I'll wait until I get them in hand, but I think the current size cube is pretty perfect. Stuff that unfolds a lot like the spider and bird are surprisingly big, it's just the chunky ones like the hippo that seem small because they don't do all that much.

Don't the crabs come in pairs? They've been only shown in pairs so far and I was under impression that two of them combine into one complete cube. It's easy to assume that's the case when they're so thin and look like they form only one half of a cube each.

Baby, this just don't look like a shark. I think a good shark could totally be made from a cube, but this just ain't it. Not only are the proportions really bizarre, but there are really rudimentary things wrong, like snout shape, fin placement and size, and wtf is up with that tail? I wasn't really enthused by Darknet's design or colors, and I am fucking terrified of spiders so I thought this would be an easy pass for me. But the steel wire hanging feature kind of sold me, shit seemed so fun. And I was surprised to find that he became one of my very favorite figures before long. He's just so much fun with all those legs to work with.

It's not that I would actually be scared of the toy. It's that my arachnophobia is so extreme that I never developed any sort of affinity even for cool/cute interpretations of spiders. So basically, I had zero interest in it. I took a chance because the wire feature seemed fun and I already had a Taobao order going, and it turned out to be a fantastic toy.

Corona generally can't live long enough on surfaces to be a problem in the mail. coming across the ocean on a boat is definitely long enough for it to die, mostly the only thing you'd have to worry about if if your mail carrier has it. They're charming, have some pretty clever engineering, and are the kind of thing that makes a good desk toy to idly play around with. They're underwhelming if you're the kind of collector who needs double-jointed everything and/or is extremely attached to licensed characters, but they're great toys in the sense that they're fun to mess with and make you smile.

Only Dios are small really. After that they moved to a larger format, and depending on the design, they can get pretty decently sized in bot mode.

Also, I was in your shoes once. I thought they were kinda cute, but didn't get the hype. I had to actually try one out to fall in love. Now I've been buying every release. They're really adorable and expressive, they're pleasing to transform and pose, and there's something really interesting about seeing how many different robot modes they can wrangle out of one single shape. It's almost like a challenge game where the conditions are your altmode must be a cube--what are you going to do to innovate within those boundaries?

Didn't they sell Sonicripple at all their con appearances last year? It gave off the impression of "we just made X number of these things and we're gonna bring them to every con we attend until they run out." Trident should have be a better mold for a shark. The shape would be more acurate. The mass of the claw can be shift to the head making a slightly bigger head+jaws,or a hammerhead gimmick. Even a sawshark head would be possible. C'mon Stryker, you can do better BBs.

And I bought a Dio recently (helldiver version, because I like the colors) and I think I see what you guys were talking about. The articulation is somewhat lacking in a lot of ways, but you can manage a lot of expressiveness out of relatively little in terms of movement. Still wish the legs had a better spread and could shift forward and back further, but I'm happy overall.

I've already been looking into the others in the line, just to see what they have. Many of them look fairly limited, like the elephants, hippos, rhinos, etc. However, some look like they could be pretty posable. Here's the list I compiled, would appreciate any feedback anyone has about these models, their pros and cons, etc.

Jojo (gorilla)
Trident (Lobster)
Alien
Bigpower (panda)
Alien Queen
Eroris (spider)
Ironclaw (Crab)
And maybe whatever the pictured thing is.

Trident, the Alien, and the spiders are a lot more posable than the Dio variants. Jojo and Bigpower too, but maybe not to the same extent. The Dio variants have some first-iteration weirdness; the later releases are bigger, come with little cases, and offer more complex transformations. Personally, I really recommend any of the parrots, they’re probably the most posable of the current releases and are still pretty easy to find. The crabs and Alien Queen aren’t out yet, so we won’t know what to expect for a little bit, but both look promising.

Dios are cute, but yeah, they're the smallest and most primitive mold. I would say the most impressive ones in the whole line (at least for me) are the Lobster and the Bird. Both have a lot of poseability and personality. The others on your list are all good too though. Aside from the crab, it looks good but it's not out yet so nobody knows how it is yet.

Proxy. They won't ship outside of China. You can always just be patient and wait for them to hit the Japanese and US shops. I mean, time is the main variable here, cause you'll end up paying virtually the same price either way (Tmall price is a little cheaper but you need to pay for middleman service, US/Japan webshop price gets hiked a little but you can buy direct).

You know what would be really good? If the Dio's (and other beasts like it) eyes were on a swivel. Right now their eyes are kind of locked in this angry scowl, but if you could just rotate it, you could shift where the eyelid is, letting you change his emotion even more.

Its part of why I like the ghost dog version more than the normal Dio, since its lack of eyes lets you actually impart more emotion to it.

That would be great, I'd love to see an emotion-changing gimmick in a future Beastbox. That said, I kinda dig Dio's perpetually angry eyes. Since he's the literal runt of the litter when it comes to BBs, it's fitting that he would be this grouchy little troublemaker, always getting into mischief.

Like look at this pic, his eyes make him look like he's grudgingly taking the food, still not quite willing to trust humans.

The rhino's eyes are kinda like this, they can emote a little, but they're geared to the horn so folding it out properly locks them to one expression. I've given some thought to opening the head up and seeing if I can disconnect them, but it looks like it'd take cracking some glue.

There’s a video review that’s been floating around for a week or so and he honestly looks like a big step up from Moma/Rhyden/Behemoth/etc. in terms of articulation. The segments of his body and the base of his limbs are on (limited) ball joints, and the way his transformation works has his upper and lower jaws on separate double hinges. It looks silly, but he can theoretically unhinge his jaw and chomp down on things as big as his head. He also comes with two of those fish guns.

There was actually some conflict between Matrix Monster and Beast Box. Both came out around 2015, also Fiery Dragon and DIO looked similar in some parts, leading to a lot of gossip on who copied who.

So here's 52toys' statement from back then.

The gist of it is that 52toys made a draft of DIO and outsourced the rest of the work to a design studio. Matrix Monster's designer was part of this studio. He helped with the DIO design while he was making his own Matrix Monster business on the side. So you could say Fiery Dragon and DIO shared some blood. 52toys didn't find enough evidence of design theft so they decided not to pursue the case.

I think the bigger size is precisely the factor that contributes the most to the floppiness. Bigger figure = heavier parts = more weight for the joints to support = more likely to loosen up = floppier overall construction. 52T probably found the right sweetspot of size for these designs.

Aren't Rhyden and Behemoth the same mold with new heads? And it looks like Teardrop and that upcoming shark share a lot of parts. Hell, there already is a tweaked version of the bird mold; Echoblaster and Sonicripple use the vanilla version of the mold while Rumblebeat and Space Anthem have a jointed crest on their heads.

I dunno about the changes being that expensive, because on both ghost dog and Anthem/rumblebeat the differences were extremely minor. It wasn't even the whole head or anything, just a part of the head. It would effectively be 95% identical. I think they could get away with it.

The only one of those I own is Moma. Sure, he's a little brickier than some of the others due to his size and shape, but you can still have him rearing up or get some poseability/expressiveness out of his trunk. I mostly use him as a mount for smaller figures, so it doesn't bother me much that he isn't super poseable.

Yeah, those are definitely the clunkier molds. The mammoth is the only one out of them I don't really like though, they've all got enough to emote pretty well. Hippo/rhino is probably the worst just on paper though, the front legs have a lot of outwards but barely any forwards/back.

Mammoth and Triceratops are surprisingly articulated since that and the transformation was their focus back then. Hippo, Rhino and most of the newer molds seem to focus more on accessory and/or gimmicks.

Teardrop is a mixed bag. On one hand, his articulation is a hell of a lot better than I was expecting. His shoulders and hips use a figma-style ball-joint-and-hinge dealio, the elbows/knees are double-jointed, there are a bunch of cut joints in the limbs, and the body/tail segments are ball-jointed. On the other hand, his quality control is a bit of a mess. There's a lot of nub marks I had to clean up, one armor plate was glued in at a weird angle so I had to remove and re-glue it, and one of the tabs that hold his limbs in place when in box form was so warped that I had to straight-up cut it off. I'm really hoping they get their shit together for the Alien Queen.

Also got Erosis, and it seems like repaints being looser at the joints is a consistent thing nowadays. The back three legs are suuuuper floppy, and the abdomen likes to pop off it's peg. Nice otherwise, though.

When someone here gets Kanibal in-hand, I'm really curious if there's a good looking way to transform it without partsforming the clear blue claw weapons. I've avoided a couple releases in the past due to partsforming, which I personally dislike, but I think I still want crab boi.

Alternatively, it would be nice to see the cube mode with those two blue weapons detached (and worst case scenario I can just flip the whole cube forward 90 degrees so that side faces the ground).

I cannot think of a single transformer that will transform from vehicle to robot with the weapon still held in its hand or whatever. Its integrated in both modes, its just in one mode they're pegged in facing inwards, and in the other they're facing outwards.

As per your idea there...I don't know if that would be possible. If you look the one being carried is still right side up. So while you can probably have them be in a non-cube form and being carried, it will depend on how the attachment works for your idea.

I can't find any good images of the rear of the figure so its hard to say exactly how they peg together. Maybe the TFW thread has more...

Is actually a test shoot or prototype not a true variant. Its a much older picture, unpainted, and you can see the Kanibal on the back actually has the wrong colored legs.

Like how they originally showed off the bird with a gray body and red head.

Hey man, I don't know jack, but what I'm saying is that the level of articulation in these things varies greatly between figures. I don't think anyone was expecting a rhino or hippo to be hyper articulated, but even some really simple things are lacking. Take for instance the tails of the alien and alien queen. The alien's tail is locked in place, nothing but hinge joints, while the queen has a balljoint at the base. it GREATLY increases posing options and is a simple change.

This kind of thinking is crazy, it's like you're going to blame them every time they improve cause "why didn't you think of that sooner!" Now, it would be a different story if Big Chap had the balljoint and they took it out on the Queen. That might be something to complain about.

Beastbox engineering can't be an easy job. Sometimes it's probably gonna fall short, but hey, that's kind of the game here. They're effectively giving themselves a problem (the box shape) and seeing how many different ways they can solve the equation. That's very unlike a standard action figure line where you can add any articulation you want, or even something like Transformers, where the altmode is different per figure and designers often take real liberties on accuracy to make the bot mode work. This ain't that. It's just a box, every time, of a set size and proportion. Shit's a different kind of challenge.

My original criticism of Teardrop was because they created a figure based on an animal known for more sideways movement than vertical movement and yet that figure cannot move sideways. Hell, they even show you it curling to the side on the box and in promotional art, but the actual figure can't do that. It seems to me that if the figure cannot do one of the major things that you'd expect it to (And that it is advertised to do) then maybe you should think about changing the design.

And why would you then take that flawed design and make a shark out of it? Another creature known for moving side to side? With no changes? Imagine if they released the bird but it couldn't move its wings, and then they based a bat on that model that also couldn't move its wings. That would be disappointing and odd right? Thats all I'm saying.

I normally dislike partsforming, but I can't see any way they could have integrated those cables neatly into a box mode, so that's fine. Excited to get this now that I know it scales with Hexa Gear.

If you think about it, Stryker actually filled a niche that stood empty for a long time: articulated animals. A lot of us wanted them, but nobody was making em. Stryker is doing just that, but with an extra dose of robot flavor and transforming thrown in.

Also, as I mentioned the last time someone asked this, not only are Beastboxes cute and fun to play with, it's also oddly compelling to see how many different transformations Stryker can wring out of a cube. It's like seeing how many different ways you can solve a math problem.

Was hesitant on the price tag of the OG matrix monster but i completely loved it when i got it. Would 100% buy these if they came out, they work great with the BB line and also add to the "uber box" idea that is kinda hard to due to to the flimsy-ness that can happen with larger figures

From what i heard Fiery Dragon was created around the same time as Dio and one just took the liberty of copying the face style of the other (forget which). Not actually beastbox sized, about 3 inches each side cubed opposed to beastbox being 1.5-2 inches each so they're pretty massive. Doesn't seem like Stryker cares much to pursue action against them, could simply be a "keep it to the bigger sizes and we'll keep it at that" kind of unspoken thing

This bothers me more than it should. I don't mind partsforming, but the fact that each figure can be stored perfectly in its own little case is one of the big charm points of the line for me. The facehugger/egg that come with the Alien and Iceqube's crown come to mind. Surely they could've found a way to slot the detached cables into one of the many little grooves and spaces created by the transformation.

Think about it logically. Getting those loose cables to sit nicely inside the box with the loader would have been frustrating enough to bring you to tears. If Striker had done that I could see a lot of people complaining.

I don't think it would be anywhere as hard as you think. We already see that one end of the cables is already all joined together. All you'd need to do is have a little clip to hold it in a folded up position and then slot the folded up cords into those two spaces we see facing forwards when its in box form.

I'm with the first guy. Parts forming is meh but understandable but having basic parts have to sit outside the box is not only failing to keep with the design of the rest of the figures, but also annoying because it ruins the nice clean storage system. Its enough to make me not buy the thing.

DIO was supposed to be their mascot character with their logo's colors, but it blew up from there.

That's why if you look at Stryker Wang's twitter profile, it does say he's the producer, meaning he finds the design studios for the BBs and coordinates them, much like a movie producer.

Jojobs is a variant, his extra stuff is all optional. And the perch doesn't fit in the box, but it does neatly attach to it. These pipes are part of the base design and don't store away or attach anywhere.

If that's true, it's kind of remarkable how well they all work together aesthetically, and how consistently high-quality and clever the output has been. I haven't seen teamwork this good in ages, especially when it's a completely disconnected group of individuals all trying to adhere to a single standard.

It likely depends on demand and popularity, plus just time. The early molds had a ton of variants simply because it was cheaper to release a bunch of recolors than try to produce a whole ton of new molds quickly. Now that their company is bigger and they're cranking out releases faster, they have no real need to make 10 new recolors.

I'm sure if a mold is super popular it will get a recolor, but the hippo and rhino aren't exactly flying off the shelves
