Yeah, don't get enough toyline crossovers with these threads. Didja spray paint the silver one on the left? I bought a bunch of those mooks for cheap on HLJ awhile back but never got around to building more than one. I was thinking of just spray painting one of 'em in chrome silver.

I've very recently found new interest in these things thanks to a game called ravenfield... (there are mods that can make the game into green v tan army men in giant toy settings) I haven't really cared about these toys since I was maybe... 6 years old?

I was wondering if anyone knows if there are any 'official' brands of these guys on the market, and if there are any sets that sell buildings and jeeps in the flat green vs tan colors that are to scale with them?

Also, when googling a bunch of army men related things, found out there are table top rules available similar to something like warhammer. I've seen two distinct versions too. Realistic ww2 / civil war era simulation battles, and or toy box wars, where house hold items make up obstacles on the battle field. Do you know if anyone does serious / semi serious battles?

I think army men have become "public domain", so it could be anyone. I prefer to get the smallest type though. About 1/70 scale.So they'd scale better with my other toys.

I think the Hasbro Army Men as as close to official as you can get. I usually get the teeny tiny ones that stand about 2cm. So the vehicles that are sometimes provided scale pretty well with those. Though I normally dump the vehicles in favor of my mechs.

Timmee Toys is one of the surviving original brands of army men from, I wanna say the 60's if not earlier. The plastic quality and the mold detail is fantastic for the 5cm figures. And most knock of army men molds can be traced back to their original moldings, which are still in production today. They still maintain and use the original hand made master molds to make their duplicate molds from.

BMC is a close runner up, but they've only been around since the 90's, and they're on par with Timmee, but they didn't need to survive two anti war movements, and a plastic shortage crisis.

Both brands' toys are 100% made in america, and have official ebay and amazon stores so they can ship around the world.

whats nice about army men, is you can very cheaply build two identical armies of apposing colors (green v tan, or what ever colors you fancy) and cost a fraction of what something from like warhammer would cost.

And there are oodles of wargame rulesets out there to choose from, from ww2 perfect simulations, to casual playing in a pile of toys, its really what you want to make of it.

I really wonder if someone could create a solid, easy to understand ruleset that allows any miniatures to play, if it could catch on like warhammer.

The Mass Combat rules section of the D&D Rules Cyclopedia is highly adaptable and covers mass combat and individual heroes.

Probably not, Games Workshop requires you to spend at least a grand on an army for it to meet minimum tournament standards and you better paint every last soldier to perfection too.

this is the main reason I want to see about an army men adaption of warhammer style rule book, some of the prices of figures seems like they're over priced just for the sake of it. Plus I think army men have more wide spread appeal.

Methinks the wargaming communities by and large are too snobbish to accept army men into their circles. Army men invite more imaginative play (living rooms are battlefields, household items are forts and front lines), while wargaming setups go all out with realism (terrain, detailed miniatures, combat effects). I'm not saying there can't be common ground and crossing over; as an anon mentioned earlier there's quite a few rulesets out there to wargame with army men. I have both volumes of Combat Storm myself, but sadly have had little use out of them.

I've actually been looking to find a cheap cargo version, cause I was wondering if it's too heavy to convert into an rc model. Some would say so, but I think if you put a strong spar across the length of the wing, and put a couple super charged brushless motors on the wings, and get the thing moving fast enough, it probably could fly. I'd cut out the control surfaces as they are indicated in the mold lines, find and unobstructive place for the servos, and I think it could be made to open the cargo door and drop paratroops.

Going a little bit out on a wing here but I'm not sure the plastic Herc is flight-capable. Aerodynamic issues aside, the plastic is susceptible to warping (the wings on mine aren't quite straight) and very likely couldn't sustain the weight of the motors. The wheels would also need modifying as they wouldn't be able to roll fast enough for a take-off, and the rear ramp design isn't very conducive to your proposed idea. Honestly you'd be better off building one from scratch, though I will admit the idea is intriguing.

I'm suddenly getting flashbacks and I'm not sure if I had one, or someone else, but I distinctly remember playing with a tan one of these, when I was either, in preschool or kindergarten, it just came to my mind because the props all had the same white stress marks that one has.

Although, I remember the props being black plastic, but I don't know if that's warped memory or not.

It is really nice knowing that the company that makes it never stopped making them.

The guy behind the Plastic Apocalypse videos showed off his collection once, which included a rare tan cargo Herc. The props on it were tan, but it's possible there were variants.

Talking about these has reminded me of the big aircraft carrier I had as a kid, had to look it up and it turns out they were also made by Tim Mee. Really regret not having it any more, though it was battered to hell by the time I finally discarded it. Still have the two jets and a few of the figures that came with it.

Timmee has started making discontinued molds of the Dominator and other large vehicles, I'm sure if there's enough demand, or, if your offer them a pretty penny, the could print a few new copies. From what I understand the original master molds are all kept, and can be put back into production if they see enough demand in the market.

Indeed, but most of the time these days those 40 troops are pretty poor, quality-wise and pose-wise. Lots of flashing, brittle plastic, broken-off weapons and limbs, few to no accessories or vehicles... For me, pic related remains something of a gold standard for army men packages: at least two armies, tanks, trucks, jeeps, aircraft, cannons, sandbag walls, barbed wire, flags (this set has the added bonus of naval craft and scuba divers).

This, they're oddly toxic about playing with their toys.

I think it would be great to make army men tournaments with the big prize pots like they have with other table top games and make it so any army of miniatures can compete, making it so armies of equal numbers of units stand a fair chance at winning, regardless if you spent 20$ or 20K on your army.

Here's what I got so far. Since I already had the paint and the brushes , but I've never painted miniatures before and didn't want to spend real money on something to start with I went to the dollar store and picked up a couple of bags of army men, half beige troops/half green troops. 50 men for $1 can't beat that price.
I soaked them in water with dish soap, then scrubbed them with a brush which revealed a surprising amount of detail considering how shitty and cheap they are.
I'm going too do them in small batches, I picked out 6 appropriate characters for my initial project and I'm working out a good story for them. I want my military painted miniatures to have more of a fantastical G.I. Joe flavor so I've got some fun plans.
More to come.

I put down a quick base layer for these guys, my shitty camera doesn't do it justice at all so it may be hard to pick out the different skin tones for the thugs.
The story is the 4 dark gentlemen are Congolese soldiers assigned to the 2 Chinese PLA representatives in the back and they are guarding a covert Chinese gold mine in some African shithole country.
It looks brighter in the photo than it does to the naked eye, but I will also tone it down a bit after I put down some glazes and shit.

That's next on the list of things to do, I'm trying to do what I can with these little guys but they're only an inch and a half tall. I'm sure I can get a decent level of detail on them though, a couple of thin washes and then some detail paint work should do the trick, then I'm going to varnish with my matte medium.

might be just how tiny they are, in person they'll look fine, but up close they look like playdough. I'd say try again with 2 inch figures, cause I know how hard it is getting a fine enough brush to do detailing work, but for a practice run, these look pretty neat. Maybe go over their vest pockets with a warm brown, make them look like leather, see if that makes them pop.

I'm using my 10/0 zen liner brush for everything, I'll try what you suggest with the pockets. Once I put in some shadows/highlights/eyes/mouths/etc it should turn out alright, especially for a first ever attempt.

For the PLA guys I am using much thinner paint and more layers for my base so it should come out a little better. I'm going to need to pick up some metallic paint now though to finish, because the head Chinese guy, he's obsessed with gold, so his gun, helmet, buckles, etc are all going to be metallic gold, plus his uniform is a gold colored fabric.

I didn't get much done and Goldman is still wet but I am having a lot of fun just fucking around. Goldman, the leader of the group, is obviously obsessed with Gold and his shoes, gun, helmet, and buckles will all be metallic gold.

The crouching gentlemen are the Hogan twins, Terry and Randy. Terry uses the shotgun and Randy uses the rifle. They wear shamrock green helmets to pay homage to their Irish heritage.
The metallic man in the center is Silverdome. Greg Silver, a cop from Pontiac, MI was mortally wounded saving some merchants from being attacked by a wild pack of urban thugs. In a bid to save some aspect of his life, the Detroit PD Future Tech dept. was able to successfully transfer Silver's soul and psyche into a new V5 liquid metal robot cop model.
Not much is currently known about the leader of the group standing in back.

Yeah, I am going to change how I do it. Thinner paint and more layers for the base I find makes it look better so I want to make the base as solid as I can, then gloss varnish it, then do any washes to prevent marks and blotches, then paint on flags and logos and whatever.
Also I am amassing styrofoam so I can start making my own scenery as well.

The good guys are on the scene and the dastardly villains are penned inside of a blown out building. Not a lot of sleep on the flight over has made for a cranky set of Hogan twins, will they leave any survivors?

I figured since I was learning how to paint minis I would also teach myself how to make scenery. I chopped up a spare piece of styrofoam with a craft knife, without bothering to measure or use straight lines whatever. I put on a black prime layer and then hit it with an admittedly heavy amount of white for highlights. It'll come out in the next painting stage anyway.

Thanks bro. I'm actually pleased with the cobble effect given by the cheap styrofoam I used. I literally just chopped up part of one of the packing pieces that came with a panini press.

Posting this in this thread seemed more appropriate than making an entirely new thread by itself, but I apologize if it isn't: is anyone else really into these and collecting them? They're been around as long as plastic army men it seems, and I love how if you really search, there are more than one plane for each country/power. They don't fly for shit but I've always thought they're so cool to just have and display, especially with the paper envelope packaging displayed behind the glider.

First up is the Walmart set, the first army men I've seen there in years. It's a pretty decent set, using Desert Storm poses I've seen before but can't remember off-hand whose they are originally. There's a nice pile of accessories, from classic sandbag walls to a trio of tripod-mounted weapons (minigun, TOW launcher and what I think was originally a mortar, modified to be a recoilless rifle or something). The pose assortment is also quite good, there's almost no doubles.

On to the smaller Soldier Force box. Found these at TRU before I knew the larger set existed; managed to track those down at another TRU across town. When compared to its bigger brother, this set is certainly lacking in that it only has one army. Still, it stands up fairly well on its own with the quality of the soldiers, 8 different poses with uniform distribution.

The men up close, definitely intended to be modern/near-future infantry, with a hilariously anachronistic potato masher grenade in one guy's hand. A neat detail on the binoculars guy is that he has a rifle strapped to his chest: compare that to older binoculars poses where the trooper is apparently unarmed.

All three armies are very distinct from each other, something of a novelty among the cloned, recloned and recopied dollar store fodder we've been used to of late. The Soldier Force guys are slightly smaller than the other two, but not drastically so.

Last but not least, the vehicles of the Soldier Force and Corps Elite. On this point they're definitely the most similar, with each set providing a tank, fighter jet and attack helicopter (Corps Elite ups the ante a bit with a combat mech). From a distance, the jets and copters certainly look like someone copied the other. Up close, significant differences become more apparent. The Corps Elite jet is inspired by the F-22 Raptor, while the Soldier Force jet has its origins in the F-35 Lightning II. The copters are the same story; CE's is based on the RAH-66 Comanche, SF's on the AH-1 Cobra.

This has been a fun and surprising exercise, until now these sets have all sat idle since I first picked them up. I'd love to get that Elite Force Battle Group set the anon shared here >>7980550 for additional comparisons, we'll see if I can make it happen.

Yeah I definitely think there's some uh, "creative influence" happening between this set and the Elite Force one. See pic related, but the binocs guy and mortar look like straight copies, and the others have a lot of similarities as well in terms of body armor/helmets/posing.

Yeah I can definitely see similarities, the binoculars guys for sure are just about identical. The mortar guys are more distinct; top row second from right looks like the Soldier Force grenadier with modified gun and different/no grenade. Pic is my previous experience with the Desert Storm poses from the Walmart set, with a bazooka pose that wasn't included in the latter.

So I went ahead and ordered a couple buckets of the Elite Force Battle Group, paid more than i'd have liked but we should have some side-by-sides in a couple weeks or so, heh.

These guys are smaller than I'd imagined. The container came with that large conical cardboard insert; without it the canister is barely half-full, feels like a bit of a rip-off considering what I paid, heh. Other than that they're a great army, ten different poses and a (mostly) fixed distribution. For some reason the crawling poses had uneven representation, while the rest have four apiece. I really love that helicopter, always been a sucker for them and it's an unusual type for army men.

The TRU canister surprised me with a couple things. The included terrain pieces were pretty nice, particularly those boulders that are pretty uncommon. The barbed wire baffled me a bit, first I thought they were broken in half but they're that size by design, never seen that before.

Regarding the men, they're all the by now well-known remade Timmee Vietnam-era army men, with a randomized assortment of poses that's pretty typical of these guys. Unfortunately for this lot, one of the cons to randomized assortment resulted in neither the green nor tan having at least one of each pose. In fact, there's a pose that's missing entirely from this group (the standing soldier with rifle in one hand, grenade in the other; had to retrieve one from my reserves for the upcoming comparison pics).

The binoculars guys of these two armies in particular came in for attention before, so I had to get a shot of them together. They're definitely similar enough to wonder whether one was inspired by the other, but looking closer you can see several details that are distinct to each trooper.

Finally, the three jets, and a correction from the first round of photos. I originally indicated that the green jet was inspired by the F-22 Raptor; further consideration would suggest that its more of an amalgamation of a few aircraft (alongside the F-22 one can also discern some YF-23 Black Widow and possibly MiG-29 Fulcrum in its parentage).

I wonder if we could convince Timmee or BMC to make sets for beginner level table top wargame and include a rule sheet. I think it could make army men toys a popular fad toy if it was really easy to get play and was available at major toy stores. To my knowledge, most people don't buy army men to wargame; they buy army men to have glorious setups and battles with dinosaurs, transformers, giant bugs and cats. Not sure that trying to tack that on will do anything to reinvigorate interest when those who do like having rules for playing with their soldiers will make up their own or use one of the many systems already out there.

The AT-AT and AT-ST are my brother's, from the Star Wars Miniatures line by Wizards of the Coast, not cheap to come by these days unfortunately. The castle is made up of three Siege games (think it went by Weapons & Warriors in the US). Patrician choice, it's what I would have gone for. Okay, so I'm still going to think it over a few days because I have a ridiculous amount of stuff to get done, but I'm 50% sold on the idea if we can agree to these ground rules:

1. No modification, just strictly paint (If I have spare decals, I'll use those)
2. The soldiers will be a sample of poses, not the whole bag.
3. I'll do what I can with them, but given what's there to work with they might still look janky as hell.
4. This might take some time, possibly a couple of months, given that I have paid work that must meet deadline

if you go for timmee or bmc, you will get the highest detail for toy grade amy men, hands down, timmee are a little cheaper, but they only produce generic american soldiers, while bmc has more molds to choose from as well as standing structures and buildings if you want to simulate a destroyed town, but they both have amazing fine detail on their soldier molds

I thought BMC sounded familiar. A local hobby shop (that's been closed for 15 years now) sold BMC sets. I always wanted this D-Day set but it was $100 at the time. They sold the troop packs and some of the accessories individually as well so I have pretty much everything but the buildings, bunkers and sandbags.

My friend got the Iwo Jima set for his birthday and I was super jealous of him. Damn this brings back memories.

Scope Dog is from a candy toy series from, I wanna say Banpresto. I think there were just a couple waves though. They were 3 inch tall, yet highly articulated figures of various mecha.

There's been sets of divers that come with one-man minisubs and human torpedo subs, as well as rafts and landing craft. There's also been a gunboat but I have no idea who made it or how to get them, mine came from a flea market forever ago (sorry for fuzzy pic, 11 years ago with a sucky camera and I'm not sure where they're at to take a fresh one).

They're around 1/72 scale, not terribly common for cheap army men but certainly for wargaming. A lot of the more well-known armies were originally 1/72 that have been scaled up. most notably the WW2 paras that are everywhere. Found these little guys at a dollar store years ago, Russians, Aussies and Japanese with a normal-sized trooper and quarter for scale.

My bad, Germans not Russians. I have some Russians at that scale too but not at hand. here's another bunch of little army men I picked up a couple years ago, was more interested in the aircraft and accessories but they're a neat little group, four different colors and a crazy mix of different armies together.

I love the 1/72. They're the only scale I try to get for my army men, since they scale well with my robot toys like TFs, Gundam, Ultramen, Mecha Kaiju etc. Even if the scaling isn't perfect, it's better than nothing or the ridiculous prices of official minis.

I 'd love to find more variety though. Only variety I have are a handful of these slightly larger sci-fi types and a bag of RISK pieces. Your various nation guys look neato.

Oh shit, I just bought a bag of 20 of these guys in Australia last week. Are they larger in size, like 1:35 scale?
I'm currently clipping all the heads off to replace them with gasmask resin heads to make a COBRA like unit of bad guys I'm going to paint u p in gaudy colours.
I've got 1:35 scale spec ops dudes in the mail to play the part of big name personalities/good guys.
My bag didn't come with any accessories, plastic toy soldiers are incredibly rare here in Oz, usually very flat and of poor quality, not worth the two dollars you pay for them. I was happy to pay $3 for these much better sculpts.

Some size comparisons here >>7995617. They're approximately 1/35, a little on the smaller side compared to other armies but not terribly so. My sympathies for the poor plastic soldier situation there, here's some "Diggers" to make up for it (who rightfully should be in every store in the land eh).

Those are some very nicely painted Afrika Korps dudes. Wish I could think of somewhere off-hand that you could get some, Toy Soldiers Depot used to have them but they've been out of stock for a while. Good call on avoiding Chinese sources, the ones I've seen on Ali look like they came from well-used molds.

they have to be the same overall dimensions. Warhammer uses sight lines and cover as a mechanic so there are cases of older versions of the same unit no longer being allowed to play in local games because the new version is bigger by a small percentage. GW's official decree is they are still legal, but there are many local shops where the community there just gets too butthurt over things like the pre-5th edition necron wraiths being able to fit perfectly in the official modular building terrain while the plastic one stick out.

It makes some sense really, but in general I think the shops just impose blanket rules to avoid the potential drama

Done a little kitbashing like in your pic, all very amateur and half-assed really. Got several of these older army men that originally had separate weapons, long vanished before entering my possession so I attempted to re-equip them. Had a pile of awful quality soldiers I'd acquired en masse for some reason and a few of them became a source for guns. Managed to find them, here they are in all their terrible glory. Most or all could be greatly improved with a little painting and stuff but I just haven't bothered. Some guys needed stands, others merely the end of a broken-off rifle. A few of those empty-handed guys got stuck with Playmobil or other random weapons.

Thinking a bit more on this guy, the very set of soldiers he's from has some kitbashes itself. Its origins are pretty obvious (Timmee Vietnam War troops) but they swapped around a few of the poses to differentiate and create a couple new ones. Thor (RIP) did a page on them here:

Too many different sources to remember, heh. I've been collecting since I was a kid; the anti-tank gun with the Union Jack on it at the very top came in one of my very first sets of army men. Several came from Toy Soldiers Depot, though most are no longer available there. Others from another online source I can't recall, the rest over time from various sets and flea market finds. The Playmobil field gun is probably the oldest of the lot, had it since I was 5 I think.
