I thought it was going to be much more complicated, but it seems like it's really just getting everything together that's a bother, but maybe the pricing just adds up. I haven't looked at the cost of the materials yet, but that would probably explain why you see people cut up something they already own rather than buying the parts, at least, that's what I think is going on.
It feels like a combination of recasting and 3d printing would actually be pretty powerful combination to make customs/replicas of toys too, but I'm not sure how good 3d picture scan things are
