Do anyone here collect the old Super Battle Collection series?
I have a soft spot for them, especially SSJ Goku, still one of my fav figures.
I know there's more fancy ones now, but this one was the first one, was well done, it's iconic.

I bought most of them when they were on those Jazzwares green cards waaaay back when. They were pretty cool because they were the only ones out there. I think it's comparable to Secret Wars as there's a soft spot for them because they were the only figures for those characters for a long time.

On an odd note I found Janemba before I found the reissued SBC figures.

I have about half of the Collection. Never understood the clip on shirts or the Gold Hair Super Saiyans, but it was still a cool line to collect. Vol 00 Goku would be cool with yellow hair.

I've always wanted that Goku set where he comes with the base through ss3 heads. I used to have some of these but lost them in the shuffle of moving all the time as a kid, sadly.

The Irwin releases were a fairly important part of my childhood. Before that Bandai America did a small run of them when the series was in syndication around 97/98, which seems hard to find info about, but they were in Bandai toy catalogs around PR In Space/Turbo.

Also have a fondness for the AB toys molds Irwin added in their US line. They had a larger selection than Bandai did(adding characters like Bardock, and looks they didn't do from the Buu saga.) Some figures were arguably nicer done than SBC, like this SS3 Goku. While they are dated figures,I d think they're more charming than Irwin's original attempts, and later Jakks.

Shame there's very little detailed info online about the early Dragon ball merchandise.

I'm not a huge DBZ fan so I never bought any figures, but if I did, I'd probably go with these solely because they look like TOYS. As in, something you can physically bash together and they won't be any worse off the wear for it.

I only wish they had articulation below the waist too.

i've got 3 of them, all picked up last year at a toy show. out of the three though, i only actually had one of them as a kid, that being base goku. i'd always wanted ss goku and ss vegeta as a kid, and having found them in the box for 10 each, i had to jump on it.

They really came out at a weird time, I often wonder what it would be like if DBZ came out in the USA around 1992, like would I still have picked up on power rangers, and would the western comics boom of the early 90s have been overshadowed by a manga boom? We probably would've got all the nes/snes games translated for north america when they fresh too.

While the DBZ and Sailor Moon mangas were translated in the late 90s/early 2000s during the height of their popularity(though DB is still popular now), it didn't create a manga boom as much as Shonen Jump getting an American version did. Prior to that, the process of localizing manga was mostly to conform it to American comics style publishing, both in print size, and release schedule. Manga was secondary to the anime. Then in the 2000s when Tokyopop was getting manga into bookstores and letting kids just read them at their own convenience plus the boom in scanlation sites really gave it the push in the US it didn't have before. hot take but 90's anime fans really didn't care as much about manga, most were in it for the animation. A lot of the manga that was brought over after an initial indie boom was mainly based on OVAs and tv series that people liked.
