No, the theme got cancelled because of bad sales. They had sets planned for 2020 but they got cancelled. This could happen with hidden side too. Or atleast to the summer wave they have planned for 2020. Don't let this happen, buy Hidden Side sets.

In any case, you guys know this 2x2 round tile shooter piece? I've been curious as to whether anyone's thought about/has already modeled a minifigure-held version of it (if that's even possible), sorta like a shrunken down Kanoka Disk launcher. Idk if it's a question better suited for /pbbg/ or here, but eh, was just a random thought I had come up with spur of the moment.

I just wanna apologise for spamming the last thread and shitting it up as a result. I really was hoping it'd be busier, and not so noticeable. Lessons learned - if I do something like this again, host it elsewhere, and post a link. Thanks for enjoying it, though. Made it worthwhile, and I'll be doing it again. Bought a special bulb for colourwash lighting for the next one. Plus I'll invest in a fuckton more grey bricks and tiles. I have enough blue right now,

Maybe I'll mix it up with some Hidden Side shit next. I'll dump ending later, but now I need to lay down. I'm getting my ass kicked by flu. Have a great Day of the Dead, folks.

As a fan of Bionicle I'm happy and hope for its success. I like Constraction and Technic sure, but I find merit in representing scenes and locations from Bionicle as well. That and it's a cute diorama.

Take it with a grain of salt guys, this is from a source of mine which told me that a Lego Universal Monsters theme is discussed a lot at TLG. Lego is getting Universal on very good terms already, a Dreamworks Dragons line might come soon. If this universal monsters theme is made it will release after Hidden Side ended.

I just came in my pants. I hope this happens. Monster fighters was great and I doubt the universal sets would be better, but it'd still be pretty cool. Mummy and Frankenstein sets could be cool though. Id take a big ass castle too.

Also aren't these monsters public domain anyway? They are not Universal's property. Universal only made them famous.

I agree with the too similar notion. I would be excited for a cross over though. Something like a few sets in Hidden Side that are licensed with movie monsters.

I know Lego has made most of the generic form of the universal monsters, so if they did get them licensed, it would be as a tie in with a specific movie. Heck, Lego even made their own trademarked monsters for Monster Fighters. Like Vaympyer or something.

All the characters aside from the Creature from the Black Lagoon are public domain. What they can't do, without license, is directly copy the Universal designs. LEGO (and everyone else) usually skirts by under the 25% rule.

When I make a Lego story that's more than a couple of images I just make a dedicated thread for it and invite other people to post stories. If you did that I'd share some stories or maybe be inspired to make a new one.

Every year, the 4-H display at my county fair has a bunch of store-bought Lego sets as entrants. Typically they receive blue ribbons.

could we have a small fleshie vs yellow discussion? been wanting to do a proper lego city display/moc but cant decide on what to go for. i like yellows because there's more expressive faces but at the same time fleshies have some really great new heads and torso prints

I've always been a yellows guy, mostly because I never got into most fleshie lines.
It also just feels more "lego" to me I guess, plus I can use pieces from CMFs, city, etc.
It should be mentioned that Lego has definitely gotten a lot better at making torsos more universal the last few years though. A lot of torsos from lines like Harry Potter and Jurassic World don't have fleshie necks so you can put yellow heads on them without offending your autism.

Though it's not answering your question on custom parts, concerning official Lego elements, there is no 'minifigure-held version' of a 2x2 round tile shooter as far as I know, but there is a minifigure-held 1x1 round tile shooter, part 20105, but it kind of looks like a crossbow. There also exists part 22487, which fires part 22484, with the help of the common stud shooter trigger, though that's more reminiscent of a Zamor launcher than a Kanoka Disk launcher. Examples of these parts are pictured in the attached image, with their respective item numbers below them. Hope this helps!

The choice for yellow was never hard for me to make. I want to keep the old used and worn Legomen safe in my town. The fleshies never get played with. They are bought by adults and displayed. If they are sold as used, even from kids, they are always in much better condition. I also am ok with using flesh colored figures as elves, sickly, or just not human people.

Not to mention A] that Bionicle in-story was much more quiet and introspective, with action scenes fairly paced inbetween, B] just because theyre villages doesnt mean they couldnt have included conflict, like Rahi or whatever that year's villains were (2007 did this but it was too little too late, especially since there were random vehicles instead of villages), and C] many of Lego's most famous themes were peaceful, and are sorely missed. Adventurers, Classic Space, Castle, Racers, they ALL are still recognizable to the average person who isnt even a fan of lego, despite having a bigger emphasis on exploration instead of action.

Pic related was a bit of a nasty surprise to me. Lately I've been going through my bricks to make sure that whenever I've stored same era sets together (say, a bin of Adventure sets) said bin would only have period correct variants of this part.
Are there other similar cases?
Element 3839 has been changed once, for example. Also there's the whole thing with clips, since lego has made at least 3 variations of them over the years.

I bought a set, the tri-star voyager "complete and new" on ebay a while back, "professionally cleaned and test built" it claimed.

I know that was a lie because it arrived totally covered in shit and with a bunch of mismatched pieces that jammed up the mechanism because they were the wrong size.

The culprits were those same blue plate with clip light parts.

The big downside for that is that you lose a lot of the punch from the text because you have to keep referring back and forth between the image and the text, as opposed to breaking it up where each image has its own caption.

That's the issue with ebay. Most sets are not what they appear to be. You can get good deals and you can get bad deals.
Bricklink is a much more closed system and as far as I'm concerned I've very rarely gotten something that wasn't what I knew I was buying when using bricklink.

I'm sorry your set wasn't what you hoped for, but I think you can still clean and with a little love and care give it new life.

You can say that again.
I've bought from ebay twice and got both worlds. One, the set was listed as complete and missed a few parts, plus had a few swapped.
The other, it was the complete set as expected, and with the box which was unexpected. Going even further, there was a complete second set that was just mixed in with the parts, which should have honestly raised the price I paid for it by double.

If you add all the parts you want into a wanted list, and then buy all the parts in that wanted list, Bricklink will give you an option to let it automatically sort out the cheapest combination of stores for the parts you need. You can also tweak what it prioritizes, and manually search for, remove, and otherwise edit what stores and parts you're buying from.

This is the problem I had with that set, the mismatched parts that keep the mechanism from working correctly.

Yes. There is a little rover sled that slides in on the rails and then two of the guide fins fold down on hinges to lock it in place. The clearance is precise without tolerance. With the thick ring it won't fit.

It's not a thing you need to figure out.
The original kit includes the small rings.
The ebay seller provided a large ring and a small ring without realizing they were different.
It prevents the mechanism from working, so I had to supply an old proper small ring from my parts box. Problem solved.

I think the comfiness in those pictures mostly comes from the practical handmade terrain, soft airbrushed backdrops, dynamic and deep shot composition and realistic, creative lighting. (and simpler, more stylised builds and minifigs)

Modern set pictures are composited on fully cg or photoshop-drawn backgrounds and have flat 360° white lighting, making them look less like little worlds of toys and more like generic 'products'

That was a rumor. The real reason is that they were canceled because they got informed of the OW2 announcement. No reason to support the original game with more sets when they can re-tool them for the relaunch.

This was confirmed at Blizzcon the other day.

I think anon refers to the Overwatch 2 reveal at blizzcon.
However, the game doesn't even have a release date, so I doubt that whatever sets were planned are going to be recycled for the "new" game, I'll just assume they were simply cancelled.

Didn't make too many photos because most of the models at the exposition were basic cities and dioramas with current sets.
There was also a small parts market and a shop, where I have for the first time seen the box of cmf 19 here in Czechia. Sadly the bags were already sold out. Well seems like I will have to buy them directly from online sore without any chance of touching them up irl.

i think the boxes don't look enough like lego,i personally enjoy them but i had a chat with a klocal store owner and he mmentioned that kids seemed to just walk right past them, his opinion was that they looked too much like boardgames

My favorite is the bus, but yeah even at the lego store, i barely realized they were sets due to the art. They kinda blended into the wall for me, since my eyes are looking for pictures of the set and ignoring art and logos. If theyre being ignored because of that then i can imagine it being true.

Use natural light to tell light greys apart. Also you can try placing multiple parts next to each other to accentuate the color differences. Plates, bricks etc.
The new version of the 1x2 modified plate with arm began appearing around 2008 iirc. However they are rather easy to tell apart, fortunately. Old is 6mm and new is 5mm.

Train - unique and old-fashioned look other than steam engines and that rail-ramp piece.
I don't care about transformations or the theme as a whole. I just like this locomotive and it will go well with the rest of trains.

Builds are good and well put together. I like how in the first one he incorporated original sets into the design.

Futuron base also looks nifty, love the small secondary towers he added. I plan to make some too with those exact canopy pieces.
There's even some Blacktron 1.

I don't like the addition of unikitty and other "non- space" stuff.

Yellow was probably chosen for that minimalist look along with iconic yellow skin of minifigures. Making the hands tan would have made the thing look even more cheap than what it is (a wood-colored plastic piece that's substituting something that could have been wood).

This wouldn't have worked with accurate wooden hands at this scale due to the likelihood of wood hands cracking or breaking off, but honestly, the plastic hands kind of defeats the entire purpose of a giant wooden minifig.

I sell a bit of lego lcally but never on ebay but I think I can help you understand the dilemma. If I buy an old bin of lego for $80 bucks and I spend say 3-4 hour sorting it and end up with 200 dollars worth of merchandise and then need to spend another 1-3 hours listing and selling it I am at 4-7 hours of work for which I make 120 dollars. That's really not a lot of money and if I have to spend another hour cleaning it the time to money thing just gets worse. Selling second hand lego is not very profitable unless you get really lucky.

I agree the weird and 'differently drawn' style of faces were fun. The of those were featured in Chima/ simpsons and Adventuretime i guess. But that isn't a necessity for the memeterm SOUL imo.

LDD is a tool like any other. It can be used in a good way, or in a bad way.

Pictured: A bad way. One of the proposed models for what turned out to be the new Ideas set.

Look for the universal joints in the stands and in the tail. In real life, these are used to transmit motion. In this model, they are used to support a significant amount of weight, something they simply cannot do.

So something that may look neat in a render turns out to be a dumb and useless design. This model would literally flop over the second you built it.

For people who like lego for its bricks and using it in a 'legal' intended way it often isn't as impressive. (event though that can be a gray area too)
You can work away all kinds of impossible floating connections that would never hold up irl, you can make pieces float midair, you can use pieces that never actually existed in real life in certain colours taking away the challenge of 'working with what you got', and even some of the supposedly legal techniques don't actually work out in real life as well as you might expect them to from the digital programs.

If you want to make pretty pictures with LDD that's fine. But for people who like the physical nature of lego and the engineering and limitation that come with the medium it can feel like a cop-out.

I use stud.io a LOT now. But always for the purpose of mocking up ideas before I order parts to test them in real life.

I know that feel anon, Lego is a hell of a drug.
I don't even use all of them.
I do tend to buy stickersheets with car related prints though. Horsepower stickers are valuable for a carfag likeme. Little printed tiles that double as tiny little utensils and tv screens are also very cool.

Lego has been around for so long that printed tiles are a goldmine of the evolution and coming and going graphicdesign trends in past. I can get fully engrossed into just marveling how neat that one super simple print is on an otherwise very regular piece!

Thanks, not sure how I'd get several hundred pounds of Lego shipped but I'll try and figure it out.

Sort it into roughly 5 pound lots. As you go chuck out any obviously non-lego / broken shit. Take 2-3 decently lit photos spread out on a table, bag it.

I used Ebay on free seller weekends, charge a little more than average for shipping but don't go full gouge. Offer a bulk discount if people a few / combine shipping.

Lego didn't make them in-house so they weren't as profitable as an equivalent amount of plastic made in an official Lego factory. Also, Lego's post-1999 business philosophy is to maximize cross-compatability of pieces, so the same piece can be used in a Star Wars set and a Disney Princess set, and to pad out a set with a lot of tiny pieces to justify the price.

Making this little series actually made me realise just how much I enjoy doing stuff like this. I was worried it'd come off as little cringe/spergy, but looking at most of the images I posted, I think I managed to avoid that by making them look at least somewhat decent. The lighting certainly helps. Which I'm surprised by, given I had 1 tiny studio light, and a warm as fuck lamp on the other side of the room.

I will say, however, some of the future projects may involve WebMs. Me and a few friends are massively into VFX featuring miniatures, so I might have a go at adding moving frames to comic or what have you. Stop motion doesn't appeal, because it'll take forever and a day, but this is easily manageable, Hell, even if it's fly-by wire or some really crude mo-con work, I think it's something we can manage.

I'm gonna stick with the classic space men for now. Good, neutral, and pretty kino characters. They can be utilised in most things, and I don't need to worry about face glare if they're using helmets. Plus they can be mixed with other themes, so M-Tron (Which I do have a figure for) and some of the classic Alien sets. The LEGO 6979 Interstellar Starfighter is one I've got something of an interest in. I actually bought an expensive colour changing bulb that does make the Trans-green parts Fluoresce. What this means if I can now colour wash, which is what I was whining about in the last thread.

tl;dr - Expect some Classic Space OC, and theme mixing. Even if it is some gay fly-by-wire dog fighting with aliens.

It does. I was only using a phone for the job, a Blackberry Keyone for you /g/remlins. I was using that technique a lot for the white spacemen, which is why some of the lighting involving them was a little inconsistent, but the camera setting were really useful. That picture is, too. I'd have likely figured it out eventually, but you saved me a lot of experimenting with that, so thank you very much. The bulb I have is an LED colour changing one putting out about 100w, but the UV bulb itself is probably a good shout in and of itself. Never seen one in the wild, but I'll order one once my car passes inspection.

I'm also hoping to order the UCS Falcon once that's done too. Please don't glass me, folks. I really like those sets, and I get very ticked off about scales. I'm willing to admit my sins.

I'm hoarding more blue and grey, too. Also, it totally slipped my mind, but I also realised white is a colour used a lot in classic space, too. A bit of Yellow and black as well, which is something I was hesitent to use. I do want to build at least one large classic space style ship. I find a lot of the Classic Space MOC ships tend to over complicate them somewhat - which is fine, it's their MOC, but Classic Space was always rather simple. So I want to go for something complex, but looks simple. Plus it's an excuse to build a station with a detaching lander section that I can film using Peter Wragg style VFX.

They kinda limit what you do in a way. Which can be helpful sometimes when you have limited bricks or need a starting point.
Recently though, I've been thinking that terrain should be non-brick-built, while everything manmade is made out of bricks. Kinda like various dioramas they used to make for magazine ads.
But making scaled terrain is a whole other level of autism and mess. So this thought is going to get posted here and forgotten for the time being.

yes, there have been a few ones over the years, mostly smallish sets (like 10-20$) depicting the animal for the new year.
Last year they made three sets with a ton of effort and new pieces put into them and demand was so high that they made two available worldwide and said they will continue with that

LDD is as you said a tool.
For me it's useful to convert builds I see into a parts list and then order the parts out. Sometimes I get help with this since I'm bad at LDD.
The idea is that if you see a model you want to replicate it'll be pretty expensive to just order out what you think might go in there and then just try to make it.
It's less expensive to get a working LDD format, get a parts list, order those.

Other than that you can use LDD to build when away from your bricks and of course to share models with others.
Tough luck recreating someone's MOC if they don't have an LDD file. Some might take it apart to take pictures for you, but not everyone might be so accommodating.

LDD has its place.
Sure, some people use it to make over the top things that can never be made out of real parts - but why would that be a problem?

Your pictures are boring, and more so because you only have a few and you repost them almost every thread.

Posing yellow figs in lewd positions isn't entertaining when the photograph's quality is poor, the image is rotated 90 degrees, and there's no inherent humor beyond "I took a picture and it looks like the minifigs are raping each other".

Note that I'm not telling you to stop posting. I'm telling you that your current effort is inadequate. Build some actual scenery instead of just taking pictures of your figs on a concrete block. Put a little effort into making an effective visual punch instead of more of the same old "these figs are raping these other figs". Classic Space had tons of opposing factions, with Blacktron being the largest "bad" one, but the conflict was never the themes focus; it was more about how the different factions survived and adapted in their different environments and what roles they served in the greater scheme. More than anything, survival was the conflict - at least it felt like to me.
Meanwhile fast-forward to modern themes like Mars Mission, Galaxy Squad, Space Police III, and even the sillier Alien Conquest, and every single set is explicitly a war machine. The people aren't settlers who happen to have conflicts, they're basically just soldiers.
There is a big difference between having an engaging conflict, and sucking out any subtlety other than the conflict.

I don't know anymore. Lego doesn't impress a lot of people, unless it's something really huge or things they know. They like big statues of characters from movies or animals. I always hated those and never understood why are people so impressed by them. I always loved small, inventive, orginal builds where for example hairpieces are used as bushes etc.
Also stubborn normalfags think it's uncreative compared to clay or polymers and you just can't explain to them that when you are limited with shapes or size of pieces you actually have to be more creative. (The same goes for example in literature - french novel 'A Void' is written without letter e and it's hella creative, because most of french feminine adjecives end with e.) Of course there are also annoying mocerfags who think they are some high level artists and keep boasting about how many upvotes their creation got etc.
I was once a tour guide at lego exposition and I was surprised that, no kids were impressed with Star Wars/Supergero stuff, they were mostly looking at city trains. Even Friends, Disney, Princess and Ninjago got more attention. I thought it's becasue star wars were just displyed sets they got at home.
Funny fact. I don't collect Technic, but I was surprised to see how always the biggest Dad Chads were interested in Technic. Seriously, after a while, you could easily tell which guy came here to see lego Technic, because it was always the most muscular, confident looking guy.

To me their golden era was between 1991-1995, and then started to get worse after 1996. I remember 1997-1999 being absolutely horrible for City collectors like me, the vehicles became uninspired and lazy, buildings started to lose play features and important details.

They never managed to recover the greatness of Pirates and Castle lines, though. Ninja was probably the last good thing Castle got (if you don’t consider Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit standard Castle sets). I also have fond memories of Space Police and Alien Conquest, considering both were released during a very nostalgic moment of my life and a couple years before I developed depression.
