would suggest you avoid all baby/toddler toys, specially if there aren't many births around your area
-Don't start off giving large donations to charities, if they have a collection box you can do that, or if they have something you can sell for them like keychains or whatever do that, never go straight into charity while starting.
-Avoid having toys around, parents are the ones buying not kids and if your store is a playground of savage kids they will most likely leave, you can if money is available get some solid display boxes that are held down and display whatever in them
-Avoid register bs like "We got X, Y, Z YOU WANT SOME?" no one likes that
And most importantly you are opening a store to sell and make money either because you need it or you want more of it, you will get sob stories from parents and even kids and while they might be true (and quite sad sometimes) this isn't your problem.
