People gave him pats on the back, because they were above most customs you saw back then. He got a LOT of notice when he made an AOTC Padme with her tits revealed, and the eBay auction for it was taken down by Lucasfilms. However, his customs never really sold for much because it was just a custom by some dude. People noticed any that sold at a high amount were all being won by the same account (before eBay put filters on who won stuff). After eBay made a change that you couldn't see who won something, his stuff started doing for $100+ constantly. For...customs done by some unknown guy? So it was theorized even then that he would buy his own work so he could show off that his stuff would make money. He'd just eat the fees as advertising money.
Think on it, Jin has been selling customs on eBay for years. Has anyone ever come on here to show their Jin custom? Their collection of them? Has one ever showed up on eBay not being sold by him?
Do I believe people have bought some of his stuff? Sure. Especially when it sold for like $30-$40. Do I believe there is a cabal of people who buy his shit for $300? No. Why would he sell them on eBay then? Why not just open a store or sell direct and not lose money?
Notice he also has perfect scores from buyers and perfect feedback. He just wants to make a name for himself and he can't because he's not really a sculptor. He's a retooler, and at that he's alright but he's not a God. I mean look at his nearly Geocities website. It's pathetic. Anyone serious about representing themselves wouldn't use that. It's littered with ads and has an image background.
He's just some dude who got a little notice in the mid 2000s and it went to his head. Now he just trolls people and tries to act like some big important person.
