George HIMSELF said all he ever expected was a cookie jar or a few knick-knacks. NOBODY expected SW to turn out to be the success it became. Planet of the Apes was the biggest merchandiser prior to SW, and even it didn't have the enormous success of SW.
SW was about the story. They hoped to get some tie-in products because GL was wise enough to drop his fee and get merch royalties instead. ESB was an UNKNOWN quantity, successful sequels in 1980 were a rarity, and we got a small handful of new shit (AT-AT's, Yoda, Snowspeeders), THEN Return of the Jedi BLEW it the fuck out with tons of Jabba aliens and Ewoks. Toss in a very small number of new Imperials over the 2 sequels (Hoth Snowtroopers, Biker Scouts, etc)
BUT this shit all "fit" and worked well from a story perspective, BECAUSE the OT was about STORY FIRST.
The Prequels, on the other hand, went full Skittles Colored Clones and endless deco's JUST for toymakers to amortize costs and get the most out of every mold.
But you monkey-brained children think that just because shit happens, that was always the intent, and you're just so unbearably stupid in your total lack of wisdom or critical thinking.
Merchandising was a gradual process, and didn't put the cart before the horse until the third film, while going utterly off the rails for the prequels.
