I tend to slightly favor Newage, but I feel like Magic Square's Soundwave is pretty much "Sunbow perfect." I also think MS Megatron is shaping up to beat Newage (still holding out for a Newage Optimus though)

I don't think they'll beat the NA Megatron in terms of raw quality. I doubt their transformation will be anywhere near as cool either, although you might get double-jointed elbows.

Sunbow fans lack good taste.

Also, fuck these leader class prices. I'm glad that MFT KOs these things. At this point, MS is like Hasbro- they only exist so someone can make a better version for less money later.

They seem to be the same company, yes. QC can vary slightly from copy to copy though. I also think there was a mold change, one I bought several years ago would not let the legs fold down fully, the plastic indent they sat in was molded too far back. One I got about 2 years ago didn't have that issue.

They also won't work with the BTS jetpack as those require the G2 and later mold revision with back notch, and getting the BTS matrix inside is a tight fit.

And 95% of people who buy this will ignore that look for MUH SUNBOW which doesn't even look good.

Hopefully the MFT version keeps those parts, not too thrilled by the cars being armor either but an MFT set would be cheap enough to warrant getting.

I don't see how knees are even going to work as both them and the elbows have to bend both ways to handle the torso being reversed for either look, and I see no knee joints

Soundwave looks good, but Reflector and Starscream are poor efforts vs Newage's. Honestly Newage have ruined Magic Square for me, while I really like MS's sculpts and engineering the amazingly fun and creative NA transformations, better face sculpts, and their insanely higher plastic and paint quality win out for me.

It's mostly the tiny-ass wheels. Sure, there are dimensional issues, but those are minor compared to the wheels.

The tiny wheels are probably a compromise due to the challenges of hiding them in jump jet mode, but could have gone with foldable wheels (TLK Hound).

It's kinda funny how he has all these 5mm ports on him but not many places to fit stuff on him. Best storage I could find was his shoulder ports but needed to rotate them open, which is not a good look. Probably just pretend those wholes are subspace storage.

Good thing it has Violence Hand mode. It's a shame it looks like it partsforms on instead of being able to swing out like UT's and other blots.

God UT's blot is still one of the best things in third party. I still don't know exactly what went right and it wasn't perfect but I regret ever selling him as part of the set.

I like light piping. It's a simple and cheap way to make the eyes glow and is just about always a pretty cool effect. The only thing I don't like about it is when they just lazily make the entire back half of the head translucent to accommodate it because more often than not, that's just overkill. Plenty of figures have managed great light piping effects with just a small slit of it that you barely even notice.

Yeah. Instead of waiting for an explanation from him, they jumped straight to the (in their eyes) worst case scenario and assumed he was directly involved. How anyone can still be licking takara's boots by that point is beyond me but they were upset by the prospect that he could be profiting off of such IP theft. Yeah my thoughts exactly. It doesn't take much to achieve decent light piping but some companies coughcoughTFCcoughcough aren't happy unless half the head looks like a goddamn jolly rancher.

The best thing to do with eyes anyway though is to have painted eyes with light up LEDs underneath. Takara's been doing that with their BW MPs and it looks great, although the fact that the LEDs don't stay on makes it pretty dumb though.

Looks good for the most part but that face needs some serious work. It looks like it's trying to avoid doing a movie face so it clashes with the rest of the design but it also doesn't really match up with a normal face either so it doesn't even really look like Starscream. In the end, it's just a really bad face.

Painted eyes over LEDs are nice but I'm not the biggest fan of them on anything that isn't large enough to make the space for them. They're also just not a feature that ever sees much use because they're limited by battery life. They look cool when they're on but honestly, how often am I ever going to turn them on? I could turn them on and leave them but then I'll have a dead battery in a day or two and have to replace it because even with something as efficient as an LED, button batteries have garbage lifespans. In the end, it's just a feature that drives up the price for not enough benefit. I'm a bigger fan of well done light piping because it lasts forever and doesn't inflate the price.

I guess light up eyes are a gimmick that still works for me. It's always pleasant when it's done well. I wouldn't leave lights on 24/7 on display but it's nice to just have and leave on if you're trying to show something off or while you're playing with it.

Also I people keep saying electronics drive up the price but I don't think people really realize how absolutely dirt cheap electronics are, even PCBs and chips. Like a bulk produced PCB is nothing, especially compared to literally any other thing that goes into a figure. I'd wager the most expensive part is probably having to have extra plastic for a battery compartment.

the components themselves are dirt cheap, yes, but that's not how setting a price works. If that were the case, 3p figures wouldn't cost much more than hasbro's offerings. The added cost generally comes from the added effort to incorporate the electronics because it is a good deal more work and planning, not to mention assembling, than just casting two halves of a head and screwing them together. Plus, you can end up with a similar situation to how a lot of companies treat di-cast materials where they inflate the price far beyond the material cost just because the metal makes it FEEL premium when in reality, di-cast is actually cheaper to produce than plastic because it's piss poor quality metal. That's not to say di-cast is BAD in and of itself. It's great when used for feet to help give the figure better balance but there are plenty of companies that overuse it and put it in really stupid places just to give the illusion of high quality and an excuse to inflate the price and the figure often suffers for it.

Something like a fanstoys figure that's like 99% painted diecast could justify a premium price, but it's definitely a meme on something like the movie MPs that just have unpainted chunks of diecast added for weight.

Who was all on that dang ship? Swerve, Ratchet, Drift, Tailgate, Cyclonus, Whirl, Chromedome, Rewind, Megatron...

Megatron for another bulky team member and to get a legends version of the design.
Whirl for visual diversity and giving a combined mode rotors.
And Swerve because I like him. He can become the weapon of the combined mode. Just use the whole of his boxy car mode as the head of a hammer.

Sure, if they can prove it won't shred joints, scrape, rust, or fuck up joints due to extra weight. Really, the best use of discast would be to just put a fucking weight of it in a figure's hollowed feet, where it would never see the light of day and not fuck up a figure.

Drift is from IF 1.0, the period where everyone was laughing at their altmodes. They have no issue redoing characters from that period, like how Ultra Magnus and Soundwave 2.0 are underway. Just a matter of whether the character is big enough for a redo.

The movies sucked ass but there were some cool/interesting designs in there. Plus, Bumblebee did pretty well as being more like what fans were expecting out of a TF movie and had some pretty good designs to boot. Oh, and don't forget that it was only a matter of time because regardless of what the western fans think of the movies, China fucking LOVED them.

All in all, it's fine. Whether you like them or not, it's not really cutting into G1 anyway because 3p will NEVER stop milking that cash cow so why not have more variety on the market for folks with different preferences? Hell, it also seems to be flexing that creative engineering muscle of those bug people and they're starting to apply it to finally tap into the Prime series so hey, no complaints here.

Not even a little. MP combiners have only gotten started and there's still a ton left in G1 beyond that. I'm not even talking about obscure one-off characters either. We've also got companies like FT pulling city/base bots out of their asses so there's plenty of those left to cover too.

Between Takara and 3P the season one cast is all but complete. That's the core focus for many collectors. Season 2 and the 84 movie are nearing completion as well. Season 3 and 4 nobody really cares about save for a few stand outs.

We've got Two of the big three already (devestator and bruticus) with XTB and FT racing to finish Menasor. The other combiners are no where near as popular.

I think what it boils down too is are people so unhappy with their current offering their willing to shell out another $600 altogether for another combiner. For most people Constructor and Armageddon fit the bill for MP scaled rep of those two characters. That hole is filled and they've moved on. Only thing that would probably make me swap out my constructor would be a Takara Devestator. Bruticus however I am switching out for MMC version and with them making a defensor to put against him that switch out it more than justified for me.
