Last year I finally found the Outlaw Star figure set of Gene, Melfina and the XGP (with articulated grappler arms) from Bandai, the first run (white card), sealed and in PERFECT condition for $180 plus shipping BuyItNow. The seller had 100% positive feedback and mainly sold things like really high dollar capeshit statues and rare comic issues, with lots of comments about "good packing." Since his feedback was 100% with zero negatives or neutrals, plus the comments on his packing from these $400 fucking capeshit items, I thought I was safe.
Dumb motherfucker _literally_ put my $200 (after shipping) Outlaw Star figure in an old Amazon box, with no additional cardboard, NO bubble wrap around the figure, and a handful of air packets (no peanuts). The post office of course creamed the shitty Amazon box, a couple of the air packets deflated and my MOC figure bounced the fuck around in the box. It arrived creased, bent, dogeared, and generally beat up. And it was not $200 level packing or that of someone with that level of feedback for rare toys/comics collectibles.
I was fucking pissed. He offered to send me the second one he had (he had the two for sale in the same listing) but then got really vague on which one was actually in the picture: the one he sent me or the second one. I decided "fuck it" and wasn't going to risk this asshole's packing job a second time or getting a not-as-nice copy of the figure.
I still have it, I cherish it, but god damn...what a fucking faggot this asstard was. His response on the (shitty ass) packing was "I thought it would be good enough." Just disappointed it didn't arrive in the condition it should have. I had wanted that figure sooo so fucking long because it's literally my favorite anime, and we got in ONE copy of the figure when I worked at EB Games back in 2000, and someone bought it before I could.

Some faggot out for a free replacement to his broken toy once told me I "packed like a child" even with heavy padding and claimed it arrived broken, with no photographic proof offered(always a huge red flag), then demanded a refund or else I'd get a negative feedback.

I refunded him... then reported him for feedback extortion followed by posting on /b/ with his name & home address and telling people he touched kids. He left me a positive almost a month later and I never heard back from him. It's probably some shitfucker that thinks that Paypal extortion is a way to get free toys, but he finally got burned by someone he pulled this shit with. I could tell from the dipshit's message he was used to extorting sellers in this manner as it was threats and insults from the first sentence.

Take that as a lesson- if you gave someone your name & home address, no matter what eBay/Paypal policies are that side with you on claims, they CAN hit you back in a bad way if you cheat them.

That was shitty. As a seller myself (not toys) with over 20k transactions, I wanna say you would've been protected. I had a couple negatives removed after I plead my case to eBay. What time period was this, and did you have a signature required on the package (just curious for discussion sake, not trying to tell-you-so).
In my case above, with the shitty fucking packing job on the figure I bought, after all that bullshit I still didn't leave that asshole a negative. I should have, but I didn't. Partly because I decided to keep the figure so it seemed wrong. Partly because..I dunno, why?

As it stands, I was able to pull in $300 a month before the changes(that's before eBay seller fees, postage costs, etc), with their shitty new algorithms I'm lucky to get 1 sale a week, it's barely worth it to list at all now and giving buyers the ability & power to extort sellers is something else no seller needs since small sellers can get royally fucked with a single claim.

Still mad since this was a pretty good deal.

The other one was a seller refusing to send an item to my location, despite the listing having my location as part of places he was willing to ship. He didn't even talk to me first, he just cancelled. In my rage, I denied the cancelation, starting a chain of issues that lasted for a month before I got my money back.

First a seller had a product listed as complete a CW Ultra Magnus for 30, so I bought it. When it arrived, the Minimus figure was missing, so I message him to see if he forgot, turns out it wasn't part of the auction despite listing the figure as complete. Eventually settled for him sending the cost of a buy it now Minimus on Ebay.

Another time I bought a RD Prototype Gundam, but the seller sent it in one of those card board box covers for books. He smashed the RD box trying to make it fit and had zero padding. While the figure and accessories were miraculously fine, the box and plastic tray were in horrible shape. Since I paid for shipping, I asked if he would refund the shipping or I'd just return it for the piss poor packing job. He refunded the shipping.

I moved and had all my shit in storage. Hurricane Florence hit and I couldn't get to my unit. Once I did, stuff was fucked up on top of me already not knowing where shit was (the Ebay post was auto reposting for months before I moved). I didn't keep the dude waiting for a month though. Sellers can't even leave negative to bad buyers now and so many are probably clueless on how to deal with law enforcement, let alone most cops don't give a shit if it's a small value & no one's going to sue someone in another state over it unless the price is high. Sellers have little recourse when fucked.

I've seen buyers admit they feel as if every item they buy is from eBay. The idea that these are our personal belongings has been willfully done away with by the eBay propaganda machine.

There was a figure lot for sale of the Attack on Titan figmas: Eren, Mikasa, Armin, and both versions of Levi. The starting bid was $70 so I assumed they were bootlegs, but Armin and Cleaning Levi don't have KOs afaik so I went ahead and put in a bid. No one else bid and I got them for $70 + 20 shipping, turned out all were genuine. I was able to resell Cleaning Levi for $80 and almost recouped all my money.

OP here. It’s a classic trick for making an item seem cheap by dividing up the total cost. Grand total was $45.83 originally, and some people would instinctively turn their noses up at a sale price of that with ‘free shipping’, while jumping on a sale price of $25.83 + $20shipping. It’s stupid, but people still fall into this mentality even these days.

BST is full of poorfags only into a select few brands and will act like you insulted them if you list a lesser-known toy or ask more than 50% of retail.

eBay though is just as bad now despite 10000X the potential buyers. Everyone expects you to accept "best offer", they act like "free shipping" is a real service offered by USPS and you're just an asshole for wanting so much for toys. They add it to their watch lists with no intention to buy(derrr durr I'm a seller trying to gauge market value. Search by sold listings? What's that?) and I stopped sending offers to watchers thanks to only ever getting one of them accepted(proving the theory it's rarely interested buyers using the feature). The changed algorithms and forced GTC have royally fucked over anyone who isn't a high-volume business seller and VeRO is abused so much that "first sale doctrine" no longer applies to your belongings if it might somehow cut into company profits(frankly I'm surprised they no longer enforce bans on import video games like they used to) or if they're anal about trademark shit(Velcro damn well abuses it to much they take down a lot of legit listings for no reason), which risks unfair takedowns & possible restrictions over non-issues.

It's really to the point I prefer to sell to local people, have a yard sale or just throw stuff away rather than try to sell a lot of it online, because it either won't sell, or sells for so little I may as well not bother. Shit, if I have to charge $10 shipped for a toy that I'll clear $2 for after postage & fees, I may as well sell it to some local parent for their kid to play with for $2 instead.

Not really a horror story but In the same week I had 2 different Swedes bid on 2 $200+ lego sets and didn't pay. None replied to any of my messages 3 days after they won the auction so I just cancelled the listing with no problem. Was kind of annoying and I considered just blocking Sweden.

Also Italians are cool as fuck when it comes to eBay. Always pay immediately, leave positive feedback before I even ship the item, and I've had a few send me messages after the item was delivered saying that they received the item and really like it. All around very nice people.

Nothing really specific or that horrible but I've ordered half a dozen third party transformers in the last couple of months since they are sold out at the usual spots, and literally every single one has been a scam.

I've recieved lego minifigs, instructions, pamphlets, food, etc etc.

It's that excitement of having something arrive turn to disappointment as the postman hands over something that so obviously isnt the size it should be, to the stress of the back and forth between myself and ebay for the next couple of weeks ensuring I get a refund and am not shafted by the multitude of deadlines and abused loopholes that could see me losing my money.

Not bothering with ebay from here on.

I bought a MP Ratchet for cheap last year from TFW's B/S/T. I sent payment as a gift because at this point I've had solid transactions and their feedback thread looked fine. No packaging or paperwork for some reason, but that's alright because I'm going to mod it into the Marvel deco.

Shipping is like $10.42 or something along those lines. When it arrives, it barely arrives. The box is a cubic foot for no reason and almost open. The figure was dropped into the box with barely any paper, the accessories are in an unzipped sandwich bag, and his face is off and floating around in this mess. Miraculously the figure survived with just a few repairable paint chips and all accessories.

Here comes the next problem, though: Half of the chrome rocket is missing. It was slotted into the launcher when it arrived so I doubt it came loose and worked its way out of the box, so I ask the seller to check and make sure it's not in their parts drawer or something. It's not. The seller removed the photo from their thread when I bought it, like they do with other things, and stupid me forgot to save it. I tried looking through their imgur, tried a google image search, etc; but couldn't find it to check and see if the rocket was complete when I bought it. I ask if they still have the photo, just out of curiosity. They don't, because they made a habit out of deleting sales photos for space/tidiness as soon as they're paid for them. In another stroke of bitter luck I was able to buy a replacement on eBay for about $5.

So yeah, NEVER EVER mark your payment as a gift, and archive private listings for your records. I would've held them to a partial refund if I could've.

Took like 10 high-res pictures of everything with close-ups of the damages; include "Damaged" in the listing title and like 4 times in the item description; set the BIN price to like $40 shipped (other new authentic ones went for over $150).
Someone buys it, ship it to them, then literally 3 WEEKS LATER I get a SCATHING message from the buyer complaining that the figure was damaged at the elbow and ankle, that it was for a birthday present for their kid, and that I should be ashamed as a seller for selling damaged toys. Demanded that I send them another undamaged one for free.
Well I had a fun time taking screenshots of the original listing and pointing that I had clearly mentioned the damages everywhere.

Yeah, eBay is a joke. I do toy shows and I did almost triple in one weekend what I've done on eBay all year. Add the other two one-day shows and it's over four times the sales. eBay has been slower than it should be for years but I have never seen it as slow as it's been this year.

So my story takes place back in the 2000's. Back then Ebay had more of a 'seller is always right' policy, so it was harder to get you money back and more predatory selling was going on.

I was looking at a seller from Hong Kong who had nearly every Gundam kits and was selling the for about $10 less than anyone else. A kit I wanted had just been released and the price was very good. Lots of sales and lots of good feedback. So I buy the kit and I wait...and wait...and wait...and it never comes.

So after few weeks I go back to the seller to find out what's up and the seller has been banned for bad feedback. From the comments it looks like around the time I bought my kit he had just stopped shipping them. At the time Ebay didn't have good policies for getting your money back so I had to go to my bank (which issued my credit card) and get the money refunded.

Now I was also part of a large number of Gundam message boards at the time and complained about the issue. Several other people said they had the same happen to them, many whom were unable to get their money back.

About a month later I notice the kit I wanted on sale on Ebay for the same price. I check the new seller's inventory and he's sellign the exact same stuff for the same prices. For whatever reason I decided to roll the dice and buy it. After a few weeks, IT COMES. I'm happy, but I'm also suspicious. I check in on the seller every week just to see. Turns out after about 3-4 months all the positive feedback becomes negative and the account gets banned. Hmm...interesting. I wait about another month and a seller pops up again with the same inventory and same prices, always in Hong Kong. Looks to me like someone is selling kits on Ebay at a discount, getting a positive reptation, and after a few months they just stop selling until they get shut down. Start a new account, rinse, and repeat.

I'm talking to people online, warning them about this scammer. There's a few people who've gotten screwed and are upset. About six months later I get a private message asking if I would be willing to make a statement for the HK police.

Turns out someone was REALLY pissed about getting scammed and had a contact in HK that got him in communication with the police. he was taking statements from people to provide evidence against the seller.

About a month after my statement I get another message that the seller was arrested by local police. Several people got their money refunded, or at least that what I was told. This was all told to me via messages so I can't really confirm it. But I do know about the time I was told the seller was arrested those suspicious listings stopped popping up on Ebay.

So take that as you will. I like to believe I helped a bit in getting a Gundam Ebay scammer from HK arrested.

Shorter stories:

I saw someone in HK selling a bunch of Eureka Seven kits for cheap. I contact him and ask what the combined shipping for all would be. He tells me the same for a single kit. Great! I buy all four and send a payment. He asks for about $25 more. I ask why he said the shipping for 4 would be the same as shipping for one. He says he was confused and though I was only asking about 1 kit, not four. We go back and forth a bit and eventually I agree to pay another $5 for shipping because of the misunderstanding.

About 2 weeks later I haven't gotten anything and contact him asking where they were. He told me because he didn't get the full payment for shipping, they were send out by SURFACE mail and should get there in 2 months instead of 2 weeks.

Sure enough they arrive about that time. All he did for packaging was stack the boxes together, wrap them in brown paper, and tie it with string. Of course one of the corners looks like it has been kicked in. I leave negative feedback And he freaks out about me being a difficult buyer.

I used to mail at the PO. I switched to eBay's label system. Postage rates are a lot LOWER this way. Plus I can leave small things in the mailbox with the flag up, or schedule pickups for larger. It also means same or next day mailing, instead of "whenever I go to the store because I'm not spending gas money on daily PO trips" and not having to manually type in tracking numbers. My pickups also go out same day from the PO, same as if I dropped them off.

Like two peoole have already said, people use it as a reminder for what they want to buy later. Not everyone jumps on a sale right away, sometimes your funds aren't good at the time and you think "hey if it's still there by the end of the month I'll buy it so I'll just watch it to keep track of it".

eBay's labels are marginally cheaper, because they get commercial base rate, which USPS took away from individuals a couple of years ago, and pass along _part_ of the discount. So do PirateShip, Stamps.com, etc. All have their caveats - different labels, no e-mail notifications, etc.

The thing is, CBR was only ever about 10% cheaper. The discount didn't even cover eBay's fees on shipping. You know what 10% of an $8 shipping charge is? 80 cents. You're letting 80 cents make or break a sale? Wait, not even, because eBay's only returning _part_ of that discount.

Why would I watch ebay listings by way of my browser bookmarks when it's significantly easier to use the in-ebay function of the watch list? And I use it that way all the time, as a quick list I can look over when I have some money to spend.

15 year eBay seller here (2001-2015) with over 7,400 feedback (100% positive rating) and roughly ~30,000 actual transactions. What anon says above is absolutely correct. As a _buyer_, and I buy a lot on eBay, the Watch List serves to keep track of things I want but am not ready to buy yet, don't have money for yet, want to save while I continue searching in case I don't find a better condition/price on that particular item, et cetera. NOT for waiting for the seller to drop the price, send me one of those offers, et cetera. As a seller, from my own experience, the worst trap you can fall into is obsessing over the watch count on your listings and wondering why people aren't buying. High watch counts can mean anything: lots of people are interested in it but aren't ready to buy yet for one of MANY reasons, it's a rare item or new item to a community that may want to discuss it among themselves on forums and such, morbid curiosity, they have one themselves, they think your price is absurd and want to see the show, et cetera.
Really the only real, tangible reason to keep track of how many watches your listings have is to make sure your price isn't obscenely high, et cetera. If your view-to-watch ratios are way the fuck off, it could mean something.

What I sold wasn't toys, it was performance automotive parts from Japan, for Japanese cars, some rare/hard to get spares, et cetera, for people here (and elsewhere in the world) with those cars/engines. I had actually started doing it on the side in 2000 or so..was really one of the first people here in the US to find a forwarding agent in Japan willing to buy off of YJA and handle automotive parts (this was before people like Celga, Rinkya, SMJ, Crescent Trading/Noppin, et cetera). My first few years were super, super strong so much that I made it full time. Then more people began doing. Then more & more of the stuff I sold was began getting knocked off in China. I was _barely_ keeping the bills paid in 2015 and finally said fuck it. Now it's back to a side thing whenever I have time. I was naive and stupid to not realize what was going to happen. I've had one Japanese seller say they won't and another one who said they won't but did anyway.
Meanwhile I find Chinese sellers are happy to do it a majority of the time as long as you tell them how much to mark it down as (or some will just do if by themselves without having to ask).
It's best to check the description of items because the ones who won't normally say so in there, if it doesn't say it message them to be sure.

If you want stuff from Japan, go direct to the source and buy it through a shopping service. The base price will almost certainly be cheaper and you can usually consolidate a few things in one package. At one point I was buying lots of low-value bits off ebay and those £8 per item handling fees for things that were only attracting pennies in VAT were getting ridiculous.

Asking sellers to underdeclare is a difficult one - I found Japanese sellers were much more willing 10 years ago or so whereas now they're much more hesitant. In theory, if you ask to have something marked as "gift" from a private seller, you have an allowance of £35 instead of the usual £15 however in practice UK customs completely ignores this, even if the sender is very clearly not a business.

My favourite SS for Yahoo auctions is Zenmarket because they offer a lot of flexibility wrt packaging and allow you to take a lot of liberties with the customs declarations should you wish to do so. Supposedly they have some sort of third-party insurance that covers the undeclared portion should you need to make a claim, but I've never needed to make use of it so I can't speak to how easy it would be to get your money back.

You have to remember that there's a hundreds of millions of customers that we're used shipping to domestically, while foreigners need to ship internationally or face not making any money, especially with niche products.
It's not familiar territory for US based sellers, thus not safe.

Personally, i don't mind shipping to most foreign countries, but some places are fucking stupid with using their own language's alphabet and the USPS system (and fed ex and UPS) not being designed to handle other language's alphabets, like Japanese or Russian.
That's extra work, unless the customer is wise enough to include his address in the English alphabet

Honestly the VAT isn't too bad, the main problem for me at least is the handling fees. Royal Mail's fee is £8 on top of whatever the VAT was but stuff like Parcel Force charge about £10+ (I forget the exact amount).

Yes. For example I recently got some figures that totalled about £40 and I got a £15 bill to pay.

Yeah. I think how it works is that the courier is paying the customs charge and then you're paying them back + interest for handling and stuff.

I mean, you have to remember not everyone selling toys on eBay is a toy enthusiast..there are a lot of sellers on eBay who have DAD list the item using his phone since he's sold on eBay before, and then MOM ship the item because she gets boxes and tape at work while the original "seller" is busy watching their cousin's children, all in the same house.
