It's like how the specifics of Luke making his own lightsaber from Shadows aren't canon but were only written in the first place based on what ROTJ inferred by him having a completely new one in a new color and the scene where it shows him making it being cut from the final edit.
EU as informed by the films is different than like the invasion of the sentient dinosaur race in the new jedi order. Which is why Disney throwing all of it out was one of the most retarded decisions ever because it now calls into question things that were literally given the go-ahead by Lucas himself to fill in gaps that needed filling.
