Greetings LG!
Today I've come to bring you a little unboxing - a nostalgia trip back to 1996 and a look at the Aquanauts 1749 Paravane set.

Other than being a nifty little set, it also happens to be the first set I ever received. It was a very exciting and happy experience and I still have a few good memories from that day.

Nostalgia aside, the set is obviously quite weak in the build department even compared to other sets of similar size and pricing.
What it fails to accomplish with its main build though it does somewhat make up with the figure - the complex suit piece and accessories (chromed knives anyone?) mean that this was somewhat a cut above what most figures came with at the time.

Overall, doing away with my own bias and love for this particular set I would have to call it a weak set. It isn't bad, there just isn't enough in the main build to make it work.
Even so, it worked for me and gave me a long lasting curiosity with what's out there beneath the waves.

I've just ordered the largest Aquanauts set - the Neptune Discovery Lab. I'm going to do a small review of it and give you guys a few shots when I get it and actually build it.

The original series (1-3) are far more expensive simply because Lego didn't anticipate the demand for them so they didn't make that many. The following series can have prices vary wildly depending on the demand for each figure.

Lego often puts pieces from earlier waves in their Build-a-Minifig bins at the official Lego stores. I stocked up on Series 1 nurse torsos that way.

As a long time table-top/Lego guy you really only have two options (outside of starting your own group/party/etc):

I've gone to one meeting but I've met a good bunch of the people outside and at a local brickfair. I do plan to attend more, but it's mostly people 40+ obsessed with massive display builds. I'm more niche with bonkle and mecha builds. They've turned their nose up at them before which is laughable, but hey to each their own. I hope other LUGs are better than this.

Semi-related; I picked up the Little Mermaid book set this weekend because I thought I might be able to use the big book shells in my megacity, and also because I wanted some of these microdolls, but what really sold me was seeing this new(ish?) 2x2 sheet music tile on the right. The sheet music on the left is from a Friends set, but had extra printing at the top that I heresy'd off. I really like how this other one has music that goes all the way up.

this is what I fear my LUG is like too. From the local convention it seems that way anyway, and about 70% of them were showing of train layouts with modular buildings, each containing maybe one or two mocs at most. I dont think I'd fit in there. There are some really cool groups in my country, but nothing local...

Kinda depends on exactly what you want to do.
The Creator Expert modular building series is a long-running series of expensive and detailed buildings perfect for any town.
Themes like City and Creator 3-in-1 tend to have some nice buildings you can put in your village, or use as bases to modify and make your own stuff.
If you're going for something more themed, like a medieval village, there's nothing on shelves right now, but you can look at stuff like the 10193 Medieval Market Village for inspiration.
I'd personally say building your own stuff is better, it's always what Lego has been about to me, expressing yourself and doing something of your own.

Disney is in an interesting position with regard to this particular IP. Snow White is extremely popular with their audience, but her very existence is problematic on account of the meaning behind her name. They heavily market her in their theme parks (with the cosplay actresses) but they've almost completely eliminated her from the merch; probably to avoid getting heat from twitter nobodies while also realizing that people willing to pay $300 for a park ticket aren't going to complain about snow white. Outside of the Disney Princess Slumber Party stuff I can't recall seeing her at all lately.

I feel so sorry for poor SnowWhite, she the one that suffers the most from this mad modern era and overall lunacy. Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty also belong to the more passive class of princesses, which means they are also hated by pseudo-feminist crowds, but Snowwhite gets all the hate also because of her name.

Pic related are some of the sets I got as a kid. To this day I cannot find the first set I ever got. All I remember is it came in a big plastic box and it was city themed, it had I believe a gas station, PD, Fire dept and maybe one more building I got it circa 1998-00.

This is explained in the video that shows the factory where the Harry Potter minifigs are being made. All the torsos are on a conveyer belt with an electric eye that detects the black band. If it doesn't see the black band, it shoots a puff of air that knocks the torso off the conveyer belt and back into the bin to be fished out later by the same conveyer belt. This ensures that every torso that makes it to the end of the conveyer belt is facing the correct direction.

CMFs don't have this band because they're produced in more modern factories that have other methods of ensuring the torsos are oriented correctly.

See, my issue is that I have a disney pass and at my local lego store, I am able to get a discount on all lego products because of it. I have been comparing if it would be better to do it off of BL (including shipping and tax) vs doing it directly through the lego store (tax and discount) and I think I would get out better with the lego story, but just marginally.

I kept a word document that noted every bit of Lego I bought monthly and then broken down by store.
I would look something like pic related.

I saw two lego star wars summer sets. They are battle packs, one is a Mustafar battle pack and includes:
>Kylo Ren with hair and cape, I don't think this one appeared in sets.
>A a burned tree, some lava and a box with Sith Wayfinder
>Two First Order Stormtroopers
>One Mustafar alien Sith cultist
Another battle pack is a 501st legion battlepack which includes:
>two 501st legion clone troopers
>a Speeders for them
>a Jedi knight
>a Temple guard (no idea if those were even in revenge of the Sith)
Didn't see any other sets, these were finished. I got to see them thanks to a retailer. I think these battle packs are better than the ones we got this winter.

Except Harry Potter was licensed from WB since the early 2000s, so when the FB movies came out it was easy to pick it back up.
Instead, while the LOTR movies sets were licensed from WB, the new show is being made by Amazon, so if they make Amazon LOTR show sets they would be under a different license than WB LOTR movies sets - basically they'd need two different licenses for the Amazon show and the movie trilogy.

Naboo was kino, but the Starkiller and Mustafar ones used a bunch of detail but had low part counts which made them suck. Actually, the Mustafar one just straight up sucks and really makes me wish we got/will eventually get an $80 Mustafar set that comes with some Separatist leaders, Padme, and maybe even Anakin's green starfighter.
Fan build in pic is pretty close to what I'd want.

I've seen bootlego raptors that are the correct size but I have no interest in bootlego. The small Dilophosaurus from the latest wave of JW sets is the correct scale for a raptor.

There's a new dress piece that's one plate shorter so it's the same height as a standard pair of minifig legs. It also has a more pronounced train in the back that makes it look more like cloth.

Scale modelling has the problem where just adding water doresn't look like how real bodies of water look like. There's a sort of dirtyness and to scale physics you need to emulate and the modelling techniques to achieve that are real in depth. Since Lego looks like a toy no matter how you cut it using real water and having it look kinda fake is probably fine though.

Real water might look okay if you're doing it a couple of ways

Water does not look right in these contexts because water does not behave in scale. It doesn't scale down well, which you can see in live steam locomotive models, where the pipes and sight glasses (Water gauges) are much bigger than scale. either line the sets well and fill the canals with resin, or don't expect it to look like actual scale water. That said, this is a toy, so who cares really?

Low.Jurassic World sets sell very good, that's why we still get sets, also next year the 3rd JW movie releases and there is a jurassic world animated series coming on Netflix so expect more sets. I want to buy them but I just didn't find the designs enough appealing, also I see they fixed the size for dulophodaurus so I'm just waiting for a scale accurate Raptor. Maybe they remake some of the JW and JP sets for 2021. I want a better scale indoraptor, waay to big desu

My dad used to be a taxi driver when that promotion was running, and because he was on the road so much he'd rack up tokens for it super quick. Every week he'd come home early in the morning and leave one of those teensy sets out as a surprise for me and my younger brother to wake up to and build (or if he didn't have one that week he'd make a treasure hunt around the house to sweets/chocolate).
