I never went to Botcon, but I did sign up for the fan club for the first year. Where the first toy ever was the Energon A10 mold made out of jolly rancher. It was... adequate but I was more interested in the neat articles about the history of the brand or obscure novelties than I was the comics that were up their own ass (and only would get worse as time went on, I'd learn).

Later signed up again to buy the Punch Cooterpunt. Dion was a nice deco on a bad toy, and Brunt Koalamunch was infamous because they never showed the real toy prior to release so everyone got their shit FunPub'd up.

This is probably not going to be an "official" convention, which is probably a good thing. Hopefully this is a smaller , fan oriented convention again. I'm not sure if modern hasbro will ever put as much into exclusive sets like they did in the past, at least not so soon. At best we may get some early releases or alternate paint decos on retail stuff. Fan conventions have also become a lot more about 3P figures and I doubt Hasbro will want to promote too much at shows like that.

A convention isn’t just exclusive figures. Cons are good for meting people with the same interest, being able to meet people involved in the franchise, doing activities that you couldn’t otherwise do(like screenings of the 86 movie in a theater setting), and pick up older figures without dealing with the usual resale bullshit( vendors who are fans looking to offload material know that loose late G1 or Non-show beast Wars character isn’t going to sell for $100 and you can rack up some great deals). The exclusives are just a bonus.

When the Hartmans ran this convention ( and they’re the ones that are bringing it back) we only got one or two figures and they weren’t crucial additions, just neat bonus guys for the TFU.

Botcon not backed by hasbro and is being run by infidels

It’s literally 109% unofficial and run by the same fucks who couldn’t get their shit together. Notice they’re using the old RID font because they can’t legally use the proper Generations font.

It also has no sanctioned Hasbro exclusives and will be relying on third party.

Expect a shit show, expect lawsuits. Notice how Transformers is absent from the convention title? They’re in deep shit if they present themselves as official Hasbro

The difference is, those Macross designs are made to be transformable mecha from the beginning. The design aesthetics are different, macross robot modes don’t need to have specific mecha freebies on them, they just use jet bits.

That WAS the plan, but it changed over time to be story driven. Retailers don't like it either, since there is no mass media tie ins. (No, IDW and Machinama didn't count. No one knows they even exist.) After WFC, there are plans to make Generations more like Marvel Legends, PR Lightning and SW Black, mixing cartoon, movies and TV in each wave, with specific themed waves when needed. This also let's them slip in toys from obscure media like they do with Marvel and SW and now Power Rangers.

The best part is they're one of the more entertaining bits from the show, and while BW II has it's highlights, most of the time nothing significant happens and the cast barely develops. Hell, some of the biggest development (and best fights) happens in the movie that's not canon to the show.

I can understand where you're coming from, I feel like it's a double edged sword.
With screws they are super obvious and can look ugly but they are easier to tighten/loosen. Meanwhile pins aren't as obtrusive but make it much harder to modify the figure.

I once saw a tfw mod at toy's r us. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be weird and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.

When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen beast hunters abominus figures in his hands without paying. The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.

When she took one of the figures and started carelessly scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each carefully “to prevent any damage that could lower the item's resale value,” and then he turned around and winked at me. While she scanned each figure individually and put it in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

Yeah I've definitely had problems with figures. The most recent one was MP-10V. He didn't break but I had him in a container during a long ass road trip and the car crashed and the waist loosened up and the leg ended up getting weak. All I needed to do to fix it was unscrew the waist, regrease the leg ratchets for good measure and screw the waist back together easy as that. Any time I got any figure with problems such as tight/loose joints or things not going where they should could be very easily fixed with screwing and unscrewing. You can't even do that now since they don't even use the smaller screws they used to have either.

It's especially bad when you want to fix the shitty white plastic on Apeface without it spilling over.

You can easily loosen an overtightened screw without fucking up the plastic. I've done it, everyone has done it. Also it's not the factory chinks that come up with what goes where they just make the figure so this one is completely on the designers.

No equivalent in Macross
On top of that, the Jets are designed with robot transformation in mind. A lot of tfs are real world vehicles.

Been watching more Beast Wars (as if anyone cares), I'm like halfway through season 1 now. Still really enjoying it, I'm getting attached to the characters now.
I'm liking the Predacons, they feel like a group of criminals rather than a army like with the Decepticons (and Megatron gives me a Hans Gruber vibe). Waspinator and Megatron are my favourites but I enjoy Terrorsaur being a even worse Starscream (nobody ever takes his overthrowing of Megatron seriously) and I like his robot design. The weakest link imo is Scorponok, he doesn't have much going for him other than being a dumb brute.
On the other hand I think the Maxmimals are all solid characters. Dinobots is my favourite, I like how his character has progressed and his relationships with Optimus and Rattrap are highlights.
Cheetor is a big dork, he always makes me laugh with his dumb slang "ultra gear" "lamers!" "Mega-dumb".
Rhinox feels OP, three episodes in a row he's beaten the shit out of Megatron.
And finally Optimus Primal is a big hero, the battle when the Axalon is taking off actually made me feel something, I can see why people are drawn to the character.
Anyway enough blogposting, to keep this /toy/ related, is the Generations Waspintor mold good? I want to track one down eventually.

Yes, but I also think every BW Waspinator mold is good. I like the original just fine, his bug mode has some flaws but most 90s Beast modes do, and the Transmetal as well is cool to me.

It's not AS show accurate though. Works for me, but it's not as good as the Generations one for show accuracy. I have both but personally prefer the old one just cause my nostalgia for Beast Wars lies more in the toys themselves, but if show accuracy is what you're aiming for the Generations one is pretty great.

I like all the Beast Wars toyline and the Japanese stuff but goddamn if the Beast Machines toys and show aren't a fucking nightmare to look at. I get that they were going for "more organic designs" but most characters just look like so unappealing, especially ones like Cheetor and Silverbolt. It overall feels like it's a massive downgrade from the Beast Wars especially when it comes to toys.

I mean Beast Wars has possibly the most self contained and specific fandom of any Transformers series aside from shit that only came out in Japan. If you're not in your late 20s-mid 30s chances are you have no nostalgia for it, as unlike G1 it was never reran in any modern time and has been largely left to rot as a piece of fiction, and has nothing really to do aesthetically or character wise with any modern iteration of Transformers for the most part that would make fans of new series want to go back and check it out, outside of the odd Beast Wars reference here or there. Pretty much the only people (generally speaking, of course, exceptions to every rule) who care about Beast Wars are the people who experienced it as a kid.

I liked his general design a lot, it's just a shame he's so floppy and fiddly in robot mode, was hard to play with as a kid let alone just stand up or display also thanks to his weird proportions.

Him and TM2 Prowl were both annoying to me in that way, very cool looking aesthetics, but just were hard to even play with.

The mold looks like it has potential, but it's a shame the truck mode has so little ground clearance. Probably a concession for the transformation, but oh well. I'll wait and see of the potential Artfire repaint looks better, because Artfire makes everything better. I really hope it's not cancelled. I haven't cared about recent Generations figures since I didn't grow up with G1 and a lot of them are characters I don't even know about. Doesn't help a lot of the late G1 characters have some really ugly color schemes. It would be nice to have a fully combining Armada Prime with actual articulation. My love for super robots desires it.

On the other hand, Amiami was way too good to me, several new figures had issues or a breakage, but they'd send me new parts or almost an entire toy to replace it, not even asking for a return.
