It just feels like Carrey's gotten older and doesn't have the acting bug biting him as hard as he once had, and also isn't above taking a silly role again.
Frankly, I think this might actually end up being decent since it feels like he's only going 40% wacky instead of 200% wacky, and I think a slightly less off-the-wall but still cartoonish performance would make for a fun Eggman, and maybe a decent use of a more aged and refined Carrey.
