I shouldn't get the warrior class. Then again I think it was because the warrior class is selling well hence the new deluxe.

And I think they raise the price starting the new year again. The damn thing is 26 USD where I live and the only place you can get the new cyberverse stuff is at TRU.

I am feeling I am getting priced out of collecting soon with the ways thing is going. It is just way cheaper to get my robot fix with the HGUC line

Yeah, I lost a lot of interest around 2015 when mainline stuff started to get really cheap-looking with combiner wars. Combiner Wars was one of the first times there was a notable regression in retail toy quality, and honestly that's around the point where you started to see people white-knighting for chintzy toy design; I don't recall people trying to demonize paint, transparent plastic, and pinned wheels very often before that point.

The LG releases were solid, but christ if PotP doesn't go down as one of the worst toylines ever... Between that and the MP line going to shit, my wallet has been very thankful in recent years.

The stickers in POTP were weird because wasn't it only the leader and Voyager class figures that had them? Meanwhile all the Deluxes were painted.
Anyway I wouldn't call it the worst line either, but then again I'm not versed enough to know what I would consider the "worse line".

MP Bayverse Bumblebee is unironically cleaner than Bee2, especially in the backpack. A Bay MP is a cleaner looking robot than a G1 MP while being a larger, cheaper figure. You tell that to anyone 5 years ago they'd probably laugh so hard they'd die of an aneurysm.
Sunbow MPs are terrible and Bee2 is the worst of them.

Thinking about getting this version of MP Optimus Primal. Any problems I should be aware of other than potential paint chipping? Apparently the transformation lends for easy chipping on the back and chest. Most of these Beast Wars MPs have a glaring issue (Dinobot and Megatron come to mind). Just wondering if plopping 110 or so burger bucks is worth the trouble.

Feels redundant to me. It's MP Primal but done to look like the original toy... but the original toy is a great toy in its own right, so having an MP that tries to be show accurate but then forcing it to look like a toy is just weird. It won't have the fun gimmicks of the original toy or anything.

It's almost like a character with one of the simplest transformation schemes in the history of the brand should be cleaner looking robot than the multimillion dollar CGI version that's a cheating heap of scrap metal regardless of size, right? There was an entire toyline based on that idea.
But no, they had to try and make a tiny figure cheat 80% of its altmode away and replace it with fake parts because they're dead-set on a retarded design direction that demands impossible engineering for the simplest things.

I guarantee you if it didn't have that MP badge and it came out as a CHUG in 2010 (when deluxes could be that complex) you'd be shitting all over it and singing MP-21's praises. But it's new product, and more expensive product, so it must be better product, right?

I don't have a lot of nostalgia for season 3 but I loved them in the movie. It was really great to see the TF universe expanded with new threats and bizarre new forms of cybernetic life. The Quintessons were really memorable and strange and creepy and I'd really like to have a five-faced eggmonster.

Primal is solid all around. Just be aware of the paint chipping yeah. There are kind of a lot of areas where paint chipping can occur, moreso than the normal version because that version used tampographing for most of the deco, which is a lot more resistant to damage than traditional paint.

They were much better, and unless you've got some autistic hang-up over the "forced partsforming", that whole era has some really great figures, especially deluxes. Hasbro's QC and general level of fit and finish was pretty fuckin' bad, though. Despite being an awesome figure, Twinferno was the biggest shelfwarmer because its lack of paint and yellowed plastic made it look like shit.

I bought a few Japanese releases in that era thanks to the weak yen, but honestly it wasn't that worth it. retail transformers are still American retail figures even with paint slapped on them. Plus stuff like Legends Astrotrain feels pointless with the Siege version out. I'd rather spend that money on 3P these days.

There was still tons of great stuff like Misfire, Triggerhappy, Topspin, Kup, all the Autobot Headmasters, G2 Megatron... they were all great figures that hadn't had updates and likely won't see updates again for years to come. If you'd let something like a hollow arm or a lack of wrist swivels ruin these figures for you, then you really must not buy very much at all.

I don't mean the era as a whole wasn't worth it, I mean importing the Japanese versions. Having the paint be more toon accurate only does so much and ultimately feels sort of pointless when the design itself isn't striving for 100% toon accuracy anyway. Basically I feel like I collect retail TFs more for the playability and engineering(because having so many unique transformations is something no other line can accomplish) so the amount of paint on them is relatively less important to me. I don't want somethign unpainted, but the difference in , say, TR Triggerhappy and Legends isn't enough to make the price of the Takara Legends worth it to me.

I was mostly into LGs around the Headmasters era, almost entirely because of the proper paint applications. All the completely unpainted hasbro headmasters were just abysmal compared to Takara, it's like why even bother with the feature at that point?

This wasn't the major appeal to me, but moreso that the materials and paint on the LG versions simply looked better. Even if the overall design of the toy wasn't intended to be cartoon accurate, Takara's versions typically had cleaner, more opaque colors and details like painted grills/wheels that made the figures look better just because they indicated more effort.

Funny you mention Triggerhappy in particularl, he was one figure where the better plastic quality and nicer paint apps made the LG version more than worth it for me.

This, too. I realized very quickly that I liked the Headmaster gimmick a lot and wanted the little bots to feel as much like actual figures as possible. Takara's versions helped out a lot with that, and it was particlularly fun on the later releases that also included a Targetmaster.

I tried to fix the blandness of TR Topspin's chest by doing some panel lining with a Gundam marker, but the white plastic they used was so shitty, grainy, and porous that after a day, the panel lines all got absorbed into the plastic and ruined it.

In my opinion, it's the Takara paintjobs that make many of them worth owning. But then, I'm not just out to fill my checklist in the most cost-effective way, so I don't look at collecting like that.

I look at it like gunpla where paint can really bring out the full potential of a figure. That said it can really depend on the mold itself and if it's something I do want to spend the extra dollars on to get the best version.

It's the worst MP I personally bought, so that's a fair price for it. It's just so rickety and unstable feeling... weirdly, the TRU Starscream remold doesn't have that same feeling to me. I guess it's just the MP03 tooling that's got that flaw.

The problem with that era of Takara releases was that the paintjobs were nicer, quality-wise, but often because they were cartoon accurate, you'd occasionally end up with stuff like LG Wheelie where the paintjob ends up being oddly bland and poorly-laid out, because the figures weren't designed with those aesthetics in mind.

I liked the LG line, but sometimes getting good-looking figures between Hasbro and Takara's stubborn idiocy often felt like waiting for two broken clocks to both be right at the same time.

You guys miss the point, I'm not saying I don't buy those toys, just that after importing them during that era I found it wasn't that worth it to spring the extra for the imported versions for a little extra paint. I like TFs as cheap toys, I don't need them to be slathered in paint and meticulous cartoon paint matching to enjoy them.

There's a "collector's" store in my local mall, the kinda place that does custom nerf guns and a gallery of deviant art on display.

For the low cost of 150 dollars I could own a Classics Jetfire that has completely yellowed, missing accessories, most of the ones it did have were broken or deformed. Thing couldn't even stand in its own display case.

They also had a shattered G1 Blitzwing for 200. And a Takara Animated Shockwave for 60 bucks.

The only rare or pain in the ass micromasters to find are the 3 combiner transports, the rocket base, Battlefield HQ and the Anti-aircraft base.

Rocket base has a ton of small parts but the main body and rocket itself are fairy common, all Series 1 micromasters are not rare and are fairly inexpensive. Both The Airfield base and Roughstuff go for around the same price complete.

You might be better off customizing it yourself, though the ears, eyes, and red bits below the crest are nearly impossible to mask off properly. I ended up freehand brushing those details and they were still a pain in the ass.

I've seen people joke about that but Hasbro probably would do that if material costs shot way up just so they could sell something. Know the fuck what? I'd buy it. If it meant not setting aside an afternoon to go from one doe to the next, I'd buy 2 fucking non-transforming toys in a package. The MP line has become a fucking nightmare to deal with and shit like Blackarachnia wasn't worth keeping the gimmick. Armada laserbeak gets shit on a lot but I don't need to take a day off work to transform that and it looks good in both modes too. The simpler, fun toys that look good are taking a bad backseat to shit designed by engineers. Where's that MP Sunstreaker pic where it's all exploded out? That shit's not right.

G1 Megatron can't be sold as a gun in the US anyway. I'd rather it get a big action figure than some Japan-only puzzle that must cheat because going from anything that resembles the G1 character model to an actual gun is going to involve some massive trickery. The original toy proved there's little to work with in that regard. I just don't want to have to pay 2X markup to import it or spend all that time fucking with one mode to the next.

Just got Astrotrain. Really really like the figure. Transformation is slick and gives to very good modes without any real cheating or laziness and I like the weapons carriage far more than I should, the ability to turn it into a massive backpack full of guns is a lot of fun.

While the tolerances on the figure seem absolutely perfect, I noticed the backpack doesn't fold flat for shuttle base mode. Any ideas why that is? Both the foot pads section and the big black section don't like to flatten out. Any ideas?

In Takara's defense, the logistics of making combiner limbs that are sturdy, transform fully, have full articulation, and are profitable at the deluxe price point are rather difficult.

Most of the still suck, yes, but combining figures that have any merit on their own do come with sacrifices. Look at the studio series constructicons. They're great fun even if the sacrifices made to make them form Devastator sour some of them.

How so? There are a lot of fun toys with great designs. I don't think there were any bad toys of the lot-- they just could feel a bit samey with how they had to integrate the scramble limb modes. What do you consider a good toy if you think something like Silverbolt is the worst.

Don't be a dumbass, the robot mode is based on the G1 cartoon design but the nubs on the feet are just that, black nubs on the feet on robot mode, not wheels.
Calling it a faux part is like calling the silver part of Optimus Prime's torso a faux part because it's not the white stripe from the vehicle mode.

In the event you mean Crosshairs, then yeah, he doesn't have Ironhide's leg flap issues or Ratchet's ankle issues.

Still a pretty boring figure though. The colors make him feel like he was pieced together from different figures.

I hope so too, apparently there is a Cyberverse figure so at least the characters on their radar.
One way I could see them doing it is like what they did with Refraktor: sell a stand alone bot with his own alt mode and of you buy too you can conjoin them.

Which other movie characters with awful Studio Series figures deserve a proper version? All I can think of is DOTM Megatron, because that awful cab really sours the figure.

Car Shatter is pretty bad, but Jet Shatter is really accurate. Brawl looks dumb as hell, but he's completely accurate to the movie so we can't really complain.

Then of course there are the new characters that don't have confirmed figures yet, like Sentinel Prime, Galvatron, Topspin and Leadfoot, The Fallen, Satellite Soundwave, Skids and Mudflap, Onslaught, Dreadbot (dumb as hell name, but a Decepticon Dread that turns into a hippie van? Yes please), Hatchet (the dog guy from the Dreads), maybe a Hound, Crosshairs, Dino/Mirage, maybe some of the other Dinobots

I'd definitely rather a muscle car Shatter with a accurate looking robot mode.
DOTM Megatron also deserves another go.
How bout Blackout with some tweaks to give him proper feet and hands? Clunker Bee needs some help too. I would settle for some better paint apps on the older figures to help them pop.
