I know a lot of collectors aren't into the new "electronic future" that some toys are starting to head towards. But they are putting out some beautiful models with great graphics and paint.

So even if you aren't fully hopping aboard the new wave of products, there's at least something you can find in this set that appeals to you.

Ok, I'm fairly new to this but I guess you would be the people to ask.

Short intro, I'm more interested in the geek culture collections rather than the regular cars. Got interested when I impulse bought a few hundred dollars worth of Star Wars ships (and cars from a few other franchises) when Toys Are Us closed. Picked up a few things since then but now I want to get a little more serious. So I am looking for a site that has a comprehensive list of all Hot Wheels. Now I did check out the link to the wiki in OPs post. Its actually pretty good. But within only 5 minutes of exploring I discovered it's not complete. No matter what I put in the search bar the 2016 Star Wars Bounty Hunter wouldn't come up. Now the main thing I am looking for is to.make checklist of what I have and what I want. But I also want to find series I didn't know existed. So a more complete listing would be helpfull.

So are their any other sites whose cataloged might be a little more complete?

Just focusing on the star wars cars is going to be a bit harder to find info for. There are probably personal project checklists out there, but you may have to dig thru sites like reddit or the like.

Star Wars or not, character cars tend to be mostly hit or miss.
There are a few exceptions like pic related that I can say that I like.
I prefer carships and star wars themed regular cars (Like that Enforcer painted as an X-Wing or said 2016 Bounty Hunter line).

A fantasy car is any car that isn't based on real world automobile. Most collectors don't give a shit about them, so they don't put a lot of effort into cataloging them or going into the stores and pulling them off the pegs.

Most fantasy cars are only good as flashbangs or custom bait. You either throw them to little kids when they try to get their grubby little mitts on your daddy redlines or you bust them open for wheels or engine parts to frankenstein custom builds.

So a lot of these things just aren't on the radar for most people unless there's a very specific part that's unique to that car that's good for something else.

OHHH you mean the Walmart sets that are hot wheels models with Star Wars designs printed on them!
Shoot there are so many sets like that made for Walmart (not just Star Wars) that I dunno how they keep track of them. Anyway here is the best one ever made

Yeah, it's kind of a hassle that the wiki doesn't seem to includes information on separate packs. You have to go to a specific car's page in order to see what packs it's been included in.

Luckily in the case of character cars, you can just search the character in question in order to find them.

Like how to sort through them? Bring a cart. Even if you don't expect to find a bin. Bring one.

You can use brickseek to check if the store's hot wheels inventory has suddenly spiked by 6 or 8 cases. That means a dump bin for sure.

For those interested, this was a japan exclusive collaboration between Mattel and Bandai to make some weird character cars. The line is called charawheels, and (until the upcoming model releases) its the only way to get a hot wheels mazda cosmo, pic related

First ever actual restoration, of a Rapid Response. Sadly with just glue since metal bottom plastic body, and my drill bit breaking inside the actual car I wanted to restore, perfectly ruining that attempt.

But this turned out real nice, the body was covered in old gum and everything was somewhat dirty, but it came off nice and managed to polish the clear plastic enough with toothpaste. Wheels were beyond saving due to being bend and rusted, but had some wheels in the correct enough size. I really like this car, especially the huge clear dome on the back

Only just discovered these threads on /toy/, thought me and my brother were the only autistic 20s car guys who love collecting hot wheels. Pic related is my collection, I even managed to infect my fiance with our autism, which is why she started buying me my favorite euro cars, which are Porsches.
Also it's a pretty expensive hobby for what it is, basic hot wheels cost around $4 in my country which I'd consider fucking crazy for cheap diecasts. Special editions are cheap compared to the base ones though as they only cost around $1-2 more.

The HW ae86 casting has very small windows and a low roof in proportion to the rest of the car which for the most part is okay

As a customizer I do the majority of my work with Mattel cars because the annual hot wheel convention in El Segundo only allows you to enter HWs into the custom contest, which is no surprise since Mattel runs the show.

So that generally means, if I'm buying a non-hot wheels car, then its strictly for me. I'm not selling it or competing with it. So if it's only for my satisfaction, I want the nicest toy car my money buys.

Which isn't JL. Compared to M2s and Greenlights, JL doesn't have the level of detail or scale correctness that other deluxe toy car manufacturers have, but they cost just as much. a $7 JL car is pretty much exactly the same as one of the $5 collector metal/metal real rider hot wheels.

Meanwhile, every $7 M2 and Greenlight car is tricked out to the dick with details, and everything opens and closes, and they're built with screws so they disassemble without destroying the car.

For my money, JLs are shit. They're just more expensive hot wheels. The M2s and Greenlights are just better toy cars.

Sometimes I think simpler is better. M2 and GL have a lot of fiddly parts which make for inconsistent quality control. But I think that because I'm more of a toy car collector, rather than a scale car collector.

I think Auto World beats them both hands down. If you want foreign makes, there's also stuff like Schuco and Mini GT (other makes like Kyosho count but I don't really have any of them) and if money is no object, there's always TLV.

I just found out that the original Twin Mill had 2 castings (not the pre-production cut-fender casting either)

PRODUCTION had two castings, and I cannot figure out what's going on with them or why they are different or if one replaced the other or what is happening.

I bought these two (antifreeze and blue) from the internet this week, both from the same seller who had a ton of cars from all eras.

The frame around the base of the windshield has a bodyline on the blue car's casting.

The registered trademark and copyright logo are mis-stamped on the blue one with a bodyline.

None of the remakes have a bodyline. This makes me think the earliest Twin Mill cars were retooled. But here's the kicker...

The pre-production cars with cut fenders that are the "earliest" cars have the copyright and trademark logo on the bottom stamped in the same place as the later cars!

So what the actual fuck here, clearly it has been retooled but nobody anywhere has ever mentioned this difference in any book I've read or any post I've seen and I just noticed it today after looking at redlines my entire life.

Also the original run of Twinmill cars had painted taillights!

Both of these cars are stamped 1968 USA, with painted lights, so they both seem to be original one, leading me to believe the car was retooled mid-year.

If you didn't see my other posts in this thread, that one is the version without a ridge on the base of the windshield, meaning it isn't an early production car.

You can get new wheels on ebay, and molotow markers will make those engines look like chrome (don't touch it though)

drill out the base and strip the paint with airplane stripper. dip the windows in pledge future.

polish the metal until it's shiny and paint it with transparent paint.

Dirty yellow as a base, thin red on top for a rusty kind of an orange, then let it dry and used the water + salt crystals and then painted over it, allowed it to dry enough and then brushed the salt off

That GT40 is from Auto World Premium Series Release 4 (bottom of the card). Release 4 had a GT40 casting, and there was a Version A and Version B colorway. That is the Version B colorway.

Only game in town that had hot wheels was a boutique toy store in a mall, the kind that had premium baby toy shit for yuppy kids. At least in Vietnam, Hot Wheels was considered a premium brand so these were the kind of shops you found them in. They were all roughly the equivalent of 2 bucks each, which is like getting kicked in the dick when you go to buy one in a liquor store or a grocery store and they have them marked up.

I still bought because they had me by the balls, but my advice is this- Hold out as long as possible, because a sale will come.

In America, hot wheels are always cheap and shit never goes on sale unless its black friday or some shit.

But in the rest of the world, retailers purge inventory with sales way more frequently. They're not as averse to cutting into their margin just to make a sale as big box US retailers are. They'll crack eventually.

Know that feel. For some reason the one near me seems to have staff who come across as holier than thou know it alls. Which in most cases, is probably true! Most of the public knows fuck all about cars!

I wish Majorette's daily drivers were smaller than 1:55. Otherwise they sit well with most other brands.

The A110-50 is a favorite just for the sheer amount of tampos not many would put on a car of its price range nowadays. Also, there are child-unfriendly side mirrors.

The Dacia is also nice. It came with a Matchbox-compatible flatbed trailer.

Good point, but I still think muscle tone has sharper, straighter lines, which we didn’t really see until the challenger and mustang pretty much 10 years later. Just my opinion though
