Why is keetongu such a patrician set? I doubt i am the first one to ask this, and i will attempt to give an answer:
Where the common set features competent but ultimately overefficient builds and strong resemblance to others of its kind (kanohi and weaponry being the primary difference aside from colour) Keetongu is utterly unique. While all of his weapon parts are no different from ones used before, the open and sometimes flawed design (no hands being the worst offender, at a minor annoyance to the art-shaped eye) it lends itself to the builder in all true Bionicle fans more than any comparable set. It would take too long to recount all the joyful days i spent tinkering on my Keetongu after school, always coming back to the marvel of a torso with high demands to myself and a soft fear of taking away from the absolute migh his build seemingly radiates. I never found much to add to the spinning shield, the Rhotuka mechanism however was also subject to constant study of both lock and the way it magically extended into a decidedly more militaresqe shilouette. This is the first reason it is a build for the patrician, it inspires the mind and demands the attention of your hands the same instant. Perhaps this makes it the set to stay closest to the values of Bionicle: Make something new, with its roots deep inside a glorious past.

Keetongu is a build of character first and mass appeal second, loathed by the weak minds that praise CCBShit and regarded with respectful distance by any but the worthy.

Keetongu is a set and a challenge - it challenges you to recognize him for who he is, demands you to respect the art set before you and lastly, under the graceful stare of his never-closing eye, invites you to change all facets of him while remaining true to a vision so strong and decided it scares away the fool and lets them cower in fear. You can insult him, you can try to ignore him, but he will always tower in the past, a dreadful reminder to what the idiot will never manage to do. TL;DR: If you love yourself, you love Keetongu and vice versa.

It's weird to me that Keelerak and Boggarak are built exactly the same way. All of the other Visorak have slightly different parts usage except for these two. Why didn't they give Boggarak Bohrok limbs in front?

Has anybody here had their opinions on a set change positively because of unrelated fanmade stuff? Honestly one of the few reasons I've grown to appreciate the negative aspects of Jaller Inika, Tahu Stars, and the like are because I enjoyed them in Jaller Locobolt and Reviving Bionicle that much.

Why did the Bionicle trilogy have such fantastic music and sound design? They by ABSOLUTELY no means should have had music and sound design as good as it was. I'm still shocked by it sometimes, honestly. Hell, I can't even call any of the voice actors bad either - a small handful were pretty cheesy, but other than that they were surprisingly competent, some of them are even what I immediately imagine the characters sounding like (like Turaga and Toa Vakama, Toa Kopaka, Toa Matau, and tons others).

Trying to make a series of robots under the theme of them all being lines from the same shady robotics company. These are the first two I have in any sort of state beyond a concept. Left is meant to be a fairly typical robotic super soldier with the main feature being a fold out gun. Right is meant to specialize in crowd suppression and intimidation with two constantly moving shields at the top deflecting incoming projectiles and the massive shield it uses to push crowds back, complete with shock baton

I think the Mistika Kanohi Nuva look fine, it's just that they don't have anything to do with the masks they should represent. Heck the main reason I like the Pakari is because it looks like a redesigned Kraahkan.

This desu. Phantoka masks were wildly different from the Nuva but the characters were still recognizable, Mistika look like entirely different characters with the Nuva name slapped on them. Hell they barely even looked Bionicle

They simply gave a shit and were passionate about their work. Your question could be raised for many aspects of Bonkle. Lots of people did far better work than what you'd expect from a toy series. Templar did much stronger world and character establishing than they could have for what was basically a side assignment Lego had given them. Faber and Swinnerton didn't technically have to go so deep into mysteries and world building, yet they did. The marketing didn't need to be so atmospheric, yet it was. Greg didn't need to be so chatty with fans and write so goddamn much expanded universe stuff (and in retrospect, maybe he shouldn't have), yet he did.
Sometimes, Lego happened to stumble upon the right people who saw more potential in the franchise then Lego themselves did. But sometimes, perhaps even more often, they didn't.

I was looking at the minifigures on the minifigures theme, the ones that come in blind bags and I released it'll be really cool to have something like that for buildable figures. A line of just random and unrelated characters all coming from different settings and have tons of parts to cannibalize.

If that is the case, they did an abysmal job at that. It shouldn't take much to realize after the first wave or two that most people don't want the creepy human faced characters, they want things that fit the build style. Grievous, K-2S0, even the troopers were great. The rest shelfwarmed hard and made the rest of the theme unappealing.
The cancelled Clone and Super Battle Droid should have happened far earlier.

Are the G2 masks just fucked or am I just doing it the wrong way? I wanted to use the Master Gali mask as stand-in for the G1 Mask of Intangibility, like bioniclechicken does for his Tuyet.
But Jesus it's tiny compared to the G1 Kanohi, even next to the Mata ones. A pity because the design is really cool and fits a Water Toa.

They are pretty small compared to G1 masks, but I think Gali’s mask fits ok on a Metru body. A while back I was thinking of making some Toa Mangai, thinking of using Master masks as “Metru” versions of Mata masks, so I put Gali’s on Nuju and it looked fine iirc. Some of those masks like Nokama’s Rau are pretty fuckhuge though so in comparison most things may be too small, I don’t think it’s actually disproportionate though.

I think the saddest thing about Bionicle is the fact that it's got all the potential to be a massive, worldwide phenomenon on the level of Pokemon but Lego's shit marketing and bad development shot the franchise in the foot both times.

Pros:
>Easily recognizable aesthetic
>Fertile grounds for complex but kid-friendly storytelling
>Collectibles
>Plenty of stuff ready for merchandising
>A greater OC making capacity than Sonic, Steven Universe, or MLP thanks to actually being able to build your OC

How Lego squanders it:
>No easy-to-access story material
>Not marketing the story material
>Not airing the story material on a major network
>Not releasing any story material until months or even years after the toys
>Developing and releasing the toys first and figuring the story material out by the seat of their pants
>Letting the media disappear up its own ass, lore-wise
>Not offering easy ways to get useful collectibles (anyone else remember Kanohi Packs getting replaced with Kraata and Zamor Sphere packs?)
>Not offering cheaper sets with useful parts for the essential MOC-making aspect

Bionicle could be a massive multimedia franchise, but Lego's a shit company that doesn't know a damn thing about how to run a merchandise driven franchise beyond producing a few commercials and browser games.

Can't say I disagree. There's tons of "what if" scenarios that could have benefited the brand. On the other hand, had Lego commissioned a TV show for more brand awareness, a bad selection of writers and animation studios could have killed the franchise even faster. Even the movies that got made, which were written with bigger input from Bionicle's own team, managed to fuck up some things and gradually lost their audience.
But I agree that Bionicle lacked a strong direction in both generations, both story and marketing wise. It was a runaway success early on, but it was also so far removed from Lego's normal company image that their management didn't understand what worked about it, how they could have tapped into its storytelling and collecting potential to turn it into an even bigger multimedia brand. Or perhaps they did understand it but they simply didn't want to take risks with it, knowing they were inexperienced at this type of franchise building. That's more like a lucky outlier. Reminder that Lego wanted to cancel Ninjago after a couple years, then scrambled to get it back on track when they realized it's popular. They lucked out with the cartoon crew who know their shit, so they can just leave the writing to them. No other Lego show managed to get that popular, which again tells me Ninjago is a special case.
Except when they decided to make that theatrical film that shat on everything from the cartoon and tanked, but I'm not putting the blame for the movie's failure squarely on Lego, I'm sure there were plenty of dumbasses making stupid decisions at WB too.

something I liked from 2009 was MNs character development, he is entirely a pacifist as a god and didnt want to take action directly within his universe, rather nudging the people to solve their own issues. after seeing the wrong of his actions and learning of the true hardships of life, he does what he needs to do and takes Makuta down even if he never wanted to. then to avoid more conflicts for godly power or even his own corruption as makuta did, just seals himself down in the mask and fucks off to sleep.

I wasn't interested in the set enough to buy it. Like Tuma and Icarax, it was but a shadow of the Bionicle titans of old. But when I think about it there where a number of charming oddities that made it unique to say the least.
For one, it's the only set after 2008 to actually use the Makuta Phantoka torso, and without the Tridax pod.
His color scheme is pretty odd too, I cannot recall another Bionicle or HF set that used black and Mata blue in this way.
But the mask choice will always be the most puzzling. Having the line's main villain reuse a mask from a previous theme is odd by itself, but choosing a mask from 3 years before that wasn't even designed for a villain was something else. I would've excepted something more blatantly evil from modern Lego.

I'm assuming, however, that these oddities were less about designers getting creative and more about them having to reuse spare stock parts from old sets (that would've otherwise collected dust).

As for the character, he was pretty two dimensional and his motivations made no sense. But I appreciate that he wasn't yet another darkness themed Lego villain, veering into antimatter/gravity stuff instead, so there's that at least.

Buy lots of limb pieces in various sizes, especially the smallest ones because they're great for matoran. Preferably in grey or black because you can use them with anything. Get some armor bits in whichever colors you fancy. Don't bother with torso frames; it's much better to build your own torsos.

Bought a big miscellaneous lot on Facebook for 40 quid. It had a Makuta (missing head), Keetongu (Missing staff of light), Takua and Pewku (missing one of the middle orange liftarms), and Takanuva (missing staff, and a couple of liftarms for the bike), plus a few other unimportant incomplete sets and some Lego Racers stuff. Pretty fucking chuffed, I've never had any of these sets before.

Because Makuta was a goat set during 2003 and they made a lot better version of him emphasising the robotics. Spinax also looks genuinely solid and is a fun design, Maxilos would had been goat even without it.

Just finished Takua using the same build, but fixed the hand situation using the ccbs friction extender pieces as forearms. I sort of like how I did Hewkiis though based on a po matoran pohatu type look. Gonna continue building a matoran army, please advise me on how to improve these builds further

Honestly, it depends. Most of the G1 bulk is cheap as dirt, but there are handful of Technic parts and stranger Bonkle bits can get surprisingly costly.

I bought 03 Takanuva's pieces individually because i wasnt interested in the vehicle he crashes in under a minute.. The mask and armor cost the most but it definitely ended up being cheaper than if i bought the set.

You might know this already but bricklink has a "part out" option that finds all the pieces for sale individually. Just be aware that you'll probably end up having to buy from multiple stores to get them all and will have to pay for shipping for each one.

Completely depends on luck. Bricklink I think you'll get the better deals at times, but ebay can have some surprises.

I'd highly recommend local classifieds as well, families get rid of that stuff all of the time, and resellers don't often go for Bionicle.

My guess is that the Komau isn't quite mind control and more heavy influence/authority. Imagine your boss ordering you "print 50 of these" against him saying "Take a gun and kill everyone in this room". You're going to obey the first order of course, but likely refuse to follow the latter.

Now the G2 Mask of Control, that seemed to be straight up mind control, so that one would be immoral. Then again, the Mask of Fusion and Mutation somehow aren't immoral and the Crast is, so I've personally given up trying to understand the logic on this.

As for the Fusion mask it's more of an artificial Kaita generator, so since you're making the other person a part of you they also have control of the fusion as well.

Granted a lot of the Kanohi powers could be considered immoral based on the use of it so it's really just inconsistent

Yes. I grew up with bionicle back when it was still a technic subtheme like throwbots and roboriders. I’m here to tell you that no matter what a bunch of literal zoomers, butthurt over inikas being cut short, will tell you, Mistika and Phantoka are all fantastic except for maybe Gali. Tahu Mistika is my favorite and its my 2nd favorite form of his after the original Mata one.

Also yes, the sockets in 06 are all fragile and there’s real rhyme or reason for it. I’ve got sockets from 98 that still work perfectly without a single fracture yet buying a used 06-10 set is a huge gamble because of those fucking sockets.
