I definitely preferred the first "generation" over the Golden City arc for the mecha designs (though the Claw Crusher and Cyclone Defender were pretty cool) and I never had any of the jungle arc sets. IIRC the theme had input from Shoji Kawamori, which was awesome.
A shame some of the sets were a little flimsy, I found some of the parts tended to fall off quite easily and the light feature often caused the torsos to spring apart.
