They have since 1995, there was at least an expectation from years of complacency.

right I think that was the 2nd big misstep was they didn't understand the 90s craze was born from lack of products where by 2014 you have almost everything Star Wars up.

For me the unholy trinity of bad materials to make large parts of your toy from are
diecast
rubber
translucent plastic
in order from worse to least. Rubber and Translucent can at least be crafted in a way where they have higher resistance to cracking or breaking and if used only in small amounts have the density to last. Diecast is a mess of weight and tolerance issues no matter how you make it and keeping paint on it isn't going to end well

Even structurally metal is just more weight to accomplish the same goal those other materials could with sharper details, more colors, better adhesion to paints and glues, and better tolerances with each other to avoid shearing themselves from just moving.

I don’t know why car, tech, and other collecting enthusiasts celebrate their vices getting lighter and less metal, but toys still have tons of people begging for HEFT because old toys used it.
